yeah and some of them make more sense in multiplayer RP. for example New Zealand and Australia might stay democratic and form a faction, and focus on liberating colonies or something. But I have to say that in singleplayer focuses like the New Zealand independence focus are just outright dumb

When you played communist china, it reminded me how salty I was on Waking the Tiger's release about how Germany got a more detailed focus tree in the expansion that was supposed to focus on Asia. Each Chinese major has a single branch in terms of governance (Nationalist going democratic, Communist China choosing its flavor of socialism, and Manchukuo choosing if it's going to be the big spoon or the little spoon with Japan) If I recall correctly the democratic leader for nationalist china STILL has a generic guy. There aren't even any election events if you do go full democratic as nationalist China if my memory serves me correctly.

It's not usable today in its original meaning of course (Manchurians and Hui aren't really distinct from Han Chinese anymore), and the Japanese ruined it by having their puppet regimes use it during WW2, but there wasn't anything wrong with the original design. As for the devs' decision, that seems fair considering how messed up China was in the 1930s and 40s.

Japan has always had support for communism, but in the imperial period (after the Meiji Restoration) it was just repressed really hard because it was incompatible with the weird little nationalist imperial cult they were setting up. Japan actually struggled quite a bit with communist movements in the 1920's and early 30's.

My first game with Hoi4 was forming Communist Hungary. I got crushed by Germans 1 year later. In 1946 I was liberated by the soviets, and the game was lagging so much at that time, so I finished it. It was so much fun
