This actually happened to Neil Armstrong. You basically went through the same troubleshooting that Armstrong had to. So Kudos! You know this spacecraft really well.
@ReentryAnOrbitalSimulator3 жыл бұрын
That was great, and this really puts pressure on you, happy to see some debugging before disabling the OAMS by triggering the RCS. Your reasoning in the post analysis is correct, the OAMS thrusters got stuck and was causing unpredictable behavior. By enabling RCS, you shut down the OAMS entirely, and can use it to regain control. Not sure why the roll stopped as I usually have to correct that myself but hey, you made it down, in the games hardest mission yet. Apollo will be easy after this :)

Dear N9 Gaming, Neil Armstrong an Dave Scott were presented to the same unexpected rolling in Gemini 8... Neil also undocked Agena, thinking that this might be caused by some Agena's thruster. However, just like you, the rotation worsened after undocking, by which Armstrong deduced it was them that had the self thrusting thruster. Normal orbit thrusters are located in rear Service unit, while Gemini Capsule had a copmplete complement of thrusters to manouver when the rear service unit had ben deleted, just before re-entry. A smaller amount of thrusters, so, propellant reduced significantly, the time they could use these new propellents. So, what Neil did just that to separate the Service Unit (the greatest part of the white rear adapter structure of the spaceship) and discard it, including the ill thruster, and begin to use the small thrusters complement. That cold blooded way of thinking saved their lives, but put an end to the mission, since those thrusters did not have enough propellant to keep on and fuel cells for getting energy, were in the failing and discarded unit, beside the oxygen provision. They had just time to communicate the problem to Earth and to fire retro-rockets in the small white unit still attached to the capsule to de-orbit, and pray to fall outside North-Viet Nam borders. Fortunately batteries and oxygen supply was enough to get out of the "deaf" area and reach another spot of communications relay ship covered zone, so they could contact Houston. That was it, and they could rapidly plan a fast re-entry in the Pacific close to a US Navy ship nearby. Then, when ready, Armstrong fired the retro-rockets to de-orbit, then released the last part of the rear white adapter structure with the retro-rockets and managed to position the re-entry attitude, now exposing the heat shield for re-emtry. That's how Neil Armstrong saved the day for NASA that day!

When you activate rcs it's cuts the line to oams for some reason. But you forgot to set rcs to acme, I think you also powered acme off as well.
@N9GamingOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Ahh makes sense
@ghostdog6883 жыл бұрын
The OAMS line severing is done with a seperate switch, but this is a fail-safe in case of a stuck thruster (which is what this failure is). Pyrotechnic guillotines cut the line by force, preventing the OAMS and RCS from conflicting with one another. Because RCS is a very finite (and seperate) fuel source, NASA policy at the time was that it’s an automatic Mission abort once RCS is enabled, because without OAMS and RCS, the capsule is not able to be controlled, leading to a very good chance of being stuck in orbit or tumbling and burning up during reentry. The events of Gemini 8 are also the reason why the RCS in Apollo is so complex as it has 4 quadruple redundant RCS thruster packs, and also a seperate RCS source for the CM. NASA wasn’t screwing around with that again.
@williamsplays85283 жыл бұрын
@@ghostdog688 I am aware of that. But the line is severed when pressing the rcs as well. It does the same thing, and I just think it was for human-design orientation. In an emergency the two buttons signal different things in the brain, ultimately doing pretty much the same thing with the exception that the rcs button also pressurized the forward fuselage.
