I think the reason that Mario and Yoshi are in the first game is because the original creator at the time didnt know how to draw the other sonic characters so he just put those 2 in instead.

Five Nights at Warios did the same thing where the games started as mediocre clones but eventually went on to be their own thing also i had been a huge wwwWario fan before i even realized it was him who made the games so that was a pleasant surprise
