My father was a salesman for a Chrysler dealer back in 1985 when the Laser came out, and he brought a loaded one home once to try out. I was 12 and obsessed with Knight Rider, and here he comes with this black talking car with a digital dashboard. He got real tired of me begging him to keep it.

Were you successful in getting him to keep it? My dad was a real prick when it came to stuff like that. When I was a kid he got a '71 or '72 corvette stingray, put a new engine in (did keep the old block) and we'd drive through the mountains in it. A few years later I started college and that son of a bitch (may you rest in peace grandmother) asked me if I wanted the corvette. Obviously I said yes but pointed out that I couldn't keep it on campus. A week or two later he calls and says you didn't really want the corvette did you? Then he goes on to tell me his brother bought it off of him who then later sold it to my cousin. He's done stuff like that with a lot of things, the corvette, a sweet ass wood planer, a kubota backhoe, and some family guns. I learned then that my dad was a lying asshole and in general just not a really good person. It seems maybe he wanted money for those things but he could have said so and I'd have paid for them if I was able. Now flash forward to present and those corvettes are expensive as all hell. If I had a mean bone in my body, I'd wait until he needs put in a nursing home (which I'm against) and say you didn't really want to stay at home with expensive in home health care did you? Awe shuckeez, I spent your senior citizen care fund on some guns, a corvette and a tractor. lol.

One day my father and I went to the nearby Chrysler dealership and we test drove one of these. Exactly the same as this but had CD player and electric windows. Anyways dad bought it and told me to follow him home with his car. (the one we came in). Got home and went to give him his keys back and he said kepp them they're yours. A white 90' VNT Shelby Daytona. This brought back memories I forgot like the signal light control. Lot of other memories too. Thanks for that.

That particular engine there had forged internals. You could throw upwards of 25 psi of boost at that engine. If you know how to with on engines. You could take it apart and gap the rings. Easily squeeze 600hp out of that engine with the right turbo and intercooler.

I must say, the subjects of the last few videos have been spectacular! This IROC is a forgotten piece that was quite cool given it’s lotus connection. Then we had the Morgan which is an obscure but magnificent piece of automotive history. Then there was the Porsche Cayman, while not rare, was still a stellar example of the breed. All in all, a really nice, eclectic group of machines. Thanks for bringing them to us, Bill!

It was the spring of 1994. I was 19 years old and got wind of a 1992 Daytona IROC R/T for sale at a dealership about an hour away. Even at that time, they were kind of a mythic car that you heard about but never saw. I went to go check it out. Bright red, with gray leather interior.....and most importantly, that bright red turbo engine under the hood. I took it for a test drive with a salesman. When I opened it up on the highway I remember him warning me about spots where cops were known to hide. I remember the payment was $350+ per month, which was a little high, but I could swing it. The cost of insurance was what killed the deal for me. Apparently a 19 year old with lots of speeding tickets in a turbo Daytona was a high risk proposition for Nationwide. It's probably a good thing I never got the car. I probably would have either killed myself, or drove the car into the ground trying. 😅

I remember this car well in 92 and 93. IROC R/T and the Spirit R/T with the 224 HP DOHC Turbo. So nice. Toronto had billboards all over the city in 92 of IROC R/T's when this version came out. This version was so fast. Also design was pure 928 greenhouse not the 944. As for the. GLH you could get turbo. The GLHS is the last 500 GLH that Shelby bought and tweeked some more. Did the same with Charger GLH S. Love this car though.

Look at the bright side of your heat, Bill: You won't deal with as many "snowflakes" as we do in the Seattle area☺
@olikat83 жыл бұрын
Thing about these and the Spirit R/T is the heads...like the 2.2L "Maserati," 16V- headed motor from the Chrysler TC by Maserati, Lotus built the cylinder heads. "Look for coolant leaks & cracks." Funny thing? The Daytona floor pan is the same one used for the TC, not the LeBaron as commonly mistaken. We always called the wheels "Salad Shooter" attachment wheels. The later Shelby Daytona cars (not the 1st gens) were also the originator of the "Variable vane" turbocharger to combat turbo lag.

I had the 1985 Chrysler Laser 5 sp with the 2.2 Turbo, it really moved. I bet it was more than the 140 HP rating. Gold with the sand interior, tinted windows clear aftermarket headlamp covers made it aero looking. It was a sleeper.

The official rating was 145 hp, later revisions took it to 175.

Beautiful car that has a body style that aged well. Too bad we don't have a comparable sleek new 2 door hatchback available today. My brother bought new a while 1990 Shelby Daytona with the rare VNT turbo. He was very pleased with it except that there were no perfornance mods available for the VNT. The car delivered excellent highway gas mileage, and the equal length half shafts limited torque steer. Was really disappointing that the Avenger replacing the Daytona had no performance versions.

Nice job! I really liked the looks of those cars, especially the 85 Shelby Daytona which I took for a test drive once. I could not afford it at the time. My first new car was a dark red 87 Chrysler LeBaron with a 5 speed and crank windows. Not a fast car, but decent little car with hidden headlights, and it was great on gas.

I used to sneak out My Dad's IROC R/T in the middle of the night, we & beat souped Civics, Type R's, 5.0 Mustangs (across the intersection) even a 911 S.C. A Mechanic friend purchased the Mopar Direct Connection kit that would convert this Daytona to a re6ar wheel drive that would fit the 5.9l commando crate motor. This complete kit included over 100 pieces and promised a 200 m.p.h. top speed, I know that the rear subframe assemblies were installed, transmission tunnel was complete. Unfortunately he perished in a Volare with a 440-6.....I am determined to find it someday. Thanks for the memories.

Great video!! I remember seeing only one if these ever with my own two eyes. And I live in car crazy Southern California. In the 80s and 90s, I was a Mustang guy, having owned 4 of them. However, I always liked the look of the four headlight Daytona Z. I also remember reading about the one off V8 Daytona in one of the magazines. Further, I also remember reading that Carroll Shelby was angry when he learned that Chrysler went with Lotus for the 16 valve head because he could have done it for much less money.
