@arthur5dent Allow me to clarify. The battles will always matter to the gangs in question. Although for the irish this was primarily a matter of self defense. In real life the so called Natives were notorious for assaulting irish immigrants. Even as they were getting off the boats. The real Bill Cunning was very racist and confrontational. Fast forward to the present and gangs in the U.S. are fighting either for control of the local illegal drug trade. Or for territory which they frankly do not own. So it is what it is.

The very moment you realize that right up until the 1880s, transportation, lighting, and the mindset of people were still the same as that of the Imperial Roman period and the Middle Ages. Everything and every technological innovation we have today came from 1880s onward. At the time of this legendary gang battle, homes were still lit and heated with the same implements that a farmer in Anglo Saxon England would be familiar with. But 20 years later, the D-cell flashlight was invented and was available to purchase at one of the very stores on that same street.
