I never liked the concept of a multiverse for 3 reasons: 1. It makes things way too confusing. 2. It expands the scope of the setting so much that the stuff we can focus on seems insignificant. 3. The existence of alternate Earths and alternate versions of yourself makes your actions and choices seem insignificant.

Of course they use the likes of Keaton to shill out for this dreadful steaming pile of turgid nonsense. The marketing departments long caught to the fact that modern fandom is more interested in 'brands' like Star Wars, Star Trek, Batman than actual movie craft. Take Star Wars and Indy. The original trilogy came at a particular time and place, and was a zeitgeist series of movies, coming shortly after Vietnam and the Oil Crisis, stagflation, social and political upheaval right as we enter the peak Cold War. People needed escapism, especially after a run of bleak movies like Soylent Green, All the Presidents Men, Klute, so Star War and Indy took film making back to the Golden Era of Hollywood. But, by the time we get to Jedi, while the idea of kids making there own movies with action figures is a nice one, we then get the Ewoks, and the birth of 'product' rather than art. Fast forward to the prequals and sequels, there is nothing but 'product', now cynically guised under a 'progressive' banner today. Sadly kids today don't have their Star Wars or Indy or Back to the Future because I am afraid to say that my generation, who saw Star Wars in 1977, never gave up their toys. Kids are now just the next on the conveyor belt of 'consumers'. Then we wander why young people are film illiterate, because today we need seven series of the same box set in order to have 'character development', or nihilistic about the world because there are no genuine hero's with few exceptions, male or female, anymore. When you have nothing to believe in, no stakes in society, and no virtue to uphold, you end up with the prolefeed we get, crooks like Trump, Biden, AOC and Sanders reaching the top, and cults like MAGA, BLM, ANTIFA or Proud Boys, who look and sound the same, at least to my ears dominating the social discourse.

Yes, but he’s also prone to bringing technology to big fights. I’m reminded of that moment in the justice league unlimited show where he just inexplicably has a bomb on the bat plane that can freeze hundreds of miles within absolute zero. His explanation is simply I had to freeze the Gotham river once. It’s one of the best Batman lines I can think of. There’s no precedent, that never happened in Batman, the animated series. It might’ve happened in one of the comic book titans, but it never happened on screen. But you very much by that at some point Batman had to freeze the entire Gotham river. Why? Probably the joker, maybe scarecrow, maybe something completely different, but the man had to freeze the river, and he had a bomb to do it. And then he made another bomb and kept it on the back plane just in case you needed to freeze something else. In modern society, being the strategist means having some really fun toys to play with. And Bruce Wayne can afford some pretty fun toys.

I liked him in Justice League. But the current movie has 2 problems: first is the actor’s off-screen behavior, which legitimately ought to be a factor in people’s decision whether to support the movie or not. Second, though, is the Zoidberg effect (Or the Dory effect or the Mater effect, if you prefer). There are secondary characters who don’t have a lot of lines, so most of them can be awesome one-liners. Then you slot them as the main character where they’re carrying most of the dialog… and suddenly they get really tedious. And on top of that, they made two of him for this movie. At least when Zoidberg got tedious it was just a 23 minute show. Dory and Mater ground on through full length movies.

They need Batman doing espionage while the gods are battling, it makes more sense. The way Batman works in this kind of scenario was epitomized in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. As you say, Batman can absolutely work in Justice League or team-up stories as a strategist and tactician. _Superman/Batman: Apocalypse_ is a based on a story from the Superman/Batman comic. There are tons of other stories in the comics that the movie writers can look at to see how to make Batman work in a setting outside Gotham. The DCEU doesn't just seem allergic to Darkseid; it seems allergic to adapting stories from the comics at all. It's stupid to have decades and decades worth of stories to take as inspiration and not use any of it.

What I did like is Supergirl wasn't like the Marvel/Disney toxic feminist type. She was her own character being a badass and the fact she's a woman at no point was the focus. In her interviews she mentioned when she met Henry Cavill she asks him "Did I make you proud?", talks about just playing a good character, living up to the standards set by the character and just doing a good job. Zero pandering to the woke. Just because of that I actually hope to see her continue the role and would like to see a Supergirl movie. Not to mention she looks goddamn beautiful in that suit and makes no attempt to hide the fact women have, certain features. If this was Marvel you'd already see "supergirls suit is too tight, outdated, it's objectifying women!"

