The Folding Fan ( Original title : Suehirogari ) Story
The extremely wealthy master wants to give suehirogari to his guests coming at New Year, and he sends his servant Taroukaja on an errand to buy some. However, Taroukaja doesn’t really know what suehirogari are. He only asks the master what sort he likes, and then heads into the city. The master likes ones with “good paper, properly polished sticks, sturdy handles, and stylish pictures.” When Taroukaja arrives in the city he’s grabbed by a glib swindler. He is tricked into spending a large sum of money on an old umbrella that perfectly meets the master’s specifications and he heads home. A suehirogari is a folding fan. The master, furious that Taroukaja has mistakenly bought an umbrella and not a folding fan, kicks him out of the house. Taroukaja is at a loss, but then he remembers the song for putting people in good moods that the swindler taught him. It’s his last hope and he starts singing, but will it actually cheer his master up…?
