Jim Henson's Creature Shop has done an amazing job with the animatronics for the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, but there's one pretty big and deliberate tonal shift from the original game...

I previously felt it was ridiculous people were so mad about the red eyes, but now I’m not sure where I stand in the argument. One thing I do know my overall opinion is that I love how Jim Henson’s Creature Shop nailed the designs from game to reality. That was the only detail I really cared about. I’m not sure where I stand on the film rating, although I immediately can’t stand how kids have basically taken over the fandom. All I know is I’m determined to see this in theaters instead of on Peacock.

As an 18 year old who grew up with the fnaf games (and loved them for their horror elements) it pains me to think that this movie might just pander to kids who’ll piss themselves if something genuinely frightening happens. I think the best way to make the characters “scary” is not to make the intentionally scary. It’s more supposed to be disturbing. Which is scary? Someone jumping at you and scaring you for a second, or having someone stare from the darkness, not truly knowing if someone or something is there. Personally, that second one is terrifying

it's funny you bring that up, because something similar to that is done in the 1st game, mainly with freddy. freddy always hides in dark areas, or very far away from the cameras. the only indication he's there is the 2 white dots, which, when looking through a low quality camera, are very hard to spot. and if you aren't paying attention or don't know where to look, he could easily take you by surprise, by seemingly disappearing for a long period before reappearing much closer to your office. replace those white dots with these comedically over the top, glaringly obvious red eyes, and he can't sneak up on you. all of that surprise factor is gone.

I fully agree with you! The most scary part for me is the fact that the animatronics are essentially just shells being moved around by the spirits. Them being almost completely static from the waist up while walking is freaking terrifying! _And_ at the same time makes Springtrap's movements even more fitting, since he's the first "animatronic" to actually have a person moving inside, making the suit twitch and limp around.

It hurts because everything apart from the red eyes and making them expressive, everything else about their designs is dead on! I've never had the guts to play a FNAF game, but I follow the story and lore and while I wouldn't call it terrifying. There is a sense of dread, something being wrong and adult fear. I'd say these elements are when the series is at it's best, after FNAF 3 it sort of derailed. Turning the main four into "Hurr-Durr evil animatronics" kinda misses the point, at rate I might as well watch Willy's Wonderland or the Banana Splits movie. The true evil isn't the animatronics, it's Fazbear entainment, and William Afton aka Springtrap. The only EVIL animatronics we actually see in series are the Circus troop - made by Afton, Baby's possessed by his daughter, and the possessed Glamrocks in Security Breach.
@SomeBoiOnline
@SomeBoiOnline Жыл бұрын
That's spot on. If there's any "stupid campyness" in the franchise it's in the form of William Afton as the villain. The original animatronics were always just unsettling, as is their situation when you think about it.

You hit the nail on the head about the animatronics being turned into to characters. Because that's exactly what happened in security breach; the animatronics had personalities. I love how accurate the animatronics are, but you're right that the eyes play a big role in their scariness, so if they are done wrong, it ruins the whole purpose. Fnaf 1 is about the fear of the uncanny, not the fear of what is obviously evil. If they did tone the animatronics down because of the kids, then I find it quite silly since they're really just animatronics.

What people don’t understand is that we don’t hate the red eyes, we are just worried about what the red eyes entail. This is going to sound like a stretch, but if you are a die hard horror fan, you will understand what I’m saying. Red eyes in horror are so generic and “cheap”. They’re usually added in a movie as a poor attempt to scare the audience. Examples of this would be the Banana Splits and Chucky (2019) movies. I sincerely hope they don’t do something dumb like making the animatronics controlled by an evil AI. Also, add the fact that this will be a PG13 movie makes us even more worried because signs are starting to point that this will be a cash grab of a movie with no passion in it. This could very likely be a disappointing, corporate, soulless attempt to make money. The producers probably figured this movie will make money regardless of quality because it’s FNAF so it’s too big to fail. This means they just won’t add a lot of passion into it since it’ll succeed regardless. Again, I’m going to hold out hope that this movie will be faithful to the lore of the games because I’ve been a fan for so long, but I cannot deny the many red flags I’m noticing for this movie.

I agree with all your points about the horror. the whole point of fnaf was not "red eyes scary monster gnashing teeth", it was the uncanny subversion of these animatronics for children. the issue is that the *whole movie* has already been filmed. it's done. and it's probably hella expensive and hella difficult to edit the entire thing so there are no red eyes anywhere.

