I must say the ancient benin history is one of the most interesting histories in age and time. If we Nigerians and Africans learn of the share wealth of histories of our great Kingdoms and empires , I think we will much appreciate ourselves , our common kinship and our endowments and be much better peoples.

The people of the Kingdom of Benin were educated and civilised before oyinbo stepped foot on their land. We already had an administrative system, lighting system, drainage system and more in place. When they saw our palaces built in bronze, they thought it was the Egyptians that built them. When African's wanted education, they went to Timbuktu. Every country within the African continent had a Kingdom or Empire; Egyptian Empire (3150-30 BCE) Kingdom of Kerma (2500-1500 BCE) Kingdom of Kush (1070 BCE-350 CE) Carthaginian Empire (650-146 BCE) Kingdom of Blemmyes (600 BCE-3rd Ptolemaic Kingdom (306-30 BCE) Kingdom of Mauretania (285 BCE-431 CE and again (533-698 CE) Kingdom of Numidia (202-46 BCE) Kingdom of Makuria (340-1317 CE) Kingdom of Nobatia (350-650 CE) Kingdom of the Vandals and Alans (435-534 CE) Kingdom of Alodia (7th c.-1504 CE) Kingdom of Nekor (710-1019 CE) And so much more.. The mission of the British, was to conquer every Kingdom in Africa and bring them down! Once that was succesfully achieved, they would announce the Kingdom of all Kingdoms, hence the United Kingdom, meaning the United wealth of every fallen African Kingdom!

@@nebotv99 The first "educated" king? First " literate" king ??? Are you serious? The education system from a Western perspective is BRAINWASHING. Western education is COLONIZER miseducation used to indoctrinate people in order to STEAL their RESOURCES and LAND. Shame on you for this title. Africans from the Nile Valley created math, science, astronomy, medicine. IFA religion in Nigeria enconpasses all of these studies. The University of Sankore in Mali was one the oldest universities in history teaching philosophy, mathematics medicine law. This video is shameful indoctrinated thinking😮

I disagree that Oba Orhogbua was the first educated King in Africa, he maybe the first WESTERN EDUCATED AFRICAN KING. Because the facts remain that our African ancestors did not wait more then 3 million years to receive education by European invaders since have historical evidence that Europeans including the Portuguese who are the first White people to arrive in Benin and rest of Africa further south of Sahara get there civilization from the Africans in the first place.

I love this history so much because it shows the power of exposure. Sometimes our people are afraid to expose themselves to western culture. But, when you do so, it actually is a multiplier for the appreciation of your own. This Oba used his exposure to western knowledge to advance and increase the greatness of his people. And, now today we are deeply proud of him. We all need to make sure we know our indigenous culture and history, but also know the culture, techniques and history of others, especially those capable of trying to conquer, insurbodinate and destroy you. Now, we have to go back to building ships and boats in Edo nation. No more buying used or foreign made ships.

My great grandfather Oba Omasan was the 14th Ologho of Ogho who successfully repelled the warriors of Obas Oroghua amd Esighie when they invaded Owo in the 15th centuries. Ehinogbe quarter was like a refugee camp that welcomed people running away from the Oba of Benin. Omasan banished the Oshodin who was the head of the Ehinogbe quarter due to the latter's role in the invasion of Owo. Therefore Oba Omasan made his grandson Osere the head of the Ehinogbe quarter. Omasan died in the 1578.

What I find strange is his claim that oba Oroghua's princely name is unknown. If he was a 15th or 16th century king who spent time in Portugal for studies, one would have thought that he would have lived in Portugal under his princely name just like all the other princes who spent time outside the kingdom before their ascention to the throne. And if that was the case, wouldn't his residency records exist in the Portuguese archives? Have they not tried to make this trace?

Can now confirm the the Benin kingdom had already achieve that fit 300 years before the Ashanti's. Wrong to say the first educated Oba.From the definition of Education it is clear that these King's were highly educated in many ways more than those whom we now use their yardstick to determine who is educated. Please refer to history. That the King's became accuanted with the Europeans does not mean that they became educated as a result of these accuantances.

