The HTC Thunderbolt is a mess of a phone, but a cool one to look at a decade later. Gotta love the old HTC Sense UI and quirkiness, definitely came from a different era. Make sure you stop by the Discord if you enjoy talking some tech! I'm there occasionally, but always watching 👀 discord.io/91tech

I loved my Thunderbolt in 2020. Since it no longer activates on CDMA, battery life is much better and I got a full day out of it. It did all I needed it to as well, playing music, phone and texts, browsing, and weather apps. I personally adored the UI and wish phones went back to it. I keep it as a backup, since it can't run some apps I use today like the Kroger and Walmart apps, as well as certain music streaming apps. While Verizon no longer activates it, you can cheat with a Straight Talk SIM kit. The Verizon SIM in the kit doesn't ask for the IMEI.

My first smartphone…. Oh the memories of this thing… waiting for the Ice Cream Sandwich update, rooting it and flashing various broken builds of ICS on this thing… good times. I had a replacement, bigger battery that came with a new backplate, it gave the thing a huge hump and made it even heavier but hey, it made it last most of the time I needed it haha.

The ICS hype was such a big thing. I preordered the Galaxy Nexus and got upset when it took another 6-8 weeks to get to me due to unexpectedly high demand. I used that thing with custom ROMs for soo long, until they started getting further and further behind the main releases with fewer people putting the time in. I still miss that phone tbh. Those blue Holo glows in ICS looked great on OLED.

Well most companies now sacrifice everything for aesthetics. Apple more so than any other company. The hinges and added slits go against the sleek one piece cover. If a company could get away with selling you a phone with small battery that only gives you 1 minute and you had to carry a car battery in a backpack just so they could have the slimmest phone fit right in your wallet they would.

The charging port placement was designed so that that phone could be slipped into a dock that held the phone horizontally for hands-free in-car use. In the car, it worked great. I think there was a desktop dock planned, too, but I don't remember that it ever materialized. I still have two of the phones, and I may have one of the car docks around somewhere.

Gosh I miss the early days of old Android devices. One of my favorites was the HTC Droid Incredible, I still remember being excited that it was one of the first devices in North America, if not the first, to get the 2.2 update OTA. After that I only bought Nexus for a while with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and then LG Nexus 5, which I still feel like was the best smartphone of it's era.

I really don't understand this whole "battery life" issue. I owned a Thunderbolt and never once experienced poor battery life. I charged it once overnight like every other phone I've ever owned. I used it quite heavily back in the day as well. It was a fantastic phone for it's time. In fact, I still have it in my phone drawer.

I remember reviews at the time saying using LTE ate up the battery but without it it was basically fine and akin to the Desire (whose silicon it shared); if slightly short. So I wonder how much you used the LTE. But then I was always fine plugging in at 5-10% remaining while reviewers would seemingly complain if it was below 20 or 30% by the time they charged, so I can understand where you’re coming from WRT not always agreeing with reviews’ battery life assessments.

I would say 2013-2015 was my favorite era of Android. So much fun experimentation and fun visuals. I had the Desire Z, which was fine, but that had a slightly newer chip (smaller fab process, the 800MHz in that one benched the same as the 1GHz in Desire, etc) so I would imagine it got probably at least an hour or two more than the OG Desire. But then I also rooted mine and installed CyanogenMod Android 2.3 without even bothering to try using the HTC Sense Android 2.2 install it came with. And I remember reviewers complaining about Sense’s battery drain at the time - so maybe that’s where I got most of the battery life being fine and it was not really from the hardware?

The HTC Thunderbolt is the phone that made me leave the Android platform for good as soon as the iPhone was finally available with other carriers such as Verizon. I got a 4s and never looked back. At the time I really wanted Sprint's version of the first 4G HTC phone for the red acccents but I settled for the Verizon counterpart..... That Thunderbolt had awful battery life as you mentioned and used to crash all the time. It's still cool looking at your video though and remembering what originally drew me to the Thunderbolt. Even though the screen was smaller, I liked how premium the iPhone 4s looked and felt both in hardware and software compared to the Thunderbolt.

