Happy Birthday, PS1! I remember getting a PlayStation for Christmas in 1997 with Final Fantasy VII and Tomb Raider 2...it's a day I can recall so clearly. Even though my grandmother had graciously gifted me a Nintendo 64 earlier that year and I had the chance to play games like Star Fox 64, Doom 64, Super Mario 64 (anything ending with 64, really), I was still so blown away by the PS1, it had a completely new and different feel from any video game system I had ever played before. That winter break, I spent nearly every waking moment parked in front of the small TV in my room and managed to beat Final Fantasy VII before school started back up...I may have had some help with the Versus FFVII strategy guide that I bought months earlier.

Thank you for actually showing the original games and first games ever released for playstation because I have seen many talk about the first games but released on other regions and not the actual first. So I appreciate that you showed these games. I see Mahjong is so popular for Videogames it does not matter the year.

Outside of Ridge racer, it had such a humble launch all things considered. It is one of those things that in 94 Sony was a new player who made TV's, VCR's, cameras etc. It could have so easily gone that same way as the CDi, FM Towns Martyand, 3DO - but they managed to out play everyone.

Bro, I love Parodius. Played the hell out of the SNES version, and the PS1 version doesn't look too different, solid start to a system. also damn those models from the Mahjong game are incredible.

I'm a huge Parodius fan, too--well, not that huge, as I haven't been working out much lately, but I love the series. The Super Famicom version of Gokujou Parodius is probably my favorite...not only does it have Kid Dracula as a playable character, but the one and only Goemon as well...and you probably know how I feel about him.

Man, Ill never forget opening our PS on christmas day that year. My siblings and I went nuts! We spent the day and night playing ridge racer as a family. My dad loved playing ridge racer!

25% of the launch lineup being mahjong titles is one of those things that feels like a universal constant of Japanese console launches, and I say this with the utmost respect for both the game and the people who keep buying digital mahjong for every new game console.

It's such a uniquely Japanese thing! It always baffled me as a kid...so much mahjong, shogi and pachinko/pachislot titles, and apparently they sell well enough.

I remember playing Jumping Flash! and Twisted Metal at a rich kid's sleepover, but I didn't really want a PS1 until FF7. I bought a memory card, rented the console and was so happy that I didn't have to worry about losing my save for when I eventually bought the console.

Right? And besides the Tekkens, Ace Combats and Tohshindens, a lot of the almost launch and early PS1 titles were also games that would never see release--or be popular--outside of Japan, too.

@@importgamingftw They knew the audiences were totally different. Anime or RPGs hadn't really taken hold at that time so there was a stronger focus on action.

@@goatbone Oh, for sure--I think the popularity of the PS1 was a major factor in anime becoming so popular in the West due to the games that would eventually get released for it...and that's largely due to Final Fantasy VII and it (mega) popularizing RPGs in the West.

I agree--love the Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube, even the PS2, but there's something about the two part PS1 intro's visuals and sound that just elevate it to the top.

A very funfact here, i think it is worth mentioning this here that not related on the video PopoloCrois monogatari itself was planned before the playstation launch and was first designed only for japanese market, around '91~92 the project was began planned as SNES-CD still in proposal title between sony-nintendo but had to move development to PS1 in 1993 it's lasted longer. Tetsuji yamamoto who heavily involved the franchise said he had popularity poll among their internal playtesters and PopoloCrois Monogatari was the most top popular in sony back then.

Appreciate the fun fact--didn't know that, and I swear one of these days I'll mention the Popolocrois series in a video or try to do one of the games justice somehow. I remember as a kid reading up about the games so much in magazines and being disappointed it didn't come to the west until the PSP (I think that was the first one that was localized).

That's the reason I bought it...but many months before that, the games I wanted a PS1 for were Bubsy 3D and Space Jam. I wish I was making that up.

I do hope we see the unreleased arcade version of Nekketsu Oyako surfacing one day, since it was one of the many Technosoft arcades games they did during that brief development period. Very good video BTW!

Right around the time the PS1 launched in the US, Toys R Us had some random promo where they'd give you a $50 gift card for 5 used games, and my mom took me to Funcoland where we went through their paper with their workers, buying loads of games for dirt cheap, took them to Toys R Us and got like $400 in gift cards for like $55. My mom being awesome enough to do that for me was how I got a PS1. (I think we might've actually made a couple trips or been a pretty long ordeal, because I remember us showing the Funcoland workers the flyer, them helping us while spending a lot of time there, and them getting excited saying they were gonna do the same thing once they got off of work lol... The strange thing is I don't even know why Toys R Us wanted used games, because I don't remember ever seeing them actually sell them)

That's a fantastic story--it's amazing how much you could "game" these stores and companies back then. Yeah, I never saw anything used at Toys R' Us, but I do have fond memories of their amazing video game bargain bins.

@@importgamingftw Thanks, I got most of my consoles in pretty unconventional ways, but this one was pretty memorable for me. I don't remember if my Toys R Us had bins, but I could spend all day looking at those videogame flaps on the wall lol. It's a shame the higher ups did such a poor job trying to adapt to the online shopping age and things came to such a pitiful ending. Toys R Us was awesome.

Rewatching the PS promo VHS footage and the プレプレ tech demos really makes you remember just how revolutionary the jump to the CD-based consoles felt back in the day.

Probably from late '98 or early '99 up until 2001/2, if you asked me what my favorite console was, I would have said the Saturn, most likely. I still love it, but as an adult I came to appreciate the PS1 much more.

