Jumping on the non-discrete damage. Sand timers are really good for this. The board game Kero has a fantastic sand timer system where you roll dice with a sand timer and you stop rolling whenever you want, but you're trying to roll specific symbols on the dice before the timer runs out. You could apply this as where the defender tries to roll saves while the sand timer drains. So the longer you take to save, the more damage you take.

I often want to put timers into minis games, but they're a tough component to require for people to seek out, especially at specific grades.

@RuleofCarnage yeah and they tend to have wide tolerances in the target time. Saying that Space Hulk has one. I think you can probably get away with one per player, but going beyond that is going to be a tall barrier to the game.

I hardly understood any of that but it all sounds fascinating so i've ordered the book. I read Rick's book on the subject which was very enjoyable, but i'll assume yours has less references to tea, curry and last orders.

I don't remember mentioning tea or curry, though it can be hard to be certain.

Preordered and stoked to read! Really glad y'all are more than willing to share your knowledge and expertise, whether freely available here or in a more formalized book format

I really think that generally this is an area where most people are pretty generous with their time and knowledge.

I don’t recall ever hearing the word diegetic. I was non-diegetic until this morning…😊 great to hear these discussions.

Generally it turns up in film analysis, though its been popping up more and more in video game design in relation to things like diegetic UI.

I'm more curious to see what's in the book now, since you've intentionally excluded miniature games with a board. I'd have assumed those were in the scope of what you'd talk about. As for non discrete damage system. I can imagine each unit having like.. a dice tower? with a platform inside that has a hole in it. And you drop tokens into the tower and when something falls out.. the unit is killed. More powerful weapons drop more items in the tower. Maybe weapons with Armor Piercing abilities drop smaller objects? that would more easily fall through the hole? Certain actions might cause you to shake the tower.. anyway.. just a brainstorm on that idea ;)

Well, there can be a board, Redwood is certainly an example of a non-discrete game with a board, but these are not defined by their boards as a component in the way that a boardgame does.
