the forgotten art of monotasking - an antidote for a stressed world
Obviously monotasking isn’t a completely lost art in our modern world - many of us do single tasks throughout the day - but it is easier than ever to feed an ever growing craving for multi-tasking and efficiency, and this isn’t a bad thing at all! I only want to share a simple way I destress and unwind when I need it, and it is as simple as mindfully doing one thing at a time, breaking activities into simple steps that seem more doable than taking on the day as whole and overloading myself. Perhaps I’m not as productive sometimes, maybe by some standards I am wasting time, but it feeds my soul in a way that is hard to expain, as if this focused, methodical pace is what I needed all along.

There is nothing wrong with doing many things at a time or speeding through tasks, I myself do that often - I only want to share a simple way I destress and unwind when I need it, and it is as simple as mindfully doing one thing at a time, breaking activities into simple steps that seem more doable than taking on the day as whole and overloading myself. Perhaps I’m not as productive sometimes, maybe by some standards I am wasting time, but it feeds my soul in a way that is hard to expain, as if this focused, methodical pace is what I needed all along. I notice if I go day after day always seeking entertainment it can make me struggle to focus and unwind, but maybe that doesn’t apply to you! I don’t know, I just like to find what works for me and might provoke some thoughts ❤ sending much love

Thank you for your video and vulnerability. I have been seeing a wonderful therapist for over a year now for my PTSD. A symptom of my PTSD is over tasking myself into exhaustion so I don't have to think about my trauma. I now have skills to process my trauma and not run from it. It's a gift to be able to sit quietly and enjoy something for me. Yesterday, I sat on the soft grass with the cold sprinkler on me playing/digging in soft mud, making a spot for some brick edging in my flower bed. It didn't feel like work. I felt alive and happy enjoying the experience. Just the mud, the water, the bricks, the sun, and my digging tool. I wish that kind of peace and happiness for everyone who watches your beautiful channel. 😊

This topic is exactly what I am trying to work on these days. One side effect from always distracting myself while working (phone, music) or watching a movie while cooking etc is that I have a harder time remembering things. Thank you so much for these words of encouragement that by a weird serendipity kind of phenomenon resonate so much right now. Sending love from Switzerland 🧡

To confront silence is to confront yourself. Monotasking invites silence, which is why many are afraid of it, they are simply afraid of the truth of themselves. A valuable lesson for every human to learn from

As someone who grew up before social media and cellphones, I find it pretty easy to monotask. It depends on what I'm doing, but I can easily go all day without looking at my phone or computer. When I was in high school and just after, I could read for hours and get so lost in a book that the world around me would disappear. I've recently been getting back into reading and it's been wonderful to get lost in a book again. I also crochet a LOT, but I tend to watch videos like this one while I'm crocheting..;) When it's not insanely hot outside I like to sit out in the back yard and work on my crocheting or art. Every weekend I do my best to stay off social media. It's much better for my mental health and I realize that I'm much happier. I don't need to know what everyone else is doing.

I'm easily overwhelmed so dividing tasks is what works for me. One day I will clean the toilets. Next day, the sinks. Next day, the floors. This has made a tremendous difference in my life. I'm more relaxed and have more time to enjoy the things I love.

I was inspired recently by Thich Nhat Hahn to try and eat just one meal (breakfast) in silence with no phone or anything playing. Just me and the food - appreciating it and where it came from. It feels really unnatural, but then after a while it feels right. It’s only ten minutes. When I worked in the corporate world, a lot of people bragged about their ability to multi-task, and while it can be useful at times, it’s often very stressful and leads to mistakes. I also find I’m most productive doing one thing at a time with all my focus.

As a kid, I always enjoyed riding in the back seat of a car, not speaking to anyone, and watching the world go by. Rarely, there was no music, and once in a blue moon there was complete silence in the car, just long stretches of road, pretty trees in passing, and the tune of the wheels rolling against the asphalt.