I never had a PlayStation until I bought a used PS3 about six years ago, and then waited for a PS5 to catch up with PS4 titles. I am old and have ADHD, so went thru an early video game frenzy with Atari 2600, 800, and ST as well as arcade games. Then when I went to college it was starting to become clear to me tha my ADHD was not allowing gaming to be a healthy part of my life while trying to buikd myself into an adult. So I stopped gaming for years until Duke Nukem 3D in a computer shop pulled me back in for awhile. Still avoided consoles due to my problem with time management. At some point, I heard about the Dreamcast getting drastically price cut and was lured in and bought a ton of stuff on clearance discount at local stores. Eventually, the N64, 3DS, PlayStation TV, and Switch were added. Unfortunately, with me, giving into my gaming dreams always coincides with giving up on all hope for the rest of my life. Just spent over 200 hours on Yakuza Infinite Wealth, while my actual life falls apart.

I'm sorry to hear about your struggles--while it's not as severe, I too have a problem with getting sucked into certain games. I never played Elder Scrolls V or Final Fantasy XI because I knew that I would spend way too much time obsessing over them. I have tried to avoid From Software games since Dark Souls II...I had Elden Ring for a while and never ended it up playing it, so I decided to sell it earlier this year during my summer vacation...popped it in my PS5 to test if it worked, started playing the beginning...and then hundreds of hours later, I had beaten it, the DLC and gotten a Platinum trophy. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

I got a Japanese PlayStation some months after release so my 'launch' games were Ridge Racer, Gunners Heaven, Motor Toon Grand Prix, Tekken ans Toshinden.

Very nice selection. When I modded my PS1, one of the first PS1 games I bought was Gunners Heaven, not knowing anything about it before seeing it at the store in the Japanese game bargain bin.

Well that was fun. I knew the PSX n Japan had more weird titles, and more 2D titles at launch, but this was still an eye opener. Frankly I'm kinda surprised by how many titles were shared with the Saturn. Even though that occasionally got noted here for titles like Resident Evil or Tomb Raider, it still felt rare (and Lord knows, to the general public, titles like those were quickly associated with the Playstation anyway with the Saturn versions becoming largely irrelevant on the market quickly). I never knew Hot-Blooded Family was also on Saturn especially. Also surprised Tama didn't launch the N64 in Japan if it showed up for both PSX and Saturn... I'm not sure there's are ANY puzzle titles like that on the 64. It's also weird to not to see early Japanese Playstation staples like Jumping Flash, Motor Toon Gran Prix and Battle Arena Toshinden here yet. Fascinating stuff; such humble beginnings! I would be interested in seeing what the launch lineup for more consoles were like in Japan. The 3DO in particular... heck, I don't know what the launch lineup looked like for that HERE in the 'States, come to think of it. But it ended up having such a weird life in Japan, embraced by so many wacky little experimental devs, that I'm sure it too would be interesting to look at someday.

For what it's worth, the US 3DO launch is really easy to remember 😅 Crash 'n Burn. That's it. For something like 6-7 months if I recall, that was all we had.

Good to hear you got something new from the video--yeah, I always think of those three games you mentioned as part of the early popular PS1 games, but the launch lineup was what it was. I guess only Ridge Racer had the kind of huge cultural impact later games on the PS1 would have.

This was the one for me, the ps1 not so much the ps2. The ps1 had so many unique and experimental titles compared to the games after it on the ps2 that also had many ports on other systems and the pc. With the ps1, there was a lot of new ground covered.

Yeah, PS1 is still my favorite--I had a line or two in this video that I ended up cutting out about the innovative and budget titles on the system being a big part of its legacy, and the PS1 leading a new "wild west" type era in experimental game development.

My first playstation game was not a launch title. It was resident evil 1 and final fantasy tactics. But man is that systems games great. The experimentation was frequent and many great series began its life there. I miss those times. I am glad the current indie scene is mimicking it to an extent.

@@HeronNobody It's something I can laugh at now, but Resident Evil legitimately scared me back then. I didn't realize how corny the voice acting was, either...well, maybe I did, but just a little (c'mon, Jill Sandwich? Sounds delicious, though). Final Fantasy Tactics was my first strategy RPG, and the depth to the story and game system, as well as its fantastic art and music, made an impression on me that I'll never forget. The first game soundtrack I ever bought was FFT and I used to listen to it every night before bed. Sadly, I didn't realize it at the time, but I bought a bootleg Sonmay records version! Damn you, Toys N' Joys (where I bought the CD).

Happy Birthday to Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Sony PlayStation December 3rd 1994 Japanese launch... I feel years later we tend to take for granted how Sony revolutionized videogames and videogame systems especially in the West where they finally officially supported the older gamers who were growing tired of the constant censorship and half effort power being made by Sega where back then Sega of America was the most toxic subsidiary branch on the planet and where Nintendo were trying to shake off their kids image which they did even though they don't get the credit more often. Thank you for making this video... however this should be focused only on the launch and first year image of the Sony PlayStation... later stuff like Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider happened by late 1996 and 1997 which is basically the third and fourth waves of game software.

It cannot be overstated how important the PS1 was back in the mid/late 90s in shaping the direction video games would take in the next couple of generations. Such an amazing time, I'm pretty certain a similar catalyst for change in the industry/culture will never take place again in gaming. Regarding your last part, maybe you're mixing up my pinned comment with the video, but I only focus on the launch titles and don't even mention Tomb Raider in the video.

I actually learned Chinese mahjong 20 years ago or so, and played Japanese mahjong once or twice when I was a student, but I have zero memory of the rules and am not only too lazy to learn it again, but afraid, since I may end up becoming a degenerate gambler.

Yeah, I recorded my own footage--it's on a PSOne console using official Sony RGB cables upscaled through a RetroTINK-5x.

I like the first PlayStation, especially the link up possibilities. Destruction Derby is my favourite PlayStation game. But I prefer the Sega Saturn by far.
