Spot on Alex. Most lucid and realistic analysis of the post Roman period. I believe from coinage evidence that the Iceni had strong Germanic influence equally

Excellent. Reading the chronicles and other accounts is not always exciting. I’m happy you’re sharing your enthusiasm for these stories.

Thank you; I actually really love it because they in very few words summaries some really complex events and you have to bring them together with archeology and folk law to understand what's happening! It's a bit confusing but a great bit of fun!

Brilliant video. Ever since hearing about Ida the first time, I've wanted to know more about him. I first read about him in The Last Kingdom book series (which I know you dislike) and he was mentioned a few times. He even gave one of the later books "The Flamebearer" its name (I won't spoil incase someone reads this comment and hasn't caught up). In the books, a song about Ida was mentioned a few times and I never knew if Cornwell had simply made it up or if there really was a song. Since you explained that there are very little sources about him and certainly not any songs, it has been cleared up. We know so little about these men but simply knowing their names and tiny bits about their life is what makes it so interesting. Ida the Flamebearer is definitely a badass name, I wouldn't mind being known by that title 1500 years later either. The ethnic part of the video was good as well. In school we talked about the migration period (375-6th century) and how historians in the past have made the mistake of thinking that these groups like saxons, franks, goths etc were closed ethnic groups. As you said, this led to several wrong racial beliefs and WW2. These days we know better (although that can still change if new evidence comes up) that these groups weren't ethnic groups but more like confederations of various smaller groups that had different religious beliefs, belonged to different cultures and even could have spoken different languages. So there is no "Goth". Just different groups that banded together to become stronger. Again, great video! Thanks for making it

Thank you, say if you would ever like to work together or do a collaboration! Did I see on your community page that you're doing something about Coffi? Great topic! Nice to see we are both coming at it but from the Bernician and Derian points of view!
@stepthroughhistory2 жыл бұрын
@@AlexIlesUK of course, would be dam marvelous. We could start with a simple aim, to complete a bernician/deiran project without culminating in a civil war for the first time ever? I am, I am doing the Northumbrian conversation to Roman Catholicism (the Roman theme you mention comes through strong) but it's essentially a life of Edwin and a focus on good old Coifi. Really looking forward to your vids that will cover the bit before I decided to start.
@AlexIlesUK2 жыл бұрын
I cover that in the Ad Gefrin series if you would like to watch something now - my next video is Aethelfrith so it's next Monday before Edwin, but yes - I think we can manage no civil war until the end of our series.... Then we can look at a Collaboration!

Yet again you're demonstrating that human society has ALWAYS been complex. It's very interesting. That King had a girl's name,lol! Back in the 1960s,my school years the idea was that the East was far away. I mean we were here and they were there and never the twain did meet. It wasn't just school that promulgated this world view,it very much was soaked into the media (can't think of right word,I'm starting to have trouble recalling the exact right word,uh oh). It was only about 20 years ago I found I was reading books that showed me that at the time of Jesus for instance,with fair weather you could sail from Tyre in the Med to Cornwall or Galway in Ireland in a few days and the Phoenicians did. They were great traders. I was also really surprised when I first learned that Vikings ruled Sicily. They were men of the icy north what were they doing in the sunny Med. They never taught us that at school. By the way I have my own personal theory that St Paul got acquitted at Rome,because he always did and he achieved his dream to go to Spain. I think it is him who is buried at Santiago de Compostela but over a few hundred years the local people forgot the details so they picked St James erroneously because they'd heard of him. The place is obviously a place of psychic resonance.
