Having owned one for a few months, I'd say the battery life is perfect at 6 hours. The fact that Dreamcast and PS2 doesn't work well on this device isn't a biggie as we're getting a little small on screen real estate to make best use anyway, and a faster CPU would affect that great battery life. I actually spend most of my time on the 351MP playing Neo-Geo and MAME games. One final point; the 351MP won't be available for long, and it is perhaps the highest overall quality 4:3 device out there. I would expect it to be the one most likely to become a collector's classic in years to come! EDIT: A recent update makes all native Dreamcast games very playable; set Sega Dreamcast > Emulator to RETRORUN32 and core to FLYCAST32_RUMBLE

I know the steam deck is a totally different beast than these small handhelds but boy does all this screwing around with the same chipset make me want the steam handheld even more. I can basically use my existing 351p for going out and the steam deck for longer trips and at home. I don't see myself upgrading my tiny device for another few years when I pair my devices like this. All of this is to say " Maybe you don't need to get too sad about it" lol.

@@Uranusfog YES. This is exactly how I feel. I already have perfect GBA and PS1 emulation in my pocket, and over time more PSP games I care about will be playable. Really the magic bullet for me is a 3.5 or 5" class device with a 854 or 720x480 screen which can emulate 6th gen and Wii. It would be perfect. I would probably only be open to an ambernic though, unless someone matched their build quality.

IIRC my iPhone 6s really excels with N64 emulation and can actually handle Dreamcast and maybe Gamecube. PSP is 100% fine. But I want something with dedicated controls and that specific resolution.

With the 640x480 screen this should be an excellent basis for emulating MS DOS games. While older consoles will use lower resolutions, they do at least share the same screen layout so it should be really good for them as well. Add that it is pushing far fewer pixels than it would with a more modern resolution should let the GPU show better performance than you would otherwise expect from this GPU. However I do see that the SOC is dated and it really needs an upgrade. Unfortunately this is something that has been overdue for a while now, not in just this device, but also in single board computers where the power of the SOC's has not improved for a couple of years now.

This is a very tough sell for me. I have an odroid go super that i just modded with the metal shell and it feels great. But the device is a little big. I also just modded my old rg350 with a 480p screen. I still reallyvlike the buttons and size of the rg350. I might pick this one up. That light blue metal looks great.

Love it but because im a little older, older than the writers of these old games i find the screen size can be an issue. Just think it's time for Anbernic to make a 550 and upgrade there chip set wifi and software suite as they have had time due to COVID-19. I don't get why wifi is needed at all. These games never had achievements when I was playing them. It makes no sense to me to have wifi unless you are messaging someone or watching videos or writing emails or watching KZbin or other services and that's really not what these are made for.

Even if none of those appeal to you, I think it's still hard to deny that when they're all combined it's a decent-enough collection of features that it's reasonable for people to be frustrated at their absence, given the cost of the device and its inclusion in cheaper competing devices.

@@sethsez It's not useful for me or anyone playing these traditional games. Other than multiplayer which the only multiplayer that could be useful at least traditionally is local co op. I am not discounting the excellent advances in technology that allows online multiplayer. What I'm saying is, it's not useful overall regardless of price or inclusion in lower cost items. I'd rather see them put the money into a better chipset instead of features which are not useful. Also the images that need to be there for the games can be added the same time your games are. Yeah it takes work but that's part of emulation and the limits by the companies using these chipsets.

Hi Taki, to add: coming out late made their newer products have to compete against their own RG351MP. It only makes the RG351MP more relevant compared to their 552 and 503 cause they keep making these giant screens that aren't portable and screen ratios that defeat the primary ethos of these devices (retro gaming: requires 4:3)... I would argue their missteps in trying to maximize milking their customer base by only releasing what people actually want towards the end of the cycle (and releasing what people want the least upfront) is what makes the rg351mp the only reasonable current option to look at.

