I love how you compare sizes of the hardware. For many of us, that's not really something that's a major consideration, but for those who travel a lot, I imagine that's very handy information to have. This always seems to be the way for Powkiddy. Get out there first but skimp on the overall build quality and hope consumers don't experience too many issues. And the lite, don't even start with the lite, lite is a mess, 2 weeks ago they were going to have "the first prototype" using the engineering board, a week came by, they moved that to this week, this week they said that they expected to be able to upload a video of a fully assembled lite. On today's update, that has scaled back to, they hope to be able to have the screen working on the eng PCB "soon". I own the XD Plus with a silicone grip cover designed for the 3DS. It makes that device easier to hold. I think the XD Plus was worth it as it was the most powerful one of these devices for about 3 years until the X18S came along. It's biggest fault was the poorly designed right hinge which eventually cracks as the metal screw inside is too tight and applies too much force on the plastic with normal opening/closing. I wonder if this X18S device has a better designed hinge. I could see someone fix the D-Pad and buttons and maybe triggers on this thing and re-sell it. There is a moderator on the XD Plus subreddit that sells the XD Plus with mods that fix all of these issues for reasonable prices. I would be interested to see if he does something like that with this thing.

marvelous, Russ, just what i was looking for! i really wanna get this puppy but the controlls... Prime also wasn't a big fan of those and i cannot get one thing that u said out of my head - what good is the screen n all if u just don't want to play it coz of bad controlls and subpar experience u get while using them? i really wanna wait a little, hoping powkiddy can address these concerns and maybe release an updated batch of these bad boys, with improved controlls and buttons in general. again, thanx for your hard work.

Where can I find roms that I can put on the system? I’m having trouble finding ones for my system

My kingdom for a retro handheld device that can play most of the post-32 bit catalog smoothly whilst also having decent buttons. Right now the choice is limited to having one or the other.

i'll be happy when more next generation, sub-200, bar-style handhelds come out. i like this on paper, but i don't really love this design. the screen size/ratio might be perfect as a compromise between wide and tall.

I really hope PowKiddy takes another whack at this design soon. Maybe just slightly smaller with better controls including stacked triggers I think would be very well recieved right now

How do the controls on this compare to the original X18? I've heard a lot of criticism about the old X18, but I've liked mine a lot.

Hey Russ, you tried the new Android version of Launchbox on it, if so how is it with that, would be a better frontend for me to use.

I have one and enjoy it tbh Plays DS , PSP and some gb well . None of the handhelds released so far reached that power ( Odin and Deck excluded ) .

Downloading that 13GB for Genshin would've been a letdown, as it (still) doesn't natively support gamepad controls with android, so the experience would be similar to your PS4 streaming experience unless you use some screenmapping software.

Screenmapping software is a quick way to get banned in Genshin, as well, as a forewarning.

Neat! Kinda wanna see how it handles DRM content like Prime Video connected to a TV.

I am going to hold off and see what Anbernic puts out. I have a feeling it will be slightly less power, but cheaper and with better controls.

I agree with the power and controls, but judging from what they've been charging lately I would expect $175. I'm hoping to be wrong!

As soon as I get it! It’s been shipped but will probably take a couple weeks to actually get to me.

Solid review as always. Dunno about betting on the other next-generation devices as well the only ones that would be better than this is either super expensive (GPD XP) or might never be released at all (Odin and kt-r1). But two devices that I'm really looking forward to. Is the RP2+ and RP3. The value proposition of the first is just out of this world and I really want the RP3 to fix the hardware issues of the original RP2.

What happened to the grip-cap on your joycon?

the thing is, Powkiddy isn't some small company dipping their toes into the market for the first time. they are one of the biggest players, and they already made this exact type of handheld with the X18. by this point, they should know how to do it right, so these kinds of issues are inexcusable.

I think if the build and buttons were better this would be a no brainer to me. I've been wanting a clamshell device forever. (currently use new 3ds xl and ps vita 2000 both hacked)
