My dad was a lighthouse keeper in the 1970s and was stationed all over the British Isles. He only served on one rock station during his time as a keeper, The Smalls, situated 20 miles west of the Welsh coast. He kept a diary during that time, and the entries often read of how isolating the experience was, and how he was itching to get back to land. Not a natural place for man, miles out to sea with only two other men for company and a radio or TV if one was lucky. On that very lighthouse, almost 180 years before my father kept watch, Thomas Howell had been driven mad by isolation, with no-one but his deceased fellow watchman for company. He couldn't be relieved for four months, due to bad weather. When he was finally rescued, it quickly became standard policy to assign three keepers to a lighthouse, should anything happen to one of them. A film called 'The Lighthouse', released in 2016, recounts this haunting tale. Thanks for the video. Very interesting.

This is one of my favorite of these stories. Lighthouses have always held an eerie fascination for me. Adding to a location on the edge of civilization. It seems most likely that one man was always inside the lighthouse. While he viewed the other two fighting for their lives trying to retrieve something or do a needed job, the other must have hastily gone out to help, only to realize within seconds that he was, himself, caught in the deadly storm. As to why they would’ve been outside at that time, or what was so important to do in such weather I’ll never know.

Spoke to an ex lighthouse keeper on the Shetland Islands years ago? Over a few drams I asked him about this, he told me a “rogue wave” took them out to sea? He said he’s seen waves go OVER the top of his lighthouse on many occasion, I’ll go with that to be fair. Love the artwork, and atmosphere with these vids! Thankyou!

That’s a fine hypothesis and all, the only caveat being that there was no report of a storm or any terrible weather conditions that day (December 15th, the lighthouse keepers log even said that the “skies had finally cleared”). There is no way a sound ocean could produce waves sizable enough to sweep away three men.

@@dremndishot2695 Rogue waves don't need a storm to form. That's why they're called 'rogue'. No reason, just there. Could of been an under sea quake that started it, for that matter. According to the net, a rogue wave 100ft high snapped trees 1700ft up-slope. Imagine watching that?

OK... The three men were out repairing the storm damage. Suddenly a flying saucer lands, and out pop three aliens. At the same time, a sea monster appears, and a boat of eight phantoms rows up to the island. All 15 are taken by suprise when a freak swell breaks over the island, washing them out into the Atlantic never to be seen again.

As this was a newly built lighthouse, and the isle is uninhabited, it is not difficult to imagine that these men would not be familiar with the local surf. However experienced they were, every coastline is different and I think the notion that they were taken by surprise by a freak or rogue wave, as described toward the end of your video, is the most likely. I did a little google search on this and found out that one of the men had previously been fined five shillings for negligence after failing to secure supplies during a storm at another lighthouse. Perhaps he and another went to double check this when the storm began.
@Quandry1

The very nature of rogue waves are also such that they are impossible to predict so they can get even experienced individuals.
@jacobprice2579
@jacobprice2579 5 жыл бұрын
Quandry1 yes that’s very true. Wouldn’t even have to be a rogue wave. It is very easy to get caught out by the incoming tide and stranded. Even today there’s a half decent chance you’ll never be found if you get seeped out to sea without anyone noticing.

I hadn’t realized that the bits about the half-eaten food and journal entries regarding the men’s mental health had been embellishments! I’d heard this story from another channel before but the presenter included those bits of info in their retelling as if they were fact. I also hadn’t known about the extent of damage that the island and lighthouse suffered from the storm. Given those things I’m now convinced that it was a freak wave that swept all three men out to sea.

For what it's worth you must bear in mind that the lighthouse had only been there for about a year prior to the keepers disappearing, it takes a lot longer than that to familiarise yourself with the different sea conditions locally i.e how the tides affect the wave conditions at the landing places etc. At the west landing there is a gully about 50 yards deep to right of the landing, in heavy seas as well as hitting the landing directly they run up that gully and on reaching the end come straight back out and meet the next incoming wave and the whole lot inundates the landing. My theory is that two of the men were near that landing and one was caught by a wave and washed into the sea, his colleague ran up to the station to get help from the man left doing the daily chores, he dropped everything not bothering to get his oilskins and the two of them in trying to rescue the one in the water both got caught. You would really need to see the location for yourself to fully understand. Ultimately no one knows for sure so I might well be totally wrong.

@@ronireland7347 Occams razor suggests it probably is something like that, I mean its not as if they disappeared randomly from a perfectly safe area. It is entirely reasonable to surmise that they were washed away in a massive wave or something. Even then, I like to imagine they went nuts and succumb to deranged cannibalism and maybe minor necrophilia, you know something to pass the time.

Likely what happened is on December 15th, the date of the last log entry, there was probably a brief lull in the storms that allowed the men to venture outside, and two of the men went out to secure damaged equipment at the west end, while one was left behind to keep watch, and noticed another storm was building, and dashed out to warn his companions, locking the gate and door behind him, and reached the other two just as a series of massive waves struck the western dock and all three were killed when they they were pinned against the rocks by debris and the waves simply tore their bodies apart, or were swept out to sea where they were pulled under by their heavy clothing.

