The first Motorcycles with AUTOMATIC transmission !

In this video you will see the history of motorcycle automatic transmissions. The first such motorcycles appeared just after the end of the Second World War. This idea, which was first used in scooters, is still used in scooters today only in a slightly modified form.

I take issue with what was said at 9:20 about the CB750A having hydraulic clutches. It does not. The TORQUE CONVERTER is simply kept full of fluid by an oil pump. No other use of fluid (oil) except for lubrication. The gearbox part of a CB750A is conventional for a motorcycle - with some exceptions: It only has Low Neutral High. It is larger and sturdier than normal. The gear-shift-fork was controlled by the rider's foot as usual - but the fork pulled and pushed on a ball bearing made into the center of the of the shift-couplers themselves. Simply put the gearbox part of a CB750A is a beast made to tolerate slam-shifting (there is no clutch - only the throttle to help it shift gears) until the end of time.

The DKW Hobby was an automatic scooter with a 75 cc engine and the same transmission as the DAF automobiles.They were made in the 50s in West Germany.

That's Salisbury scooter also had a automatic transmission. And I believe that was before WWII.

Jawa 250 is the first bike with automatic clutch which was revolutionary in 1963. An automatic clutch does not mean an automatic transmission, that is, you do not need to manually switch off the clutch when shifting.

You didn't mention the Jawa 210 Babetta mopeds that run a 2 speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) gearbox. Being only 49cc, this is probably the world's smallest DCT automatic engine.

Ours sat on the showroom floor for 3 years, never sold. If I remember correctly we did sell 2 of the 400 twins with that were automatic.

Learned the bike with a JAWA 250 in the late 70,s but in fact it is a semi automatic!

Back in the 60’s and 70’s they used to make hydraulic torque converter kits for minibikes and go karts. I’ve always wondered why they stopped making them.

Le double variateur a été monté chez Motobécane et Peugeot. Précurseur des boîtes CVT, inspiré des transmissions DAF. Honda a eu d'autres modèles. En 1976, la 400 Twin automatic, et plus tard, la DN 01. Autre marque oubliée, Aprilia, avec la 850 Mana... Ceci, sans parler des scooters en tout genre, depuis les années 80. Japonais, Italiens, voire Allemands, de chez BMW. Ou l'énorme succès des T-Max Yamaha...

I've always thought t hff at motorcycles with automatic transmissions were a good idea but the market has said otherwise. Since there is now a whole generation of people who can't drive manual transmission cars maybe slushboxes on bikes will cone into vogue. A modern cvt on a medium or large bike could definitely work.

Most bikers don't like the idea of automatic gears for motorcycles, not manly or macho enough. Personally I wouldn't have anything against an automatic especially in urban areas where having to constantly change into the right gear is a pain in the backside.