I appreciate this forum and it shows that there are a lot of woke Nigerians and Africa. We need to keep analyze concepts thoroughly and do our own extended research. We need to differentiate between literacy and education, and western education. What we see is that western education define education as formal and informal, which is rather fraudulent, because formal is referred to as the study and understanding western ways and systems, while informal refers to local cultures and traditions. This is part of the African problem today, as pointed out in PP Ekeh's the publics. The spokesperson is enlightened enough to decipher. History has it that there was a first wave of Christianity in Africa before the recorded Portugal and Spain interface. Reading, writing and speaking are all symbols and vehicles on communication, cause, Egyptians had hieroglyphics which people still read and interpret today. Scholars have pointed out and are still pointing out, that western education, religion and science are parts of tools of exploiting the Africans.

Many thanks for sharing this important piece of history. Your Great grandfather was born in 1914 as Oluale Kossola. The name Oluale Kossola is from the Yoruba tribe. The Oba of Benin is from the Edo tribe, but both tribes are related. The actual ship in which your late Great grandfather was illegally taken on, was scuttled to evade discovery, and was not found again until as recently as 2019. Amazing!!! As for education according to number of European historians and American European like Bruce Williams has admitted by 3300 B.C. that the African people of Nubians of the old Ta-Seti civilization which also later on become known as Kush Kingdom has invented writing. The Nubians teach the Egyptians by 3100 B.C. which there call the Medu Netcher writings while the Greeks call the Medu Netcher writings the hieroglyphics. The origin of the Greek alphabets came from Africa who the Phoenicians (Asian people) show the Greeks much simplified alphabets which has able to give the Greeks a first European language.

My brother you did a great job, our history should have be know to the world if not the British and the yariba (Yoruba), meaning the shady and unreliable people that distorted our history to covered the atrocity they committed against innocent Edo people or benin kingdom in 1897

adeoflagos Ade Your ancestors connived with the British to make sure that the Benin Kingdom comes to an end. And that’s after they brought their son to rule over the people for decades. Oba of Benin and his family are Yorubas and from the Yoruba land.

I thought it was only cultureless igbo who want to blame others for their misery. So Some idiots like you still looking for attention. Are you trying to say Yoruba stole your land like the British did? Don't let me start with you o 😅 I really don't like to insult Benin people. But stop this low self esteem mentioning of Yoruba.

Any country that tries to hide her history is simply saying that there should be no growth. All industries of the economy have a history guiding them. I loved this dialogue that I downloaded so that my kids will know about other cultures tho I am igbo.

Saying the first Educated King in Africa is an insult to the Africa and the whole people of Africa. How do you define education? And by the way, I am yet to see a Benin King dressed like the statue in this video. I am curious to know what changed that type of dressing or maybe I just haven't seen it yet? I need answers....as it will be helpful for my research.

Thank you so much for the interview "Nekpen" why is your name spelt this way madam?. I strongly believe You are a Benin (Edo) woman. Your name must be spelt as Enekpen and not "Nekpen". Are you afraid of the "E"?

Unless if you define education by Western standards. His definition of literacy is narrow & myopic. Our kings & queens have been literate from antiquity. Oba Orhobua was definitely not the first literate monarch in Africa. Oba Itokpehe, ise.

That is slavery questions, the language you speak today is Oyo language which was spread by the Christian missionary by translating English bible to Oyo language, if I may ask, why do you speak Oyo language instead of ile ife language were you all claim to have migrated from? Common sense is needed here.

Bini city is way far away from the seashore or from the coast. Bini is not a coastal region . SO HOW DID THE PORTUGUESE GET TO BINI ? The Portuguese did not also establish a place in the Niger delta. The Portuguese did not also settle in any Bini enclave . So Bini people have to explain where the Portuguese were stationed when they were having trade contact with Bini ..

there was a Portuguese influence on the Benin Empire. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portuguese explorers and traders established contact with the Benin Empire, which was a powerful and prosperous kingdom in West Africa. The Portuguese brought goods such as firearms, textiles, and European luxury items, which had an impact on the economy and material culture of the Benin Empire. They also introduced Christianity to the region, although it did not gain widespread acceptance. The Portuguese influence on the Benin Empire was primarily through trade and cultural exchange.

@@tralbriggs104 The Portuguese used the Atlantic Ocean to reach the Benin Empire. They sailed along the western coast of Africa, navigating the Atlantic waters to establish trade connections with Benin. The ocean served as a vital route for their ships to transport goods and engage in commerce with the kingdom. What your saying is rubbish we literally have recorded from the Portuguese describing what ancien Benin was like
