She's only between thirteen to fourteen years old in this performance. It's right after she was recognized widely in country music. The song "Blue" which was a song originally written for Pasty Cline, she passed away before she could record the song and the writer shelved it thinking nobody could do it justice, until he saw Leann Rimes decades later perform live at a festival. He sought her out to get her to record the song and Leann was only thirteen years old when she recorded it... it was her first charting hit song.

I remember that Blue was the first CD I ever bought, incredible voice. What really impressed me was when I saw her sing live on an awards show, unlike every other performance of the night, she sounded exactly like she did on the album.

Leann is great. I'd put her at the same lofty level as Lorrie Morgan (maybe a tiny bit higher). Lorrie's ''Crazy'' is amazing. She sang it with a stage full of Country Hall of Fame artists seated all around her. She got a standing ovation from the toughest crowd in country music. And, well deserved.

Fun story..... I was dating a girl in the mid 90s who fancied herself a country singer. She wasn't bad but she only sang really slow, soft songs. No variety at all. She performed at a local variety show that had seen a lot of up and coming singers over the years. My girlfriend sang well, but nothing extraordinary. Her usual slow song while standing in one place. Then... The MC announced this new young talent that had been making waves in the area. Out came a 12 year old Leann Rimes. She sang her heart out. She worked every inch of that stage like a pro. Put my 25 year old girlfriend to shame. Within months she was all over the radio.

There is a performance she did that was in some kind of lounge that is out there on video. I saw it years ago. The woman can sing anything. But, here bluesy sort of gospel work is just crazy good. She has effortless control of her range. Just a beautiful voice. If it weren't for the silly drama brought out about her years ago she'd be far more know in the mainstream. Your point about the song being different every time is spot on. That is part of her control and ability to improvise. She has the ability to move around the melody so easily that it never sounds "programmed". I love that.
