The first batch of Naval Divers in Singapore tell us what it's like back in the day

Respect. I’m might be wrong, I always heard commando/guards drop out of NDU. NDU is the best combat unit in SG

There's probably truth in that. If I recall , a NSF can be drafted to become a commando or guard and he has to go with the program. However, a NSF drafted to be a diver can choose to decline simply due to the risk factor.

@@kutzewalters5530 nah pretty sure you can opt out of commando but you can never opt out of guards unless you down pes or something

maybe but from what i know, most of the NDU personnel were tasked to do search and rescue missions while the commando were probably the only unit in singapore to have any sort of combat experience, go google SQ117...and i'm not saying one is better than the other, all of them saves lives.

@@lyhthegreat - I'll tell you what i have learned since im serving in NS army. Anyway, the SQ117 mission saved by the Special Forces. Commandos and Special Forces are different. To be able to get into Special Forces, you are considered one of the elites in Singapore Army. NDU's & Commandos are both elites, just that their job scope & their mission is different. To get into Special Forces, they will pick one of the best individual either from Commandos or NDU inorder to get selected for Special Forces

Initially, ndu intakes from taking and they just grabbed whoever stupidity turned up at changi for ndu to pick u up for 'medical' checkup and trial... my next platoon was all out of course previously n were hoping to go cos one.. when they got to ndu, just filled up form to declare your medical etc many just indicated whatever injures and those turned up ones were threatened to take extra if never turn up... bloody hell no one was punished for not turning up... they took in about 80 over and left 30+ passed out.... hence after dont know how many batches then they started intake recruits into ndu and determined if they can or not... I knew 1 with hole in heart and another csnt even do 1 pull up ... and went out of course ...

Of course training have to be tough, since you are tasked with difficult mission, often have to deal with hostile enemy and confront difficult situation, tough going will increase your chance of survival in the aftermath.

If those guy were first batch of diver then how bout their instructor? didn't instructor need to be master first before teaching people?

Great question. I think to be first batch of NDU means they were the first to form it. First batches of instructors usually go overseas to train and come back with the knowledge to train us. If you read the history of NDU, the british were in charge of divers prior to the formation of NDU.

probably some encounters with pirates, but i do know that the commandos(at lest the regulars) stormed a hijacked plane and kill off the 4 hijackers within seconds who threatened to denote the bomb and kill all the passengers on the plane..that's probably the most combat any singaporean military personnel every had..