Three guys disappear from a cliff top island during a storm? Must be aliens.
@drakron
@drakron 5 жыл бұрын
Well what makes it strange is both the gate and door to the lighthouse being closed, it would be very unlikely that all 3 men would leave the lighthouse especially with one of then without his oilskin as well in the case of one being left in the lighthouse and leaving to rescue then from washed away and then be caught that is a possible cause (especially considering the overthrown chair) it still leaves the question why the door and gate was closed that is strange. Its not they disappeared, the official inquiry ruled they were likely sweep away but elements that stand out, why did one man leave without his oilskin? why the logbook entries are strange? I would personally believe that two men got out, one was sweep away by a wave with the man inside rushing out to help rescuing before they were also sweep away but then why someone that rushed out would close the door? Might not been aliens but then again, I also dont think it was as simple as what I mentioned.

This reminds me of the Minot's Ledge Light. The first tower got knocked down in a Noreaster in the 1840s and all three keepers died. One of them swam for a few miles in the storm and thought he made it to shore. He actually only got to another rock and died of exhaustian. He was the only body ever found.

I think: Two of the men went to repair damages on the boat landing and got swept away by a roque wave (actually not uncommon). The remaining man tried warning them but failed. Spending days alone in the dark winter coupled with survivor’s guilt, the remaining man committed suicide and jumped to his death making sure everything in the lighthouse was in check beforehand.

Just a note that "freak waves" were considered to be sailor's stories on par with mermaids until comparatively recently, when one hit an oil rig and was caught on "video" (well more of a series of stills). They're high and steep waves that ships go "through", rather than over, with disastrous results. Quite a few "mystery" sinkings can probably be attributed to them.

Same thing with the Giant Squid. There were several reportings of them out in the ocean but never any proof at all, until about 20 years ago. Not quite as big as the stories said, but with an eye the size of a basketball, you know its fucking huge.

The fact that the door was shut isn't that remarkable and can easily be explained.I've heard of people in other cases, even in extreme situations of life and death, where even seconds count, still closing doors behind them. It's just muscle memory and reflex.

I'm from the coast of Southwest Florida. And I have never heard of even the worst hurricanes or tornadoes doing the extreme damage described at the west landing. The iron railings twisted rocks that weigh a ton moved etc. And 200 feet above the Sea! That is not from any hurricane in my opinion. And I have seen category 5 hurricane weather. And are we even speaking of a hurricane? With ships out in the weather I doubt it was a hurricane. This is a strange story. But I don't believe they murdered each other. Rest In Peace to the three lighthouse men.

People have tried to embellish this tale over the years and make it akin to the Mary Celeste mystery, hence the stopped clocks and half-eaten meal....the meal part we know is false and in those days clocks stop if they're not wound or if the weights aren't repositioned. The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
@chriswicecarver3715
@chriswicecarver3715 5 жыл бұрын
The last explanation makes a lot of sense up...but is worth a couple of questions. If McArthur was inside and supposedly saw a freak wave coming...I don't know that he would have had time to run outside to warn his two compatriots. From times I have been at the beach...waves tend to roll in VERY fast. If you're up on a beach, and spot a wave...by the time you reach the water, not only will that wave be gone, but probably 5 or 10 more waves behind it. So, to speculate that McArthur notices the wave and then ran all the way out to the edge (close enough to be caught up in that same wave) he'd have to be running at Flash Gordon speed. It doesn't hold for me. Something more happened.

I'm thinking it might have been a tsunami? Tsunamis, other than Freak Waves, come in multiples, and not just one and then are done. And there is the extreme case that there could have been a second freak wave (though that would be an EXTREME stretch). And a tsunami should also have had more of a sign left behind, so, I really don't know. Though thinking on it, what kind of psychological effect would it have to see your mates carried away by a wave, or even just know that they couldn't have dodged the wave in time? Rational thought would be extremely difficult in such circumstances.

@karljohanlea5564
@karljohanlea5564 5 жыл бұрын
My guess. The two lighthouse keepers went down to the pier to fix the damage. The third keeper left to check on the other two. Since he wasn't in a hurry he closed the door and locked the gate. As the third keeper stood atop the cliff looking down at the other two the cliff gave way and he most likely fell into the water. In their rush to save him the other two also fell into the water and all three got swept away.

Two of the keepers had previously been fined for not stowing away gear properly and that must have weighed on their minds. Perhaps they went out in conditions that were marginal because of this and got swept off the island. When the third man went out to investigate their non reappearance the same happened to him or he slipped off a cliff, waves took him or he died trying to save the first two or they died trying to save him. It's only a mystery because non one knows or saw what happened.

I reckon the first two men were washed away in a storm and the third guy waited until daylight to go and look for them, hence why he locked the door/gate and didn't need his oilskin. And then he had a freak accident while searching the rock.