No pal, rewind. Folks, what are we even talking about? They can definitely do it without any problems and we should know it better than them. If they don't do it they're either making a very bad decision or just being tremendously lazy. I mean, isn't it a known fact that almost all fiction movies nowadays use lots of advanced CGI, tons of FX effects...? You all been living under a rock for the past 100 years or am I missing something? 😂 They just have to edit the characters' eyes in some scenes. That's it. Is that so difficult? They literally just need to add some crappy post-production effects. One single person (a fan) managed to do that in a very short period of time for the whole trailer and you're telling me they can't? There are no excuses. If we're getting the red eyes it's intentional.

ive been assuming the red eyes were chosen because they are more easily distinguishable from what already appears to be a pretty dark set. also it would make it easier for audience members to tell when the animatronics are possessed. personally i also think giving them facial expressions only makes them look sillier (akin to the banana splits slasher) in combination with the red eyes ultimately ive been waiting for this movie since i was a teenager so nothing as trivial as eyes is gonna keep me from it😅

To me, it’s all in the execution. I see a lot of people theorizing that the red eyes are significant because william afton has taken control of the animatronics to try and get Mike and Abby, and if red eyes were really the best choice to go with for the plot of the film then that’s fine by me, *but why on gods green fuck did they make the whole eye glow?* if they had just made the pupil alone glow then it would’ve looked much better imo. Not to mention that because the whole eye glows, it makes the animatronics facial expressions more apparent and noticeable which makes me take them less seriously.

Hopefully the red eyes won't be a big part of the movie and only show up in a few sections, cause this trailer does have a pretty uncanny moment, that being when the security guard pulls back the curtains on the stage, and we see the trio standing there motionless in the dark. It brings back a old fear i always had visiting the chuck cheese stage and being to to scared see what the animatronic did when it was not performing. While I personally didn't find the red eyes as a huge deal, I can definitely see how it can take away from the horror aspect of the film now and maybe even ruin the movie for some, so thank you for actually making your reason for hating them make sense lol.

I agree with you on all these points especially with how FNAF drew people, like myself, with some of the horror aspects and uncanny feel. I keep reading comments about the red eye’s indicating that the animatronics are “evil”, but how would black eye with a single white pupil in the middle staring ominously at you not do the same thing. Though I guess it would make sense if the movie kept the white eyes solely for Gold Freddy, that would be cool too. I personally just feel like the animatronics with red eyes are going to seem like the cliche, typical “oooh spooky red eyes!” thing. I mean, I’m still gonna see the movie and respect it because I love FNAF but this was just my own opinion about the eyes. Especially since this is a small trailer and a poster. (Awesome video btw! In my belief being part of the fnaf community since 2014, the eyes being read is a small detail with a big significance to the whole lore. I have read tweets, arguments and tiktoks about the animatronics being red eyed for the purple guy or the white eyes being possessed by the souls. Clearly if you played the games, the dots in the animatronics are part of the design. It's inside the endoskeleton's eyes and seeing the freddy jumpscare in fnaf 1, if you look through the frames, it is the shadow that covers the eye and makes the white dots glow. Foxy is another prime example as you see his jumpscare and in the cameras where his eyes always glow. Red eyes may be part of the lore however it takes place when afton wasn't incontrol of this pizzeria. I believe it was henry., however the eyes are not just eerie, it is canonically part of the design of these animatronics from the first game, and seeing as this is a teaser, maybe some changes could be made before the release of this movie.

Another thing that can be used against the red eyes is the fact that making the eyes red is like sending the message that the animatronics are evil. The animatronics, you know, the ones that have the spirits of children who were murdered. One of the things I like the most about the franchise is the fact that you start playing and view the animatronics as weird, demonic robots, but then it's revealed that they are actually victims, innocent children that were killed by the real monster that is William Afton, and all they want to be is free. And then they put the red eyes and it just fuCkING RUINS IT FOR ME-

This is spot on. You've put into words the thoughts that were nagging the back of my mind - this movie's tone is completely detached from FNaF 1, going by the animatronic designs, which are extremely important... I really, really want this movie to be good but I am afraid that we will be facing a worst-case-scenario where the art style draws from Security Breach rather than FNaF 1. That eerie, unsettling subtlety from the first FNaF game has never been recaptured, and while it was a very gradual progression away from horror, the franchise's tone and style is almost unrecognizable now - and this movie doesn't seem to be breaking that trend. Part of me hopes that this might be how I get back into current FNaF, but these red eyes are signalling danger - a different kind of danger, which I call disappointment. Lets watch the FNaF movie with an open mind and no expectations folks.

