You forgot the hanger-outer. He doesn't actually work there, and he's not buying anything, or even looking - he just hangs out there (presumably he knows the owner), butting in to everybody else's conversations. The strange thing is, no other retail establishment has this guy. You don't see him at oh, let's say, Jo-Ann fabrics, hanging out near the sewing machines telling people that Singers suck, and he wouldn't have anything but a Bernina.

I used to have the people who just wanted to "hang out" come in to the knife store I managed all the time. Some of them were great, others not so much. The ones who got in my way when trying to sell a $500+ knife really pissed me off. We also had so many "experts" come in it wasn't even funny. Why it was truly amazing how many 18-25 year old knife fighting "experts" there were in those suburbs.

That’s part of the gun store culture dude. I’m not saying that guys should always drop their 2 cents and interrupt but it’s the same thing as car meets or why people hang at bars. Also, think of it this way. If a customer that actually knows his crap points you in the right direction from mr. overly opinionated car salesman guy trying to sell you a 226 legion when you went looking for p 365. I’m just saying. I learned a lot from other customers early on and I get that if you’re in a hurry it can seems a bit frustrating but there are more people with valuable knowledge out there than I think you give credit for.

You were correct about the Military expert that never fired a gun except for basic training. I just watched a retired GENERAL with a reporter on CNN displaying how dangerous a weapon such as the AR-15 is. His first statement was about how "LOUD" it was. ( Inside Range) Then he shows how powerful it is by shooting slow and not holding the gun properly against his shoulder so it jumps around stating that was semi automatic. NEXT - Believe this if you can. He then tell the reporter to watch this: Saying I'm going to put this gun in : +++FULLY SEMI AUTOMATIC+++ Yes he said "FULLY SEMI AUTOMATIC" and that means he pulled the trigger faster. What a propaganda spouting TURD this retired general was. It's no wonder we are losing wars with generals like this idiot. This is now on you-tube so you can look it up for yourself.

I sell guns part time for fun at a gun store. I do push my opinions when I see someone asking for something that wouldn't work for them. I like to show them what they want to see and explain the pros/cons, then show them some competitive options. In your example of a 642 j frame, I will show them that gun, explain some pros/cons, then show them some similar and different competitors, like the LCR, LCP, G43, Shield, etc. I've had plenty of older women wanting a home defense gun come in wanting a j frame type 5 shot revolver because it's "simple." I always first ask questions for the use, experience, what they're looking for, etc. If it's a woman who is recoil sensitive and doesn't have much experience shooting, I will recommend a full size 9mm over a airweight 38/357. At first they are skeptical, but I've had a few who have came back after buying something like a full size M&P, G17, G19, etc, and thank me for steering them in that direction because they love shooting it because the light recoil, and have since tried a friends j frame and hated it because they couldn't hit due to sights/trigger and hated the recoil. I've even got a few older women set up with an AR15 (usually a m&p15) and a red dot, and got them to sign up for our carbine course and they couldn't be happier. It was the same situation where she wanted a small pocket rocket revolver because she thought it would be easy to shoot, and just assumed an AR would have a ton of recoil. I've sold people guns I thought were completely wrong for them and what they were going to use them for, but some people (typically successful men in the 50-65 age range I've found) who know the least don't want answers to questions, they want to tell you why you're wrong and why *insert dumb cliche gun saying* is always true.

I ran across a guy over a year ago that doesn't fit your list but should be on it, and rated number 1. Most gun stores stock the guns they sell a lot of. I buy guns that I consider unique, very nice, and will have collector value. This means most of what I buy are special orders. Well, this employee told me they didn't carry it (I already knew that, just order it fool) and told me to get it elsewhere. So I did. And got the next 7 guns elsewhere too. Needless to say when the manager found out he was pissed. That employee was fired from that business months earlier for other reasons, but the manager had a talk with his staff about it to make sure that doesn't happen again. And I had to reestablish a business relationship with that store again. All is cool now. You don't stay in business by selling a product to a guy. Rather you stay in business by selling ANOTHER product to that guy. I'd like to visit your store but distance probably prevents that. Thanks for the vid.

Just by speaking with him, or listening to him speak with others, it's clear he hopes for the day he gets to shoot and kill someone "in defense". He talks about thieves or someone breaking into his home or car with a grin on his face because it means he gets the opportunity to blow their brains out. He does not believe in calling 911. He owns a .308 and night vision for the express purpose of putting down fleeing invaders by shooting them in the back at 100 yards. Despite this he's decent at his job and you don't want to fire him/stop shopping there because his Unhinged nature and aura of violence does not prevent him from checking magazines and lube out at the register. These are the same "Don'ts" I was taught when working for a BMW Motorcycle dealer. Sometimes the customer knows exactly what he or she wants, other times they don't know what they want and you need to probe them for exactly what needs they need met. Adapting my MC Dealer training: 1) What do you need? 2) Are you really going to be an enthusiast or is it your intention to just have it as an emergency tool alongside your first aid kit or fire extinguisher? 3) If looking for a rifle, once again, what is it for? How far do you want to be able to hit something? How hard do you need to hit it? 4) How many tasks do you want it to do? (Hunting, recreational shooting and home defense?) Just a few questions I would ask one who is just starting

There are experts like it in any field. The ones that drive crazy are the type who sound like they are saying something useful until you wait for awhile and realize it is all vague, commonly said stuff. Sometimes it combines with doing a segue on top of the thing they partially explained. They say stuff like "buy quality ammunition", or "clean your firearm properly", or "apply just a little drop of quality gun oil at the right spots", or "you need to buy the firearm that suits your needs", and somehow they can talk like that without saying anything specific, for an hour. None of it is news to the person on the receiving end, but the person pontificating will go on like they have something intelligent to say.

