I'm 74. I can't listen and see Jimmy without crying like a baby. He touched me so profoundly and completely. I had the honor and one of my life's very, very special nights at his 80th birthday at the Blue Note. From my tears, he was blurry all night. R.I.P. you beautiful man.

On June 12 2014, Little Jimmy Scott died. Little Jimmy had a cameo in the music video for Madonna’s Secret. Madonna had this to say about Scott: “Jimmy Scott is the only singer who makes me cry.”

My uncle hated jazz. My dad tried to get him to listen to it, my brother... he said, "I still hate Jazz, but I LOVE Jimmy... the phrasing." Well, exactly, Jerry, as Cito Gaston used to say... Listen to "I'll Be Around." He sings... "Your latest.... love..." The long pause. He actually put quotes around the word "love" as if to say... that's not love. A genius at phrasing to say what it means to him.

I was lucky enough to go to Birland in NYC where he played every Feb 14th, Valintines Day for years. I would go and sit back in the back room with him and he would smoke cigarettes and tell me stories of him mom, the early years and how Decca ripped him off. You can't do that today or them, just go in the back room and I went every year, then he started to recognize me on the street and say " Hey I know you !".
