In ASOIAF, what exactly is this five year gap that podcasters and youtubers keep talking about? There's no gap in time during the books, it runs sequentially. So what is it? It is your lucky day. In this video, break down what it was, why it existed, what happened to it, and where it is today in these books that we love. And how it is responsible for A Feast for Crows.

@@JoeMagician fun fact: my Hungarian copy (2004) of ASoS names it the 3rd part of "the very popular trilogy" on the front cover, and it mentions in the back that GRRM is currently working on the fourth part of the series, which is called A Dance With Dragons

It all makes sense now. GRRM is a literary hoarder. He is buried under all his piled-up characters and locations and plot ideas, unable to part with anything. No wonder he has so much trouble getting unstuck and moving forward faster than a turtle's pace.

So his greatest *strength* - having so many good ideas for a story - is also his greatest *weakness* - he wants to put all those ideas into that story and make them all work together. How poetic! 😂

While I read the books, I just imagine that the time it would take the characters to travel from one location to another as it takes months for King Robert to travel to Winterfell and the same or more to get back. As well, you have to imagine that there are just seemingly never ending circumstances in which time is passing while the characters are experiencing days, weeks, months and even years of everyday life. They have to eat, sleep and poop too. For example, in the case of Arya's travels through Westoros, a lot of time must have passed while Yoren led them along with a wagon full of criminals. They had to gather food and firewood for many people. They probably passed many nights sitting around fires and especially if the weather didn't cooperate, wagons getting stuck, horses to be fed and shoed, dealing with Kingsguard, the Men Without Banners, Harrenhal and other instances. During this time Arya is also practicing her dancing skills. To me, this concept is not really anything to waste time worrying about so much. Let the readers insert their own imaginations and timelines. That is part and parcel of enjoying a great read.

Nice Video, it presented some aspects I didn’t knew before. But I always asked myself why grrm didn’t do a 2 or 3 year gap. I guess 2-3 years of training for sansa Bran and Arya are better than just a few months. A telling 2 years in flashback seems doable to me. Anyway @Joe Magician do you think grrm changes the stories for his younger characters a lot compared to his original plan? Have a nice Christmas over there in the US

His adaptation to the decision to ditch the gap is a little questionable. Arya WoW sample chapter features her being consistently cat-called by sailors in Bravos and using her sexuality to her advantage frequently... While being eleven. That kind of thing tracks for a 16 year-old, but I don't think real medieval peoples had pedophilia in such prevalence. I don't think she's even hit puberty yet.

I personally don't pay that much attention to the dates of the events since it is so dense that timing usually doesn't make so much sense. Imo, GRRM develops the characters beautifully but when you look at the dates and ages it takes away from the story. When I read the chapters I disregard the supposed ages of the characters and focus more on the mental/physical portrayals of the characters.

Nicely produced video!! Short and sweet. It’s fun to think about what might have been, and what might be if he finds a way to fit in a several years-long gap after TWOW to make the young starks more fitting for their endings. Likely not, but I feel like it’s not totally off the table for him.
@JoeMagician
@JoeMagician 3 жыл бұрын
That's the odd part, he did not solve his problem of the young POVs. There could be a multi-year gap after TWOW to fix that. Although he seems to have shifted to playing on the idea that his characters are not ready and are in over their heads on purpose.

Really whenever I sit and bitch about Martin not releasing the last two books, I stop and really look at the world he created and how we as fans and the community see it. We see these videos and stop and see how deeply things are connected and there are literally no errors whatsoever. It's just amazing. I know that Martin has to be a realist and realize that he may not finish his books, and have talking points and main plots outlined, as well as a ghost writer. I can go off when my life is bad and I am in a place where I need to go to another world, he has provided me that world and it's got me through some of the toughest times of my life. Now my life has been back together and I fought of the demons I had to, for many years now I go back and visit this world and catch all the stuff I missed and these here videos are great and it's taken for granted all we can sit and do with a WiFi connection and a phone. Thank you.
