This issue does actually get something right: A heat wave WOULD make crime in the city way, WAY worse. We have a lot of evidence and statistics that shows that heat waves and high temps make crime, both property and violent, go noticeably up Summer in New York City is especially notorious for this when roving brownouts fritz all the ACs

It's not even the only superhero story to do so. Both "Dark Knight Returns" and the Legends Of The Dark Knight storyline "Heat" feature a heatwave causing a crime spree. My guess is that since DC used to have their offices in New York for the longest time they simply wrote from experience.

I think Wally West is arguably the most developed character in the DC canon. We watch him advance from sidekick twerp to gangly teen to unwilling legacy hero to young adult to husband to father. He's allowed to be flawed and grow and change. And that is verboten in 21st century comics, because we need everything to reset to the status quo every five years. So Wally must be banished in perpetuity.

Waid's run on Flash (especially with Wieringo, but also Carlos Pacheco, Greg LaRocque, and all the other artists along the way) is some of my favorite comics of all time. Wally had grown a lot by this issue, but it was interesting to see him regress some due to the stress and the heat.

I have to disagree with you on the last part! I don't know if you have read the current Flash run by Jeremy Adams but it's been amazing so far with a heavy focus on Wally's fam. He might not be on any big teams right now (altough he will probably join the new iteration of Titans judging by the prev covers), but he plays a pretty big role in the current crisis and all and all is doing suprisingly good rn.

Always can count on Wieringo giving heroes the most chiseled chins you can get. Also lead into the trial which I loved for how distraught Wally was depicted over the event and spur of craziness he went on.

Well, if one remembers Wally's PREVIOUS Christmas, I could see why he'd be generally non-plussed. (Barry came back from the dead, but then turned on Wally, and then it turned out to not be Barry at all.) As a fairly grinchy fellow, this issue resonated well enough with me. Odds are it was plotted w/o the specific knowledge that it would be the issue released in December, and when it was discovered, it was altered.

Flash vol. 2, #73 might be the more thematically appropriate Flash Holiday Issue you're looking for. The time is closer to the Christmas special, someone does indeed learn a valuable lesson, and the crinal Santa in this issue is more reluctant and sympathetic!

I wouldn't be surprised if the Hawaiian shirt Santas were the original design and the higher ups pushed back wanting it more recognisably Christmas. Which is a shame when looking back on it, but probably was the right call at time of sale. I always like the more grounded depictions of heroes at the time. Hal Jordan walking through America trying to regain perspective, or Wally trying to find himself after Barry's death and then learning to be an adult. 90s comics get a bad rap, but that only works if you look at the extremes. There was a lot of solid, well told stories happening too. Where you could see yourself, even in the middle of spandex superhero fights.

This run is my safe place I became a man during this run and being on the spectrum I had something helped me understand what it meant to grow up and really helped me as I worked to mature as a person Wally provided me with a positive message that even when you screw up you can get better I mean you don’t get many examples of it may be Christmas and your not getting along but things can get better

But apparently it got better with the addition of more speedsters and the Speed Force concept. I say apparently, because I still haven't read much of it. I really wonder how often the Weather Wizard gets blamed for natural weather disasters that he had nothing to do with. He probably gets beaten up a lot. Also wonder if anyone's done a story where we get to see his opinion on climate change. Does he get blamed for that too? Or does his technology offer a fix, or at least a mitigation for its worst effects - or will that just make it worse in the long run? Has the government looked into that? This seems like the kind of thing Waller would be dealing with.

7:28 What if Wally West actually _was_ on cocaine, and all the Flash's adventures (his, anyway) were all hallucinations brought on by a bad case of amphetamine psychosis...? He just runs up to random people on the street wearing red PJs and yellow dish-gloves and gumboots and starts fights with them, shouting "I'm a superhero! I'M THE FLASH!!! I will stop you, Captain Cold!" until he comes down and has to go sleep it off in the cells (hence the various connections with the police force which he incorporates into his delusions).

Just remembered: There's a Judge Dredd christmas story that came out in June. Dredd is chasing a perp and the latter takes refuge in the apartment of two people who celebrate christmas every single day. No idea of the 2000ad issue number, but it's a nice little tale and worth a look

I Started reading Flash during Waid's run I think it was issue 70 when I got into it (It was a Flash and Green Lantern Team up fighting Hector Hammond and someone else I think). I think the 90s Flash TV series was still airing or had already aired and I get my first Flash Comic and who is this Wally West guy? Luckily a few issues later my question would be answered in the Return of Barry Allen story arc. But this issue was one that I definitely skipped. I was never into the holiday themed issues and just let this one pass by and waited for the next issue. After hearing your review of it definitely regret skipping this one.