The robots, while looking cold and dead, felt unnaturally alive at times. Especially when they are staring directly at the cameras. It’s almost like they see you through the cameras. But even though the original fnaf didn't scare me as badly as P.T. i garnered so much respect for it in its use of animatronic designing. Infact, fnaf played into my exceeding love for horror because there was just something about it, while P.T. left me thirsting fnaf constantly came out with bangers that scared me one after another. Scott Cawthon's vision was vague and thats what made the game SO good. But, that doesn't translate well to a movie form, as alot of content in fnaf is supposed to be free to interpret. Movies can't really DO that, especially with the higher concern of ratings and also being able to affectively display a message or theme to an audience, meanwhile games DON'T have to do that to be successful. I REALLY hope they can edit the puppets before the release of this movie, I also hope they scrap the layout of the teaser where there is more than one animatronic actively pursuing the protagonist. There's less tensity when you're having to focus on two entities in a theatrical form, rather than a game form. I think this movie could've been started on the right track if it was made before the conceptualization of security breach so it'd have WAY more room to stretch its legs and genuinely get into the content the REAL fans wanna see.

I’ve seen people making fun of the red eyes and how it makes them look “high” I honestly don’t have a problem with it besides a personal preference, me preferring the “original” eyes then the eyes in the trailer but yeah I’m hyped for the movie and like what their heading with the movie. I guess it’s just a split between the fandom between the people who have grown up with the game series and the one who are ‘new’ to the game series. But you made a great point on this topic

I think he did the red eyes just for the miniature trailer, because he didn’t know how to implement the eerie aspect in such a sort timeframe, and will add the black eyes with glowing white pupils in the full release. I do agree with you though, the white pupils do look way better than the red eyes.

I am pretty new to the FNAF fandom, as I joined back when Security Breach came out but I have watched just about every lore video possible and am very familiar with the universe. The red eyes and the last shot of Freddy and Bonnie immediately struck me as weird. It's nice to hear my thoughts articulated so well. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "I'm so mad Scott and Blumhouse did this >:(" but it definitely was a creative choice I was not expecting.

My take is that if they arent vital to the plot like people have been saying sometimes, then they should go with dots or red dots like the silver eyes cover. If they do mean something, make them look less stoned, along with removing their goofy ass angry expression Hell even have them not express anything, might make them look spooky

I think the red eyes were deliberate. Scott Cawthon has so much love for the series that he made, and he is the one who wrote the script. We've known for a long time that Scott doesn't do things by accident. Whenever something is shown it is done deliberately. So the red eyes are possibly significant to the lore of the movie. We've only seen 2-3 shots where the red eyes are in. There could be more that look better, or that's the only place they appear in. We can't just assume the movie's gonna be shit because of a design choice. This could be a flashback where the suit weren't possessed yet and are being controlled. We just don't know. I and many many others have been waiting for this movie for 8 years. I'm just excited it's being made. (Apologies for the long comment)

If they did redo the animatronics in post, it would be a waste of the practical effects because it would be covered up with cgi

It's very disappointing to me the direction this franchise has gone, its to kid friendly, honestly all the fnaf vhs tapes are what fnaf should have been. like the story of fnaf and dead kids being stuffed into mascots is a terrifying concept. but i was small hope for ruin and hw2 but the movie im not sure anymore.

Also I'm not sure how much they have to do in order to implement this change but I would assume since it's just the eyes and they probably appear like this only in the scarier scenes about half way into the movie where it kicks off maybe just maybe they could still change and hopefully they do or have already but dang that age rating thing makes sense bur even then do parents Realllyyy care about your child being just a little under an age rating like dude they can't keep it red just for that reason like who cares if its a lil scarier. Chances are if they tell their parents to watch it they've already seen the scary game so it wouldn't even be that bad at all

So, I watched the video and I wanted to give my two cents on the matter. I do understand the complaints. They look more alive than usual, making it unfortunate for the fans drawn in for the horror aspect of the series. That being said... I still feel like people are overreacting. So far, we've only got a short teaser in which the animatronics appear only in a few instances. It's hard to draw a conclusion based on that shot with them alone. I think we should wait for a trailer and maybe some teasers as well to have a better look at them. But, everyone is criticizing only this part of the teaser and completely ignores the rest of the shots we have gotten. There are multiple shots in the trailer that convey an uncanny look for the animatronics (the cameras; when Mike is looking at them up close, etc.). Plus, based on the purple lights from the posters, I think it's fair to say that William is controlling the animatronics and there might be some shots when the animatronics are navigated by the ghosts of the children. It also might be a "secure a kill" mode like we have seen in Help Wanted when Baby's eyes turn red when she spots you. So it might not be a thing that will be there 100% of the time. I know I've entered some theorizing territory, but that's the thing. There are ways the red eyes can work, but we have to see more of them and then draw a conclusion. I understand the white dots idea looking creepier, but people forget that, after FNAF 1, Scott only gave that look to animatronics that he intends to be more mysterious and lore-heavy. I think he wants to keep the white dots for Golden Freddy in the movie. I would also want to address the whole goofy FNAF thing. Although FNAF is fundamentally a horror game, it never takes itself fully seriously and you can simply realize that by the sheer amount of puns like "Eggs Benedict" or "Acting quirky". Not to mention some mechanics like Ballon Boy stealing your flashlight batteries. FNAF is dark yes! But there has always been a goofy and lighthearted side to it as well. Kane Carter, the developer behind Popgoes Evergreen which is an upcoming game in the Fanverse Initiative, has said that himself during the time when that overly violent Security Breach reimagining was popular. PG-13 horror exists and there have been great PG-13 horror movies. And FNAF is not that intense in horror for a younger audience to enjoy. Yes, there's the uncanny valley that kinda loses its initial effect during gameplay when you only just look to see who is where, but the gore aspect is always eighter presented in pixels and actual gorry shots are on screen for a second. I know, PG-13 has been different for a few years, but there's nothing in the games that shouldn't pass without a PG-13 rating.
@SomeBoiOnline
@SomeBoiOnline Жыл бұрын
Some good points made, there could very well be some reasoning behind the eyes in the film which would be great to see. I agree regarding the "gore" too; although implied through 8-bit scenes in the games, it was never a big part of the scare factor. It's definitely possible to make a good horror movie with that rating, it's just the initial implications that were concerning. I do hope you're right, though.