Modern structures of cities, higher level education and expectations, digital life has taken away from soothing our souls and people creating warm homes instead of flavour of the month styles, growing our food, crafting and building and helping neighbours. I grew up in a small prairie town in Canada where most had vegetable gardens, helped out neighbours building small back yard patios, sheds, fences, shared garden produce and baked goods. So normal then and now that I am in the city I long for the quiet and neighbourly days. So much is amiss but we have to reclaim our connection to simple and useful ways as our little Cottage Fairy shows us weekly🧚

I find that monotasking prevents me from becoming overwhelmed. When I'm overwhelmed I get less done because I can't decide what to start with so I just don't start anything. When there's multiple tasks that needs to be done it's far better for me to prioritize them, complete them one at a time and I make far better progress. I prefer quiet while doing my tasks, noise makes me distracted and edgy, so no TV or music in the background for me. The beauty of life is that we're all different and one size doesn't fit all, so find what works for you 🙏

I just recently found your channel and just now found this video but I was literally journaling about this very thing this afternoon… during my childhood and college years- where I did not have a laptop or email, and phones were tied to the wall 🫣, I was very content to sit in a room without TV… ride in a car just looking out the window… sit in a tree and just notice the bark… wash dishes and play with the suds… all these years later I have now become devoted to uni-tasking again and being fully aware and present in my task.

This has definitely shown to be helpful for me. Since my recent surgery, I’ve been slowing down. Typically I am someone who would listen to music in the background but my surgery was an ear surgery and so sound just weren’t doing it for me. I would find much discomfort around the idea of sitting down to paint… but every time I do, I get lost in it and find myself feeling more at ease, more at peace. I guess the surgery sort of pushed me into mono-tasking and now this video helps me see why I have felt resistance towards sitting down and getting started. I kept craving more stimulation until I just surrendered into the silence of one project, one point of focus. It has been like medicine.

When I was working as a teacher, I spent the hours after dinner correcting papers and making plans. I found that I could have the TV on and keep up with whatever was going on there along with my papers duties. In fact, when I felt like I really had to 'focus' on my work I would turn the TV off. Often, I would fall asleep in my chair covered in papers when that happened. That background 'noise' was apparently what I needed to keep my focus. Even now, I have the TV on as I'm typing this. Even without watching, I can keep track of story lines while my visual focus in on my computer screen. This probably isn't the best scenario, but it works for me. Thanks for another wonderful video!!

Thank you so much for being so open, authentic and vulnerable, and sharing your old soul wisdom with all of us. I am healing from complex PTSD and anxiety disorders and am preparing to return to a toxic, dysfunctional workplace filled with bullying, micromanaging and controlling behaviours this fall. I am grateful for the trauma and occupational therapy I've been gifted with to prepare myself mentally and emotionally for my return to a toxic productivity mentality culture that values power, greed, status, speed and multi-tasking no matter what the cost (high employee stress, overwhelm and burnout, high staff turnover rates and long-term, severe health impacts). I needed to hear your message today to remind myself that single-tasking while still being goal oriented is ok, and evidence based for psychological and physical health benefits. I am grateful to you for being an integral part of my therapeutic journey, and sharing your highly sensitive soul with us (I have sensory processing sensitivity too).

I monotask with most things i do nowadays: I walk everywhere instead of biking to get there faster and don't need to listen to music while I'm walking because I can focus completely on my surroundings, and that has become (through practice) interesting and entertaining enough; I don't watch videos or movies while I'm eating my meals, because I just want to enjoy my food; I try to be present for every conversation I have and not be distracted by more interesting things; it helps me write for long, uninterrupted streaks; etc. It's a conscious choice, but also something I tend towards naturally because I find that my mind is a lot clearer, and I can focus and understand difficult concepts to a depth I can't get to when I'm constantly distracted by other tasks. It allows me to think more deeply and be okay with myself, since I'm only accepting influence from things I choose to be influenced by, instead of having to constantly be entertained by whatever looks attractive in the moment. I'm also an anxious person, and experienced a series of panic attacks recently, so intentionally monotasking has really helped me slow down and realize I don't need to do everything with so much urgency---your own life moves at your own pace, if you let it. Sorry this is so long, Paola seems to come out with something I've been thinking about in particular every week.

