It was an excuse used by the writers so they could make this love triangle. It was so shockingly uninteresting and didn't add anything to the plot but needless drama and dysfunction with no resolution or purpose to any of the arcs or conflict. They could have used that time to provide better and more complete character arcs which would better serve the message of overcoming your own selfish wants and obsessions in order to sacrifice yourself for the greater good.

It is! Like, Lila trying to go off herself to check out the timeline subway, Diego catching her and saying something like, ni uh, you’re not going alone, so they end up going together. So instead of Diego going with Luther to CIA quarters, Five goes with him because he was actually a bit suspicious of his boss, then they discover the CIA top members were also part of the keepers. During the whole show we’ve seen Five doing whatever it takes to solve the problem, so instead of trying luck in the timeline subway, it’d make more sense for him just to go straight to verify if his boss/job are also part of the problem.

The worst part IMO is that I read the showrunner basically just wanted to do a storyline of Five having a (human) romantic relationship. So like, they just threw away two seasons of Lila/Diego buildup, just so Five can have a kiss??? Like not only does Five not need a romantic storyline IMO (not every character needs a romance, especially when the main component of the show is the family relationship) but if you so desperately want him to have a girlfriend or boyfriend, write him his own love interest. Don't just shove Lila at him! The Five and Lila dynamic was much more interesting as this frenemy/anatognistic/reluctant work partners.

The writers this season should be ashamed. The 5 and Lila thing was gross and weird. It added nothing, it actually made the ending hard to watch for no reason. And we can't take the actors out of it. Imagine if the genders were swapped and a guy well into his 30's was kissing on an actress that was on the show as a minor? Or imagine the same scene with 5 happened but he made out with other Ben or one of the grown male Sparrows, it would not only never fly, the show would be getting dragged in a different way, but because it's an older woman, they thought it would be fine and it was not at all, it was beyond uncomfortable and for what? So much of this season was pointless too. Jennifer did not need to exist, Ben should have actually interacted with the family, the squid monster could have just been from him alone considering his powers. They really had Klaus lose all character growth and then became trafficked into sex slavery while simultaneously removing his gayness, again, they knew they could get away with a woman "rhymes with graping him" IMO without people pointing out how screwed up and weird that story is for him to go out on. The writers... I would be ashamed, I would have had them remove my name from the credits behind this season.

Especially for the final season, his biggest character story was the Dave thing, it's almost as bad as Sloane and Ray just not being present for me. But that one is my opinion, I know that won't bother everyone, but it bothered me. It felt like he just got tortured and everyone got weirdly forced sexual interactions with women that added nothing, including the one that could have at least broken that pattern up so it wasn't so one sided.

No man, You are so right! The writers and I also argue Steve Blackman did Five, Lila, and Diego so incredibly dirty. As someone who loves the show and the comics, it is so frustrating that they basically destroyed all of the character development of these 3 characters with this love triangle, only to give Five a love interest according to Blackman. It makes no sense that Five should have had a love interest especially when the only romantic relationship he has had was with a mannequin in his own mind during the orignal apocalypse. It is so out of character for all of them but especially for Five! If they wanted Five to have a relationship so bad, they should have bought Delores to life in the time reset at the end of season 3 or just had a whole new character. I honestly think this made how the show ended so much less impactful and it saddens me because the ending I was happy with but the sacrifice is overshadowed by what happened with Five, Lila, and Diego. Really like the idea of Lila and Diego stuck in the train station. I would add sending 5 to search for them. Since time works different in the station he can spend months or years searching for them. Popping back and forth between the main timeline and the station. Gaining mastery of the station, meeting the council of 5s and planting the journal or instructions for Lila or Diego to find to return to the main timeline. You'd still have the plot point of 5 finding out the cleanse needs to take them all, and would heighten Lila and Diego having to decide to let the purge take them after they've spent 7 years repairing their relationship. Great video and analysis, I agree with most of the points. Although I don’t understand why no one talks about how abusive Lila is to Diego, and how gross that is. I get she was also traumatized, being raised by the handler, dead parents, and cruddy upbringing, but every season she has been in one way or another lying to Diego, manipulating him, degrading him by calling him names in front of their family and children. And we are just suppose to laugh it off? Yuck, no thank you. I like Diego too much to agree with the way writers wrote his love story. In season One, he was the to worry about his family, he had friends outside, he worked hard, and yeah part of his trauma was trying to still be a hero, be number one, and we were getting good story arcs out of it. But they ruined that. Regarding their married life, something else no one brings up is that they are both bored and stuck. Their marriage is stressful and abusive, but even while Diego wants to go back to being a hero, he’s not the one infiltrating secret groups and lying about it. That’s Lila, whose going behind Diego’s back and wanting to recapture the thrill of the secret game, it’s her fault that they got stuck in those trains, and she didn’t give a single care to her children when she decided to pull Five into adventuring the trains. She only cared after she saw the consequences, and still cheated on Diego. Cheating is so gross and wrong, I hated those scenes so much I skipped over the whole Five/Lila scene. They try to frame it as if he never listened to her, as if Diego had been the one suffocating Lila with family pressure, but they lived with her family not his. She was just unhappy and took it out on Diego. I am in serious mode of pretending this season did not happen. And like a few have said before, the messy story telling, broken story lines, and incoherent plot this scrip felt like it was written by AI.