@@SomeBoiOnline Thanks for the response! I think the red eyes give some sort of SF vibe. Scott will probably try to appeal to both sides of the fandom that are here because of the horror and the one that is here for the SF elements. I'm writing here some ideas of how some iconic scenes can be executed and still get a PG-13 rating (just to show you that it can be done): The Bite of '83 can be simple. Just film the part when Evan is put in the suit, show him how he struggles to get out and show some malfunctions inside Fredbear that can indicate his jaw is about to collapse. The film only the upper side of the head and how it suddenly lowers itself really fast, without showing Evan's head. Then silence... only show the bully's reactions, and show the body just hanging with no reaction (note: not with the head inside the mouth, but a bit lower). You can even a drop of blood poring on the suit to sell the idea. The general idea is that the shock was delivered and it was implied how it happened. The Springlock Failure would be more complicated, but I have two ideas: 1) Show how the suit implodes with William inside it which will imply that William is crushed inside and you only need the actor to scream to prove that further. The problem is that the design of Springtrap might suffer and it will look inaccurate. 2) Fill the room with endoskeletons in suit mode (the mode that allows the user to wear it as a suit) and show how they implode when William wears the Springbonnie suit. The actor will only have to scream and the endos imploding will serve as a reference to what happens to William. The Scoper room can have just the setup showing what is about to happen to Michael (the scooper gets positioned at the level of his belly) and then show the scooper suddenly rushing towards Michael and cutting to Michael's expression before it reaches his body. It will also help if we can see how the scooper is used to remove endoskeletons from the animatronics so we can have a reference for that scene (A mechanical being getting destroyed is not the same as watching a human getting mutilated. That's why the Transformers Prime show got away with a lot of violent stuff). Elizabeth's death will just need to show how she gets inside Baby and only sees the scooper getting inside Baby's belly cavity. As for William killing kids, you can just see William getting the kids in a room with him and then showing him how he exits with a knife.

I don’t understand what’s so hard to understand. They should be making the movie for the true fans that’s been there from the beginning not the five year olds. And this movie needs to be 18+ because half the fucking premise of these games is a crazy man, murdering kids and stuffing them in animatronics. There is no way they could do that for a PG-13 rating, and not being satisfying.

we also need to realize that this is meant for the entire market, people who don't know fnaf need to watch these movies too to make money. So i can understand them making the decision to make the eyes red so that people can know they're "evil." But as a fnaf fan since early 2015 i agree with everything you said. Especially with the whole, "kids being attracted to the animatronics not the horror part." I think this is pretty clear with the kind of stuff you see if you searched "fnaf" on platforms like tik tok around the year of 2019 where most of it was just 'humanoid, animated,' I guess you could say, "cringey" cosplays of the characters (not saying that was bad or anything just saying that it showed their attraction to the animatronics opposed to the actual horror). I do think they should have made the eyes black and white opposed to the red as in my opinion there was a chance that it could have opened the eyes of the public and showed them that not all pg 13 horror needs to be just the classic angry red eyes, upset face, sharp teeth. cool video.

I think the red eyes are just presented wrong. It does make them look a little goofy. I wish that people wouldn’t make up rumors about how people who don’t like the red eyes are delaying the film for another year. Like jeez, sorry, we just don’t like it. That’s all! Also whenever people just express their dislike people go like “Well it’s in the books/help wanted” yeah, but those eyes are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the trailer. In the books, they have empty sockets with the tiny red pupils, and in help wanted, Freddy’s eye sockets are empty with just a bright red glow. No eye is there to be lit up. But it’s not like it ruins the whole design. Besides the red eyes and the weird expressions, the animatronics designs are EXACTLY like they are from the game, and that’s AMAZING!
