On this week's episode of RYGTBKM, the Ford F-150 Lightning depreciates to a ridiculous degree; the Jeep Gladiator is STUPIDLY overpriced; and dealers continue to hold their predatory "Upside Down/Payoff Sales Events" for people underwater on their car loans.

That's the problem with government intrusion into markets. They pushed the EV market with their agenda. The market did not want this. However, since they pushed for this nonsense, government bureaucrats may have to bail out the manufacturers which, in turn, means the tax payer will have to pay for this bill. Unfortunately, no one, including consumers are willing to see a major part of the economy fail. Especially government because it clearly shows how inept they are. What's even worse is that not witnessing a severe economic downturn doesn't teach manufacturers or the populace on why government intrusion into markets is madness. Economics is incredibly complex due to its stochastic nature. Carelessly, politicians haven't learned this and will never learn this. Capitalism is about having winners and losers. The losing part is just as important as the winning part because it teaches you what not to do. A great example is how Toyota has done the research and proven EV's are not the way to go. They're far more destructive to environment and are higher in energy costs. To be clear, government does have function. But it is certainly almost always wrong at wanting to predict economic goals.

OK I bought my Lightning XLT SR a little over a year ago for 49K after the incentives and govt rebate. It has an 8 year battery warranty by Ford. I use it on my farm and I never take long trips in it nor do I ever intend to. It is the best riding most useful truck I have ever owned, and as a side note its super quick. I simply could not afford a new gas truck at the time for 70K to get a similar feature set. So if the truck is completely dead at 8 years it will have cost me around 6K per year to own. Oh and did I mention that it gets around 70mpg equivalent when charged on the farm @ 13 cents per kwh? Oh and there is the use of the 7.2KW power from the truck to run my 240v welder that I forgot to mention as well.

EXACTLY. Here is a very sobering statistic of the modern CEO and their “beacons of leadership”. According to the Wall Street Journal, nearly 70% of all corporate acquisitions since 1990 have failed to meet their benchmarks for which they were purchased. To put this another way, a monkey flipping a coin gets it right more than these guys….buy a huge margin. Most corporations and their shareholders would be better off with much less “leadership”. It has been to the dealer at least 7-8 times for repairs and is worth something like $40,000 CDN today. That is a $100,000 CDN depreciation in a little over 2 years. I wanted to buy a new truck back in early 2023, but Ray and Zach keep saying, wait it out they will come down, be patience. So, 2 weeks ago the Ram dealer in my area, Northern Alberta, Canada listed most of the base model 2023 Ram 1500's 25% off MRSP. I ended up buying a new 2023 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Express listed at 67,150 for 51,300 cdn. ( or 49,580 down to 37,873 US dollars). It was 25% off of MSRP and it wasn't a fully loaded pickup but it was what I was looking for. Thanks you guys, I did listen to your advice and I think I did really good waiting for this deal. My guess is most people trading in that soon weren't prepared for EV ownership, so the dealers can take them to the cleaners on the trade. This isn't an apples to apples situation. This is a complete fuel system switch, and unfortunately the lack of education across the spectrum (buyers, dealers, manufacturers, etc) makes it difficult to make an educated decision on the purchase. Results in people switching to EVs without being prepared, getting a sour taste, then trading in on a low just to get out of it. Just for the relative interest, CarGurus in my area are selling used F150 Lighting Platinums for $65k, so they're making a roughly $25k markup on that truck. 30% depreciation is still a beating, but it's mainly fleecing the seller trying to back out of their transition.

Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum: $91,995. 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning: $54,995. Used price for the Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum according to you: $39,200. It seems to me that the problem is with the upcharge on the Platinum name. Drive new off the lot and face the depreciation values. At least the manufacturer isn't Boeing. The assisted steering would force you off the road. The doors would fall off because it's missing bolts. Past production people would refuse to carpool with you unless you were driving a model that came off the line prior to 1991. And the management facilities would relocate to Mars because they were too close to the manufacturing plant because they can get sucked-in to the problems with their actual manufacturing facility.

I have used this tactic plenty of times over the past 3 years to gauge the actual value of a car for sale. However, I think we are now at a point where dealers really don't want anymore inventory unless they can steal a vehicle from a desperate customer in which case they will take on another used vehicle. It's like trying to buy a foreclosed house. The bank isn't going to simply take the highest offer at a foreclosure sale/auction unless it meets what they want to get out of the property. I think if you are trading in on a vehicle they stand to profit from in the deal, then you may get an offer just slightly below the actual used retail value.

I’d be curious what the results would be with a Lightning pro. When you have a single model that is priced from $40-96k with arguably minor changes between models, it’s not surprising that a top spec would be worth little more than entry level, during times of price sensitivity.

I'd argue that a brand new ram classic is one of the more reliable brand new trucks you can buy. No turbos. No hybrid complexity. They arent overloaded with "features". They've had 15 years to iron out the kinks on that platform. Both the 3.6 and 5.7 are fairly reliable. And the ZF 8 speed is an excellent transmission.

Nobody making IC cars ever cut new car prices like EV makers are doing. Because they can't. For some reason lower cost to consumer is being spun as a bad thing! This is excellent.

The used car offer seems fair. The problem is not the offer the problem is the MSRP. This truck should have a MSRP of about 55-60K...not the 95K Ford wants for it.

Visited a jeep Dealer here in SE PA yesterday. I didn't see any sign of any large discounts on new Jeeps. The new Jeeps still had the markup stickers on them. The used Jeeps had discount stickers, though.

@@eclipseusa1 Ford made less than 28K 2nd generation lightnings (1999 to 2004) . Ford made more than 24K 2023 lightnings. Do you see the problem with comparing these? So while I agree it is not making the point you intended. I was thinking the old 2nd gen lightnings would be worth more. But much of the value on these old trucks is condition.

Just wanted to add an update for central-ish Texans. Alan Samuels Dodge in an town that rhymes with Zaco ( there was a little dust up btwx the fbi and a “cult” a few years ago) just tried to sell me a truck for 33k, while I had my car there to be serviced. No deal on the truck, their sales efforts were minimal at best. They tried to 4 square me. After I told them no, I later got a bid from them to fix my car. The bid is hilarious. To replace my transmission ( a re-manufactured one, not new) they wanted 19k. For replacing my belt tensioner and water pump they want 2k. It’s great to see the Apple sales model at work. “Oh to replace the broken part on your phone/car, will be almost as much as a new one, we are so glad for your patronage. Have a nice day, come back real soon and see us”. Suffice to say, I will never do any business with either Apple or Alan Samuels!

I agree. But that’s because I travel long distances and live in a huge state, and because I don’t want to be stuck at a charger, and because I have trailers. If you live in a dense urban situation and can charge at home EVs might make sense… until the batteries have to be replaced or you have to pay insurance 😂