The storyline of the 2 CHARACTERS together I can definitely see the chemistry, but as actors it’s different, in the end, they are NOT their characters. You hear about girls who are technically of age being forced to kiss older men and they were uncomfortable but didn’t speak up. Yes, thank you. I never thought of the incredibles comparison but it def makes sense n fits lila and diego. I do think Diego's plot with the CIA still fit perfectly for his character development because for the most part it was still him thinking of being hero to his when he didnt have his powers, and he gets his realization that the CIA agent life would pull him from his kids n he doesnt want that. The five and lila plot was totally unneeded for this season's main plot. if it wasnt in there it wouldnt have made a difference to the big story. it felt like a fandom wrote it for season 2 or 3 before lila and diego were settled. Ok here are my thoughts. Diego and Lila have build so much and it’s messed up to throw it away. I always saw Lila and 5 as a friendship standpoint. I feel like if anyone got stuck in the tunnel one of them would have to be 5 since he is the one with the power but I don’t think it makes since for Lila to go with him. This whole plot goes against 5s entire character. Them falling in love feels so forced and unnatural. Also if you think about legal things, since Diego is married to Lila and 5 is Diego’s brother, Lila and 5 are siblings in law. When I saw this in the show I wanted to cry. I feel giving 5 a love interest could have helped develop to character a lot but having it be Lila just reversed most of 5s character development. Also again 5 killed Lila’s parents.

I hated this storyline so much. Not only that, their mission didn’t even go anywhere. Five could have been a good uncle and brother, comforting Lila by promising that he’ll get her home to her kids. Nah, he was the one who encouraged her to stop. And he’s supposed to be what, 70+ years old right? He should have been wiser than this. He’s had six years to find the life he missed. I also hated the Klaus storyline. Literally did nothing for this tight season. Since this season Ben played such a huge part, I wished they had focused on each sibling teaming up with Ben. There was so much story potential there, like Ben still being angry at the Umbrellas cause his life got wrecked when they arrived, the family he knew was gone, so much stuff. It’s like Steve Blackman just went: Fuck it, it’s generous Netflix gave us one more season before canceling us, so whatever.

The fact that Five got lost with an actual woman instead of a mannequin, but nothing else. This season made me completely forget that Five killed Lila's parents, and that is the worst writing I've seen in a long time. It would have been at least okay if Lila and Five realized later that they were just really good friends that got confused, but them doubling down on the relationship when they got out just made it even worse. She doesn't even explicitly choose either one before they get erased, they end in a love triangle. Maybe they could have done this with Klaus and Lila, genuinely, because in-character it would make sense at least even if it would still suck in application. Just make a new character for FIVE! Hell!
