The Asian community has this very strange fetishizing relationship with the white community, which is honestly very similar to how some Americans fetishize Asian culture. It’s more applicable to older generations but it’s very noticeable, my mom and dad would always casually teach me how important it was to impress white people and my family elders. 0% joking or exaggerating

@@Givebackthescarf Well, I do appreciate context, but for Japan this isn't entirely accurate. I lost a very dear Japanese boyfriend because his parents wouldn't allow us to get married. We thought about defying them, as we really wanted to get married, but realized that we'd spend a lifetime in conflict, and that we'd likely find other people with whom to be happy. The couple whom we trust to raise our son if something ever happened to us is mixed, with her being Czech while he's Japanese. His family completely cut off ties with him because of her. Finally when their daughter was born, they agreed to meet her - except for one of his siblings, whom my friend will maybe never see again. Because of race. Having lived in Japan for 8 years, I absolutely know that as a Canadian/French person I was definitely treated better than friends who were black or SE Asian, and that's partly due to my pasty paleness for sure. So while you're definitely not wrong about white colour being "prized" by society, there are a lot of issues around "mixing the Japanese race" that many Japanese have It will change slowly, though - soon 1 in 10 kids in Tokyo will be biracial, I heard recently! (Although I didn't fact check that, so idk for sure) Oh, and since the conversation with my ex's dad was in Japanese, he used the words specifically for foreigner (the kind of rude one) and white-race (not complexion) 外人 and 白人

@@val.6724 Jimmy O Yang was born in HK around 1987. It means his dad Richard had been in HK no less than 13-14 years before their family moved to USA in 2000. Considering the education in mainland in the 60/70/80s, most immigrants from mainland in that generation speak very little English. Richard must pick up his basic English skill in HK. I was born in early 60s in HK. I have met many friends who are immigrated from mainland during that period of time. So what do you know differently?

It was a weird ass thing when I met my girl's parents. I came in there ready to eat humble pie, lay myself a lil low to show respect. He looks super stern, she looks super stern. Then they see my ass and light up like a kid on Christmas morning. Suddenly, he's kind of friendly, still obviously testing if I'm a scumbag or not. Twenty minutes later, we're having some drinks and he's forcibly separated me from her to hang out with me. We're talking cars, sports, hobbies, life, the bullshit at work (we have two very different careers). I left that house with more leftovers than I've had in my fridge in a whole year. Very bizarre experience.