I’m a 72 year old retiree and look it, so it’s irritating when I go into a gun store and get a superior attitude from a young employee. What they don’t know is I was a cop for 30 years and survived three gunfights w/my issued thirty-eight so I know a little something about fighting w/a gun.
@brentprosser55635 жыл бұрын
Old Cop i mean no disrespect when I say this, but most cops don’t really know anything about modern ballistics and most of them give absolutely horrible advice. I work in a gun store and don’t get commission (something I’m glad for because it means I’m always going to be thinking of the customer first). Most cops send their wives in to get a 380 ruger or a 5 shot revolver that’s incredibly light and has a ton of recoil. It takes me a long time to get the misinformation their “cop” husband has filled them with. The 380 round is not a good primary carry round. I’ve participated in ballistics tests where it will barely get through denim. Yet, most cops think it’s what their loved one should be carrying. They don’t understand that smaller guns are more “snappy” and bigger guns mitigate recoil. I shoot with a lot of cops, some of which are on swat and other specialized task forces. The overwhelming majority of them are absolutely dreadful at shooting. I’m glad you survived your gun battle, but people wear bullet proof vests all the time now. Not to mention the sympathetic nervous response (fight or flight) affects humans in horrible ways concerning gun usage. The national statistics are thus: guaranteed 3 misses. Nationally, 80% of all gun shot wounds in shootings are in extremities (arms/legs) and aren’t necessarily game winners. So, applying that to my recommendation to carry 17+1 (glock g45, g17, FN 509, Sig P320 X-Carry, etc.) you’ll only land 3 shots in center mass.

Brent Prosser What I was talking about was the gun store employee, or a random customer, who tries to come off as a ninja warrior telling me not to carry anything that does not start w/a four and holds at least 14 rounds w/three extra mags.

You forgot one worse than the know-it-all, the guy/gal who would prefer every customer to know exactly what they want to buy before you walk in and you even asking to see a gun from behind the counter is the biggest annoyance they have ever had to endure and how dare you disturb them from doing nothing would you please just buy your s*** and get out sort of employee, or as I affectionately call them..."Walters" (Jeff Dunham reference). I don't mean to be rude, but there have been a lot of advancements in the 1911 platform in that time. New steel, better machining and tighter tolerances have made them much better than the old ones. They are now match grade and many people use them in competition. (Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, Springfield Custom, etc.) The .45 cartridge has also seen advancements. I own and carry a 1911, and though I am 6'3", 285lbs, I still like to carry .45 over 9mm or .40. This is only my preference. I like the way they point. I don't like glocks. You can sell people whatever fits their hand, everybody's different. But just cuz I started with a 1911 at summer camp and prefer it to say, a beretta and a s&w, does not make me old. The fact that I have lived on the planet for a while makes me old. Shoot straight and stay safe. (No matter the caliber.)

So far the worst gun store employee ive met was a 'starer' the kind of person who contines to give a thousand mile stare at you through the whole store while not saying a word like he expects you to steal something.
@robinstewart6510 Жыл бұрын
Guy, get rid of your paranoia. The gun store employee's job is to be there to help you if you need it. The only possible way he can know that is to look at you or watch you, waiting for some indication from you that you need help instead of just sightseeing or whatever.

@mikerbikex66566 жыл бұрын
I subscribe for the entertainment, as much as for the information. As an old guy (Someone said "AARPer." That's me.) I believe that we continue to learn, throughout life, partly by listening to the opinions of others, even when we disagree. Listen (really listen) and you learn that people sometimes use irony and satire in their statements. That's you. Many people don't get it. That's your former sub "tponn." When you speak in your usual way, people like tponn take your comments literally. It's their loss, even if they aren't bright enough to know. So you bashed us old 1911 and revolver types. Since I make fun of myself over my preferences, you might as well do the same. I've also encountered all of the salespeople that you described. I also know that I'm smarter than they are, much better looking, and know more about firearms than all of them. I feel blessed that I have access to a local gun shop, where the owner knows my name and my preferences and treats all of his customers with respect. He always starts his sales process with questions and actually wants to help people make decisions. Now, I think I'll put my Model 10 revolver into a holster and one of my 1911's in a case, saddle up, and ride over to the range. Keep doing what you do, and if I ever get to Pompano, I'll stop in. You can take that as a threat...or not.

Recently had an OUTSTANDING experience at a Cabelas in Washington state . I announced I was there for a specific type of rifle but not sure the specific model . He brought them all up on the screen with all the features and prices. I chose what fit my needs and he asked what else I needed and one by one we closed the deal without any hard up-sells. In fact he steered me away from a few higher ends products that didn't fit my situation. End result I got what I came for, he got a sale, but more importantly that store got a new regular customer. And it's an hour each way from my house. But based on my experience it's well worth the drive. However I also recently had a #5 situation , 20 minutes from my house that resulted in me taking that same money right back out the door. Despite also announcing I was there to make a purchase. And the rifle in question was a good old Ruger 10/22. One of the most common rifles in America that pretty much sells itself, but dude just couldn't get out of his own way.

I'm 10 minutes from Cabelas. Their only problems are gun prices (compared to shopping on line and sending it to an FFL) and ammo availability. With a store that huge the ammo area should be twice as large, and better stocked. The customer service is decent, though

I will contend that guarding a ship in the middle of the night under the military's restrictive rules has more in common with home defense / CCW than infantry does. Even in combat arms MOS's, Not all infantry qualify with a pistol. Navy Quarterdeck watches do. Having said that, the Navy does not have very impressive weapons training for the everyday Sailor, Even those required to guard the ship. As a result, I bought my own weapon and trained on my own time and dime in order so that I could be a better sentry while on duty.