Best use of Batman would have been as a strategist. Remember "Call it, Captain" from _Avengers?_ Steve gets everyone doing the best job for their abilities in about two seconds, amplifying everyone's effectiveness, letting everyone know there's a plan, and that plan can work. Batman is a tactical genius. He doesn't have to be the strongest because he can tell Supergirl, who IS the strongest but very inexperienced, exactly the right thing to do.

Assuming that Keaton has defeated big bads like Nam Ek before, I think a Batman who is well above 65 years old must have defeated Clay Face, Killer Croc, Bane and more. He has an idea as how to how to fight off a giant who is slow but strong. I feel like Ben Affleck's Batman would wipe the floor with Keaton's Batman in a hand to hand combat, even if both are of the same age considering just how much faster Batfleck is. He struggled against Parademons, well, they're fast, they're like those insects that just won't die and Batfleck still beat them. Batfleck was a nuisance to Doomsday and was fighting an army of Parademons alone while the League handled the stronger opponent.

What's funny about Barry Allen is that without having read about his comics and the few things I've seen about him (the Injustice games and Flashpoint Paradox), you expect an easy-going, chill, funny simple dude, that is clever and humble. A regular man equipped with a good mental, a sense of justice and principles, granted an awesome power that is the Speed Force. And it makes him a great figure. But it seems Warner can't see that and roll with it. He's probably one of the simpler heroes out there and they can't even do that.

Asked him about how his day was, asked about his meds, gently reminded them that they're in costume and that they needed to keep up with their meds, and just treated them as a mentally unwell individual with struggles while also getting the information that they wanted. I get the premise of that question, but I think it's rather reductive. I get that it's not *_literally_* just disable all the CGI and then play back the movie, would it still work, but there are some rather core parts of rather good movies that simply necessitate CGI. I mean go back to Iron Man 1, the scene where Tony is booting up the Mark 1, and fights off all of the terrorists with the improvised on-board weaponry, flamethrowers, etc. isn't just spectacle for spectacle - it holds real impactful weight for the narrative. I think the better wway of phrasing the test would probably be "if you took away everything except the CGI, how much worse would the movie be". If you took away everything except the spectacle from Iron Man 1, it's magnitudes worse. If you took away everything except the spectacle from the Avengers, it's magnitudes worse. If you took away everything except the spectacle from Civil War, it's magnitudes worse. On the other hand, If you took away everything non-CGI from The Flash, it floats around neutral, hell, it might even get better.

The big problem with multiverses is that nothing matters: every universe in which the heroes win is matched by one in which they lose, each permutation of wins & losses happens an infinite number of times, nothing can change the overall "balance". Dialing it back a bit, for a cinematic franchise it means nothing is fixed, no precedent or canon matters because any conflict or irregularity can be chocked up to a parallel timeline that happened to be identical except for Detail XYZ that the writers forgot about. Alternate timelines can be interesting if done right, but the right way is rarely the easy way.

Your comment strong reminds me of owlman. The alternate batman who wanted to wipe out everything coz nothing matters in the multiverse. I found a quote: Owlman : Every decision we make is meaningless because somewhere, on a parallel Earth, we have already made the opposite choice. We're nothing. Less than nothing.
@BiggieTrismegistus
@BiggieTrismegistus Жыл бұрын
DC's multiverse doesn't work like that. Their is a multiverse, yes, but the stories we're seeing take place in the Metaverse. It's the world that serves as the basis for the multiverse so change on it affects what happens in other universes. DC also has a local multiverse consisting of the Metaverse and 51 other universes. What happens on those worlds is _not_ random. People here are quoting Owlman saying nothing matters because of the multiverse. In the comics Owlman was delighted to find out that no matter what happens there's always an Owlman on Earth-3. He'll exist no matter what happens. Also, DC has always treated alternate timelines and alternate universes as different things...in the comics anyway. _Flashpoint_ was an alternate timeline story, not a multiverse story. For some reason the people who made this movie decided to smash both concepts together and it's needlessly confusing. If you use the mechanics from the comics going back in time in the Metaverse and changing something that alters the future, did just that: altered the future. It's not an alternate timeline, it's the new main timeline. As the metaverse is the basis for the local mutliverse those 51 worlds will change to match the new timeline but not in random ways. For example the aforementioned Earth-3 will always feature an evil version of the Justice League. Going back in time in the Metaverse and fixing what was changed resets the timeline (eliminating the alternate timeline) and the local multiverse follows. The Metaverse concept allows the writers to play with a multiverse while still allowing that universe to have stakes.