This is why I’m trying to learn, it’s such a blessing this video came on my recommendations on KZbin as it is perfect! I can’t do anything without music in the background, even as a kid so that’s probably something I won’t be able to do without. Im learning to do without by doing cleaning houses (my side gig) in silence and it’s helped so much. I just want to learn to take on one thing at a time, to stop trying to take everything on all at the same time like I always do or swap between them all multiple times.

For decades I was trying to do everything for everyone and putting myself last. One of the things I am trying to do is take time for me to do the things that bring me happiness without interruption. That is not an easy task but I am finding ways to do so. I make an appointment with myself. I put it on the calendar and that is my task for the moments or hours or days I need or want to use. I don't feel the guilt I used to feel. It sounds strange but in our world of "Hurry Hurry" I find this might just be what works for me. I try not to rush around and just enjoy the "One thing at a time process". Thank you for this video. It is a very good example of what we could be doing to benefit our mental and physical selves.

Hello there, I love your videos, it gives me a new way to think, a new perspective. Especially, this one. For the past days , I have been thinking about this topic and I am so grateful youtube suggested me this video. As if something is saying to me what I am thinking is correct. I was once so mindful that I enjoyed monotasking . But technology regained it's power over me. But now it's time for me to enjoy what i am missing: the silence, the peace, the mindfulness. I am not a person who make an effort to type these type of long essays in comment section. But your videos are so great. It is art. Continue doing what you are doing. We are so grateful for your videos. Don't know , if you will notice. But , Thank you 💕

I too as an introvert enjoy time to myself to read to craft to just take care of plants when I have my time I believe I enjoy just sitting and listening to the wind watching the birds and squirrels embracing nature is what I enjoy the most! In the world of technology you have to make the decision to make time for yourself away from the always “on” button !🌺🌼🌻

Thank you for this video. I am currently on fmla for 2 weeks due to health issues. I have been teaching for 19 years and am constantly multitasking to the point that the stress has caused physical ailments. I don't think I will go back to teaching after this year. I have always felt the stress of being responsible for so many young souls. There is just too much input many days. I am trying to slow down and monotasking sounds like a wonderful idea to start! Thank you again.

I went out bat detectoring the other night. It was with a conservation group to record data on their calls. We split up to do the survey and it was just me, the device and the bats, no phones, no social media for an hour and a half. It was very tempting to reach for my phone but I resisted. It was amazing. Nature had such a good affect on me and I felt so calm, down to my soul.

I live in the mountains of PR and after hurricane Maria we had no power for 5 months. It didn’t take long to get into a pleasant and calm rhythm of just dealing with the basics of life. We often woke up with the sun and went to sleep shortly after it got dark. I found chores such as doing our laundry by hand to be times of meditation and reflection. We took care of the bees and birds and other animals displaced and without food. (Little souls I may not have even noticed before) We sat and chatted with our neighbors more. I was amazed by what we got done in a day. While we were ecstatic to have power and internet again, I really did learn lessons about mono-tasking and slowing down to take in and care for my surroundings. So I completely get what you are saying.

Thank you for reminding me. I love the simplicity of daily tasks and getting into a meditative, mindful state yet I often tend to entertain myself instead. It is good to hear what I already know. It takes time and can be very uncomfortable to make that switch, but it is so worth it. I will think of your message and keep reminding myself to switch off my devices more often in order to simply be and connect with what is. Thank you! 🌻

I have the old White Mountain ice cream maker that Mom and Dad used when we were small children. We wanted to do the cranking but could only do it for a short time as it becomes harder to turn as the ice cream develops. Thanks for the trip down memory lane... precious memories! ❤
