This actually happens often, more so with people who do not have degrees. Its a mixture between your network - so you must have a network, no matter what you’re level; secondly in his instance specifically, it would have been low risk investment give the financial backing but even separate from him, a good idea, with good financial projections at a micro economic level of the impact it would create - will also attract investors. Remember he did an MBA so he already had experience actually and is a genuine entrepreneur so they look at whats missing in the market vs demand. Hope that helps
