Don't feel bad for promoting your games. Quite the opposite, I would be upset, if you wouldn't mention them as I think they're up there with the best solo games available. Not talking about them would miss the point of the video for people who are looking to get into solo games. You don't want them to start with a game you have in your video, just to discover down the road that there are simple and fun games made by you. That could lead to upsetting moments :D So let me say that deth wizards is the game I play, if I don't play the silver bayonet.

@TeddyBearWriter Ай бұрын
@@ninelivessilvertongue3761 I think it is vague on purpose to allow you to use what you have. I have used Bandit/run down soldier minis for many of the curse of war and whisper from beyond enemies. Undead and Cultists for the whispers from beyond (mid level) and cultists and spiders for the ice heart court (mid level enemies). Warhammer Elves for the Fey of the Ice heart court (elite enemies) and some heavy armoured nazgul/evil foot knight type minis for the elite of the curse of war. i don´t have the right minis for every of the 10 types of enemies every faction has so as you can see i usually take just 2-4 different types of enemies and use them for a list.

The Core Space system is a really fun solo skirmish game, plus it's stupid good value for boxes full of quite ok minis and very cool and flexible terrain. Also Mantic's Hellboy may technically be a dungeon crawl, but it plays more like an asymmetric skirmish game and it's an amazing solo experience.

There are two base sets. A newer one seems to be more geared towards solo but either can be. The sets do have a slightly different feel with the older set being more generic sci-fi which could fit into other games easier. Like if you want to use the minis and terrain for other games as well.

@user-ov1nn1em4j
@user-ov1nn1em4j Ай бұрын
Just coming to confirm Five Parsecs is absolutely great for somebody looking for what it has to offer (haven't been able to try Five Leagues but I own it.) The one thing to keep in mind about the Five X games though is they are essentially one person RPG campaigns. The fluff is minimal or non-existent. A mission will tell you at the end to roll a d10 to see if you found a clue for your current quest. I'll never tell you what your quest is, what the clue is, or how the clue advances your quest. It will never tell you why you are on the mission you are on. But if you want to have an RPG campaign and don't have the time or means to get a group together, it can give you a ton to work with. You just have a lot more work to do on your end to build a narrative. If you want a more traditional miniatures wargame type campaign, definitely look into something like Silver Bayonet or -grave games instead
@timparks9833
@timparks9833 Ай бұрын
I’m on my second campaign! Love the system and narratives it creates. I really like that the narrative wasn’t established and instead uses random tables for you to come up with the narrative in your head easily. It makes the game as big or little as you want, and has infinite replayability.
@theandf
@theandf Ай бұрын
@@user-ov1nn1em4j agreed. I think Rangers/Silver Bayonet/Frost/Stargrave cater to a different need: they have linear campaigns with a specific lore in mind, you go through scenarios of a campaign devised by the author. In contrast, the Five Parsecs/Five Leagues/Five Klicks games are "sandbox" engines; they produce more varied (and randomized) results but they require you to provide the lore. Both fulfill a role, and I like both styles.

@joeschmoe201 Ай бұрын
I have forbidden psalm and even backed "The End Times" on Kickstarter by Kevin Rahman. However it is not a game I can recommend. On page 9 of the end times rule book you have, "Anyone who is prejudiced, bigoted or who thinks that abuse hatred of others based on sex, gender, ethnicity, or any other characteristic are acceptable should find a different game to play. This message should only offend someone with those views, so if you are offended by this message, THIS GAME IS NOT FOR YOU." Though I do beleive that there are only 2 genders, I am not offended by the message so much as I am offended that he thought it was okay to shove his left wing ideology into my escapism. The he/him on his X profile doesn't need my money if he wants to politisize something that should not have any politics in it. Just understand, if you are someone who believes in something like only having 2 genders, when you support him with your money, you are supporting someone who actively hates you. Have a nice day.

My two favorite ones I own honestly are Majestic 13 and Deth Wizard. These games have caught my attention when I first heard of them, then when I got hands on them I fell even further in love with them! Other than that, I am a fan of The Doomed for sure! I love Last Days by Ash Barker and published by Osprey, a Zombie game that has a fun base building mechanic (imho) Frostgrave as a solo game is one I like, but this requires 1 of 2 books (Perilous Dark and Mortal Enemies) One I fell in love with in the 1st edition, but I think the 2nd edition is better is Violent Dark by Black Site Studios. I would suggest it for anyone that loves Sci-Fi Horror! Lastly I would like to mention one that I own but haven't gotten to play yet (I'm currently printing off terrain for it) called "When Nightmares Come" which is one of the Osprey blue books. It's by Patrick Todoroff (the guy behind Zona Alfa) and has this strange and fun mix between Theatre of the Minds Eye role playing and Tabletop Solo/Co-op Skirmish. Basically it's like Scooby-Doo or Supernatural the tabletop game!

Gonna come back to this video if I think of a game to contribute, but I just wanted to gush about Forbidden Psalm and it's successors/supplements. One thing that absolutely solidified it as my favorite game was that it's SO fast to get a game going. The old-school-rpg character creation lets you go from "opening the book" to "on the table" in SERIOUSLY short time. You get to roll up your warband in just a few minutes and let your imagination do the work for why your characters have the attributes they have. I even used Forbidden Psalm to create a warband to do a solo, sea-faring roleplaying campaign of Mörk Borg where the other four members of my warband were ghostly crew members on the ship. The amount of flexibility the game has as well as the ease of getting to play is just straight up unparalleled.

similarly to how any miniatures game can be miniatures agnostic if you've got the will, i've found that most skirmish games can be solo if you've got the will have been playing necromunda solo without any particularly complex rules for the opponent (roll scatter die for movement, they attack if able, pacman rules for the opponent to avoid them getting stuck on board edges) and having a great time of course, dedicated solo rules usually lead to a much better curated and balanced experience, but it can so relaxing to just sit down with a rules set you're familiar with, miniatures you love to look at and just play. if you don't have scatter dice, just use a D10 and let the triangular shape of the die point the direction of the opponent's movement (and, if you like, also their move speed)

You mentioned the game in the beginning of the video, but not in a solo sense. Stargrave has some decent solo play supplements despite being initially designed as a 1v1 game. I’ve been playing through some of the Dead or Alive scenarios which is a solo scenario generator where you generate a character you are hunting for a bounty, their gang, the environment, and potential complications to the mission. It’s been a ton of fun. There are a few other supplements too that contain solo campaigns that play out very similarly to Rangers, but in space.