Best dpad (if you can call it that) is on the vita slim. These metal shell devices from Anbernic certainly feel quality, BUT, what gets overlooked is the weight of them. The vita slim also wins on ergonomics and has a bigger display. Really, people are far better off buying an excellent condition vita and installing CFW to play all of your 8 bit and 16 bit emulators, even GBA is nice. Of course you also have a fluid PSP and PS1 experience, and vita games if you like. Don't forget the ports also.

I have a modded Vita; and an RG351V and RG351P; I agree with you on the Vita's awesome, underrated D-pad. However; due to the aspect ratio I prefer playing GBA games on the 351P and 4:3 games on the 351V. And both of these use plastic shells so weight is no issue. In fact I find the 351P much more pocketable than the Vita. I really enjoy the custom borders on my Vita when using Retroarch; I just prefer a dedicated handheld for these types of systems. Many people seem to as well; hence why they exist. Keep rocking the Vita; like I said, I also have one. But it's not for everyone.

@@rodmondh I love mine, it’s my favorite handheld. If you want it for emulating anything up to ps1 it performs great. Just keep in mind it does lack the second analog stick so if that matters (you play ps1 games with the analog stick, or like to play ports of fps games like half life) you might want to get the 351mp in that case. Personally I do miss the option, I have a 351p for those twin stick games like smash tv so that would be my only caution. Otherwise it’s ideal, especially if you love the game boy vertical style. I don’t have the wood grain, I have the smoke but I hear it looks better in person. Enjoy!

Blue handhelds have always looked amazing in my opinion. I enjoy my aqua blue PSVita 2000 and my blue PSP 3000. I personally don't want to mod/emulate on these devices despite them being typically used for that purpose, especially nowadays. I just enjoy collecting physical games and inserting them into the consoles. I also own multiple DS systems, a 2ds and a new 3ds xl. And I also enjoy collecting games for these systems. So why not purchase a RG351 system? It's a dedicated handheld that's practically begging me to emulate the games that are too expensive to collect for. For me, personally the size is way too small. I always purchase a separate hand grip for my handheld systems. Yes, that takes away from the portability aspect of the system. But this is the reason I enjoy the system such as the Nintendo Switch. This wasn't always an issue, as a child, I could play hours on my DSLite without any discomfort. But the older I got, the larger my hands grew and now, grips are about the only way I can enjoy most handhelds without receiving a hand cramp after an hour of playtime. Still, the RG350 series has always peaked my interest, so as mentioned in this video, whenever Abernic decides to upgrade the system internally, is when I may decide to purchase my dedicated emulation device.

Bruh, I've only kept my metal variants because all of the plastic rg351p devices I've bought (3btw) have had serious light bleeding on the sides of the screen. It's so noticable and distracting. I haven't had that issue with my rg280m or rg351m. I guess they're focusing all of their quality on the metal ones now.

I only bought a 351M about a month back, so I'm certainly not about to upgrade to this. I would have preferred this screen option though for sure, even if the external wifi is a minor PITA. To get more money from me now they'd need a bigger better screen again, a more powerful processor and HDMI out. Although it's possible that the release of devices like the steam deck will mean I shift up to a different category altogether.

I think it's the best that can be done right now with $ 150 budget! probably in 1 or 2 years we will see similar consoles, so compact and portable with a more powerful and more modern chipset on board. 351mp is wonderful, for me I was just missing the 4: 3 640x480 screen and a more powerful processor, but I understand that for now you can't have it. Pay a Chinese console 250 euros for much better specs, bigger than a smartphone ,with specs which, despite being better than the rg351mp, don't even come close to the power of smartphones, it makes no sense to me!

Does it come with games pre-installed and if yes which systems? Also you mention that this handheld is slightly underpowered. Which is the most powerful handheld then that you would suggest?

I've got a RG351P and SNES Super-FX games like Starfox, or Yoshi's Island have crackling sounds and perform bad. I tried Batocera, AmberElec... Is it the same with this device ?

I noticed one of the genesis games was running at 50fps. Is that bad performance, or something else (non-ntsc rom or something)?

How confusing to name it MP 🤔. Means it's a RG351 Metal and Plastic 😅 ? I didn't understand why they made this one after RG350 and RG351 with M and P versions 😅.

That blue is only beat but I would take green too