In all fairness, Keaton's Batman not having an arc is pretty par for the course. He didn't really grow or change at all in 89 or Returns, aside from having different love interests, but as a person, he experiences no real growth or change. Oddly enough, it was the first Schumacher Batman (Forever) that actually gave Batman any sort of ethos, and I think Batman's missing arc in Flash is only noticeable because we're now used to superheros having personal growth, where in the late 80s/early 90s that wasn't really expected.

And despite everything, and I don't honestly think The Flash was all the bad, (not great but not really terrible) it wouldn't make any sense for Keaton's Batman to have an arc, the entire point of his role in the film would've been completely ruined if he did have an arc. And even if this was really good, I don't think there is any manner for which Keaton's Batman would've made sense having an arc and not hurting the film.

There was simply neither need nor time for an arc. It would have also been quite annoying to have a a long build up for a character doomed to die who overall has had his life and wouldn't have cared to go back in action if not for that one thing. Not everything needs the standard arc and character developement, especially not Batman and even less in a Flash movie, where he IS a side character. You can only put so much into a ~2 hour movie and of course what you give one character you have to take away from another. If anyone fell short it's Supergirl, but even that was okay. It was a critical situation and they had to find this one weapon they needed to win - what failed. That the movie had the guts to go that route was actually interesting. Most movies would throw in a threat like an army of Kryptonians and then have it easily crushed, probably wil telling some stupid jokes - or an army of kids.

On the plus side, the film does send a clear message that this is it as far as these characters go. Keaton is done. Affleck's been suplanted by Clooney whoze universe, Ezra Miller included, is not getting revamped. Sasha Calle's been killed multiple times on screen in this film, just so the audience knows she's not coming back (Keaton died as many deaths, but his were mostly implied rather than shown). Warners also let us know that they had many itterations of past DC characters, going as far as to acknowledge Nicolas Cage as Superman (!) as if inferring they can always create new version, which is preferable in this case. As Keaton said, you mess with trying to correct the past and you get spaghetti.

The thing I just can’t understand about these super hero movies is that there’s a mountain of source material. There’s some really well written comics out there that they could virtually copy and paste onto the screen and even I would be ok with it as long as it was executed well. Batman would make an awesome strategist in some HQ in a major battle scene, especially the battles where the CG gets so muddy the commands he's shouting out are the only way anyone knows what's going on, and the ability to change his voice-overs in post-production could add a great deal of ... flexibility ... to a script that has to go through fifty or sixty rewrites before release. There is some love and care put into aspects of this movie: Michael Keaton's batman, for instance. It's the same costume in that he CANNOT move his neck from side to side. They don't play it up for laughs, but there's just one shot that's pretty blink-and-you'll-miss-it of him doing a full turn. It doesn't hide itself, and it feels like exactly the level of homage you'd expect. The movie is based heavily on flashpoint, obviously, but the plot point of Superman landing in Russia is actually a clever, subtle homage to one of the most popular DC elseworlds stories: Superman - Red Son. It feels like an homage, but also some added misdirection for people who know the story. It's an interesting way to keep people on their toes about what's being changed and what's not being changed. Even Keaton's return as an aging batman after hanging up the cowl in his old age feels like a reference to The Dark Knight Returns, arguably the most popular alternate universe story in a comic ever made. And that George Clooney gag at the end was actually really good. Really unexpected cameo that felt earned.

Clooney is present because Barry changed his dads court outcome by getting dad to look up toward the store camera by putting the tomatoes on the top shelf.