And devices back then the charge ports would always break and fall out back then. This fixed that.

I remember rooting and custom ROMing my brother's Evo 4G to make it run better and he was pissed that its UI was different lmao. I ended up reflashing it to a stock HTC Sense ROM, all was well, but that was interesting... lol. I also had Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S variation called the Epic 4G, and that ran on 4G WiMax. It was the only OG Galaxy S to have a physical keyboard, so that was fun. Thanks for this video.. It was interesting taking a trip to the past.

Dude I had a thunderbolt and it was the coolest phone ever. I always had a charger nearby. I was younger than and I would charge it in my parents's car or at home. If I went to school it lasted a decent amount of time on idle if I turned off 4G. It took decent enough pictures and it had awesome network capabilities but the battery was indeed the Achilles heel of that mobile computer... During those times full computers on the go was still freaking amazing to me but I had just kind of accepted the fact that if you wanted to do all of this on a battery it would last this long. It made sense it was a very advanced phone so the battery drained fast, and I'm glad the market has changed today.

Size and specs wise, the HTC Thunderbolt was extremely comparable to the HTC Evo 4G, which was extremely comparable to the HTC HD2 running Windows Mobile 6.5 and hacked to run everything else. The Thunderbolt was absolutely chonky compared to the Evo 4G, which had extremely similar specs just different radios. Smartphones almost never came with kickstands, that was a huge flex because 4.3inches was considered huge and 5inches and above was considered impractical "phablet" territory (check out some reviews of the Dell Streak and Samsung Note 1 if that sounds rediculous). I type this out a decade later on a phone with a 5.4 inch screen that has "mini" in the name.

i had this phone and i absolutely loved it, but i did have complaints - battery life sucked and you couldn't plug in the phone when you used the kickstand, and the wait for ICS felt like an eternity when everyone else had it and i was waiting.. ended up rooting

I've had the Virgin Mobile Evo 3D, loved that phone for being big upgrade from the Optimus V. I was young and thinking upgrading to 4G was awesome, few days later I've turned off the 4G since it was spotty AF and was happy with 3G. Good times.

2:22 this was my first smart phone. I actually could not go with a phone with a screen smaller than 4in, and hilariously, that was the first smart phone with a 4in screen. It was a beast back in the day. I used to overclock it haha.

Loved my Thunderbolt cuz it still had the best speakers (under the kickstand which was genius) on a smartphone I've ever owned.

I had this phone when it came out everything you said is true. Verizon offered a bigger battery for it.I've also noticed in the video you insert a 64 gig chip in the phone . I don't think the phone could read anything past 32 gig, As the 64 gig is a new technology it didn't exist when the thunderbolt came out. It came out a few months later, but but the technology changed and the chip would have been extremely expensive it would have been extremely expensive if the phone was able to read it. It may explain why you could not store your pictures on the chip. Since I no longer have my thunder bolt and did not possess a and did not possess a 64 gig chip at the time when I did, when I did, I can't prove that theory.

No, he could read the SD card, the complaint was about not being able to store photos on the internal memory and having to go get an SD card at all. 32GB is the maximum size for SDHC yes, but a lot of devices from this time period had SDXC already. And a device that supports SDXC reads all SDXC cards even if they have higher capacities than were available when they came out. I have a 2011-model laptop with SDXC and it reads 512GB SD cards just fine. Just like something with SDHC can read 32GB cards even if the max was 8 or 16 when it was new. Even though the voiceover said he used the SD card fine, I just quickly checked, and yep, the Thunderbolt had SDXC. Most things from that time period did but I figured I’d be 300% sure before I make this “well actually” comment. In fact the Galaxy S, as well as some of its predecessors, and all the Motorola DROIDs except for the very first one, and many more, all had SDXC already, specifically so they could future-proof their SD slots.

I had a distant cousin, the HTC Inspire 4G, in 2011. I actually really liked that phone except for all the AT&T bloat. I eventually sold it for a Windows Phone of all things.

My first cell phone was a flip phone and at that time text messages was 10cents a message, they charged a lot if you using data and you only had certain amount of minutes depending on the plan. This was around 2003
