16:14 “… think of a V4 Panigale, I mean who can ride that?” Man that made me laugh out loud. Kevin and Mark made such a good point there. I bought a ‘21 Panigale V4S for after I left my job at the end of 2021. I don’t even stratch the surface of its huge potential and I can’t even hope to. However it’s still worth it as it looks gorgeous and makes me feel good. At the end that’s all that matters…

Worked at at bmw motorcycle dealership from ‘98 to ‘13 under several ownership changes. The first was a dealer from the 70’s and a true GS guy. Learned a lot and heard great stories from the intros and dealer meetings in Germany. Never got the GS urge, just saw the bike grow in mass and popularity . The R80GS was a light fun bike manageable by all. I barely recognize them now as they are the size of a small car. (I was and am an RT snob)

In 2012 when I was 60 years old, I sold my Harleys and bought a 2011 R1200 GSA. I rode it from my then-home in Pismo Beach, CA to Prudoe Bay, AK. Then, because I wasn't ready to go back home just yet I went down to New Mexico. 9000 miles later I finally made it back home. That was a wonderful bike, fast and very predictable when hard cornering on pavement and not bad at all on wet and muddy dirt roads that felt like riding on oatmeal. Great trip and great memories that I will carry with me until I pass away.

Great to hear in depth conversation about a motorcycling topic. The only problem I have with big bikes like the GS, is just how big they are. I think it didnt hurt that Germans are in general fairly tall compared to averages, for example, a BMW GS made in South America might not have caught on.

@@tonyjourneyman1944 It's not an isolated trend in model redesigns/updates. Look at the auto industry, all of the upsizing of models constantly. Many reasons affect this, but it still happens.

I know you don't do requests but it would be awesome if you at some point did a Wednesday with Kevin Cameron discussing Yamaha's wins in the Paris-Dakar race in the 1980s. The Paris-Dakar was HUGE.

i'm a little behind on these! Especially loved this one as I just picked up a '17 1200GS and listened to this episode as I drove home from FL w/new bike! I raced my '95 1100GS w/AHRMA in '96 & '97 - Rd AM, Grattan, Mid-O! Even got lapped by Eric Wood on a Britten...the stories my '95 could tell!

Awesome job with this episode. Your collective knowledge on motorcycles is amazing. I was hoping you guys would consider talking about the argument for which is the real first Superbike. Some say it's the cb750 way back in the day. Others say it's the Kawasaki GPZ900 or the GSXR750. How much does being liquid cooled and fully faired weight into what is considered a "superbike". Thanks guys for the content.

GSX-R750 was arguably the first. It carried the formula that has persisted ever since. Engine as stressed member, aerodynamic full fairings, clip-on bars, high performance inline-4, weigh biased on front wheel, design optimized for race track environment. It started life as something bigger than a 600cc, which got reflected in increasing displacement later. Suzuki stuffed a 988cc into the 750 chassis. Then there was the YZF-R1. Honda's 929 and 954 eventually became the 1L. Kawasaki ZX-9R later became a ZX-10R.

Fantastic Talk. My friend John Richards of Ventura, CA introduced me to GS's at his airplane hangar in Santa Paula. He had an 80, recylindered to 1000cc. He rode from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego..most of it with his wife om the back. One evening he had me swing by his house to meet Ted Simon, of Jupiters Travels fame, who was staying with him in Ventura. The most amazing meal with two guys who had ridden the world before it was popular, or there was support from country to country.

I'll bet BMW engineers looked to the German Wehrmacht use of motorcycles during WW2 when conceiving the GS. The Germans used motorcycles in the field during that conflict like trail, dirt and mud bikes. Lots of sidecars too. No other country used motorcycles to that extent. Remember, the GS was the same era as the VW "Thing" inspired by the Wehrmacht Kubelwagen. Of course neither company could appeal to their WW2 experience for advertising purposes due to the stigma involved. But I'll bet that was the thinking behind the GS. Surprised it wasn't mentioned.

I own a 2022 R1250 GS and a 2016 R1200 before that. 75K miles between them, and I love the drivetrain. The tech on the new bike falls short, however. The electronic suspension (ESA) is rubbish. The interface with the TFT is terrible. Keyless Ride has failed more than once. Hill hold control is unusable unless you like stalling. I wish BMW would make a stripped-downed, "keep it simple" kind of GS with the awesome drivetrain and a high-quality, fully adjustable suspension.

The first R80G/S I saw was in an automobile showroom. I imagine this was part of its success. The feedback from a global use provided feedback from diverse regions of the globe. I'm surprised there isn't more predictive scénarios for maintenance now, although I believe BMW dabbled with it on their 'K' bikes.

I rode a buddy's K1200 autobahn bagger (telelever front end) up the autostrada from Pesaro, north of Bologna, then over the Appenines to La Spezia. when I picked it up, I thought it had two flat tires. turns out they were only low by 2 psi. dang. it fell over on some roundabout turns and stood up in others. most evil handling bike I ever rode. the tires were not even 1/2 worn.

Does any manufacturer use either Directo or even VVT? I think I saw an OHC motorcycle engine with Advance weights/springs in the upper cam gear. Even a simple advance/retard makes a difference. How does the Husquavarna 701 super moto make 71 ft flbs of torque, when my XSR900 makes only 68? Does the 701 use a cam advance mechanism to do it? Why would a single make more torque than a twin of same displacement? One big boom every other revolution vs. two smaller booms every other revolution.

Direct Injection..
@vvevvevvvv
@vvevvevvvv 3 ай бұрын
@@markhall3434 direct injection will be used soon on a motorcycle. Honda had already patented one. Peak torque doesn't really depend on the number of cylinders, but rather on compression ratio, engine head design, fuel. Btw, you've got the specs wrong. On the same Cycleworld dyno 2022 XSR900 produced 106.0 hp at 9,970 rpm and 63.5 lb.-ft. of torque at 7,030 rpm. The 701 produced a peak 60.31 hp at 8,510 rpm and 44.03 pound-feet of torque at 6,740 rpm.
