WOW … Just WOW !!! I can honestly say this was the most engaging, insightful and truly heart warming interview I think I have ever seen, just impossible to stop listening. Deans love for the majestic river Trent resonates with me also as it’s my local venue (a little upstream between Derby and Burton-on-Trent). It’s not often that a bloke who is not only a local legend in these parts, but a National and arguably international legend of his sport can speak so openly and candidly about so many topics (professional and personal) … I felt his pain during the chat and equally shared his obvious enthusiasm and passion for the sport. Oh to spend a couple of hours on the bank with this absolute gent… Dean you are one of a kind pal please NEVER change just keep ‘doing what you do best’ 🎣

Absolutely brilliant podcast. Massive thanks to Dean Barlow for opening up. To me the biggest thing I take from it is when he spoke about fishing has no class. I was brought up in a pit village in Hetton Le Hole, Co Durham and fished the Wear at Chester le Street. My first go at fishing was on the Wear when I was 6 when my Father took me. It was snowing and the water was at least 6 to 8 feet above normal and I had a Woolworths rod and reel set. Yes you are so right Dean anyone can go fishing. Thanks again. Thanks also to Mat for the interview.

Thanks for the lovely comments about Jan. Dean was right about Frank taking him under his wing. Jan thought the world of the Barlow family. I remember Frank with great fondness from the match scene and how he was so kind to myself “Jan’s baby Brother” as he called me. Good luck with everything to you all.

Fantastic as always! These have been so amazing for my mental health it's unreal. I'll tell you now I would give my left testical to fish for my country. And I'd go even further to say i would sell my pole and Only fish feeder if it meant I could have a glimpse at fishing for the lions. Can't thank you enough for the content you put out. You're moving mountains for this sport. God bless.

Dean is a legend great angler.... Just got back into fishing after being diagnosed with cancer myself want to catch a few before it's too late. I have been watching all the podcasts with some incredible anglers and more importantly great people. As Dean said "you think these times will last forever with your dad" and you think your parents are invincible, unfortunately I know through bitter experience they're not.

Dean... what a cracking person you have become! Fishing aside, your life story and values are inspirational. I am one of the Middlesbrough lads who used to stay with you all. Mo and your Dad gave me my life chance when I decided to move from Middlesbrough to Nottingham in 1985. I only knew your family, I had no job and I was allowed to stay there for a week (it was closed season so you weren't taking guests), but had to find more permanent digs. I arrived in my red Avenger car which I parked outside but couldn't afford to run it. You took the piss saying it was a cardboard cut out. I have so many memories of your Dad, Mo, you and your brothers... thanks to you all for giving me a roof over my head. Your Mam and Dad would be proud of you and your values. Cheers!

@@deanbarlow4217 I remember having a heart out covered in Rhodamine dye for gozzers. You had a little puppy which ate it then went around the house crapping fluorescent red stuff which stained the carpets. Your Mam wasn't happy! Great memories. Keep well mate.

Dean, you are an inspiration, your Mum and Dad would be so proud of you, your attitude and passion is awe-inspiring. I lost my Dad a week ago, and I like you all I can think is "why me, why my Dad?" just listening to you has helped me think and open my mind to the future. Never being able to wet a line with my Dad again is a hard thought to have but we must move on and celebrate what we had. Thanks pal, good luck for the future and I wish you and the England team every success! Love to all, Robbo

Brilliant podcast Dean. Also one of the Middlesbrough lads who stayed at your mam and dad's for a week whilst your dad coached us for div 3 national. Remember him taking us for a tour of a maggot farm near Newark. Took us in the fly house then turned lights off and shook the pipes. He ran outside and locked door.Flies in every orifice! 15 of us screaming to get out whilst your dad was outside wetting himself. What a week and what a man. Legend

The Waveney AC had Deans dad Frank to coach us on the Trent nationals. The first day of our practice week we were feeder fishing. He was walking along the bank looking at our gear. Asking us to reel in and seeing what out terminal gear was like. Telling us to change hooks longer hook length etc. He got to our captain Bernie Turner and when Bernie reeled in he said “swing the rod round” he then grabbed the tip and broke two inches off saying “it’s too soft”! Bernie was horrified but Bernie asked him to fish that National for us. Caused a bit of controversy at the time as we got a bronze medal! Frank was actually a member of the club and registered to fish so it was ok. We stayed at his house.