Sellswords & Spell-slingers is my go to solo/coop game. Designed to minimize the number of dice rolls (a hero can fight a horde of 12 orcs with one roll), and a really fun enemy activation mechanic. It’s the same designer as Song of Blades & Heroes (who you turned me on to, literally getting me back into tabletop games so thank you!)

I’ve just picked up Devilry Afoot which I discovered following an Amazon recommend…. It’s a lovely little book oozing with atmosphere with its dark gothic horror setting, werewolves and such set in the 14th-15th century, no idea how I missed this one? Regarding self promotion, it would be a disservice not include your own fantastic games catering for the solo player, they are up there with the best! 👌

i would also add Two Hour Wargames' Chain Reaction system. chain reaction was the original iteration that has developed into 5150, Nuts! and All Things Zombie. Designed for solo play, they can also be used for co-op and PvP.

Stargrave by Osprey and Bolt Action by Warlord Games. Stargrave through the recent supplement Dead or Alive. Bolt Action Version 2 plays fine at skirmish level through its random dice system and I hope version 3 does

Deth Wizards is an awesome solo game, been really enjoying it! Rangers of Shadowdeep is awesome! Can recommend Devilry Afoot, if you want some folk horror monster hunting, and Verrotwood if you want some folk horror where you play an evil cult in more evil woods

I'd recommend BATTLE SWORD, a cooperative or solo miniatures wargame aimed at adults with younger kids. very simple rules, miniatures agnostic so it can be used by any kind of miniatures the kids may have (fantasy, role playing miniatures, sci fi, historical, even toy soldiers, dinosaurs etc). cooperative because it is much nicer to play alongside your kids than against them. the rules are so simple the kids can even play solo on their own, when the adult does not have the time. Plus the rules are free, and works on any scale because the size of a unit is totally up to you (a single miniature for a skirmish game, or hordes of miniatures if so desired for a mass battle feeling)

I would recommend two really unknown but really fun games: The department, by Joe Dragovich, where you play as an officer hunting down humanoid androids, and Cazadores, by Jose Espinoza in Matachin games, which is a boss battler with a clever AI system for the hunted monsters. This last one is even free, and they should add a campaign system in some moment in the future.

I can vouch for Majestic 13 being a very cool game. Also, Stargrave and Frostgrave (Joe's other popular games) have solo/co-op add ons. Perilous Dark for Frostgrave and Hope Eternal for Stargrave.

Great vid, thanks. I only recently got into solo (and co-op) gaming, and it made me realise how little I enjoy competitive play. I'm a MASSIVE fan of Deth Wizards, I would have been upset if you hadn't included it, just because it's your own work! Also, since staring solo gaming, I've been heavily into terrain building, which has been great fun too! I'm currently building some 'hellscape' terrain for Reign in Hell - another awesome game from you and Vince.

Weasel-Tech from Nordic Weasel has a terrible name but is an excellent solo anime-style mech game. Captures the Gundam feel better than almost any other tabletop mech game out there (as opposed to the walking tank/Battletech side of things).

A solo/cooperative game I really like to play is Myth. While this is technically a board game, just a couple of minutes of gameplay videos will convince you that it's closer to a miniatures game with range and LoS on a movement grid. It's from the creators of one of the best skirmish games ever: Mercs. The game is a complex hybrid between a board game, a miniatures game and an RPG all driven by a clever activation system and a card combat mechanic. Basically you can build your stories "randomly" (following what's written on the map tiles) or using "quest cards" that drive you around the map towards the final goal. You can also set up asymmetrical skirmish battles by picking up a bunch of bad guys an throwing them on the map (modular, with variously sized tiles for rooms, outdoors etc) and fight them with your heroes (up to 4). If it's a one off you can gear up your hero to fit the task with various items or you can just keep a living character and use the battle to grow him... it's up to you. The game comes with a bunch of really nice miniatures, cards and tokens. Now, the bad news: the game died some years ago thanks to a very badly managed kickstarter... as a consequence you can be lucky enough to be able to snatch a KS edition for a very good price on ebay. I got mine for 40/50 bucks... and it's a lot of stuff. Today Ulisses spiele bought the IP and carried on the game development. It will eventually be re-released as "Myth - Dawn of Heroes" which is now free to download in print and play format so that you can demo the new game. I think Myth it's a really cool solo game as it gives you the freedom to use it a sandbox game where you create your stories in the Myth world. For some people this is too much freedom... to me it's just stimulating my fantasy and I like it a lot👍

Mork Borg a pretty good little rpg. It blasts your eyes with theme to get you going, then supports the GM with some default DCs and lots of generative tables so you can just riff on that theme for hours with your players. It's a lot of fun.

Yay for Ivan Sorensen and Chris McDowall. Now that Parsecs and Leagues are "done", let's get the world hooked on another Nordic Weasel solo masterpiece: Weasel-Tech. No it's not slow giant robots, it's quick and agile big exo-suits. Anime inspired action and drama (yes, interpersonal teen drama!)
