Thanks to my friend Stephen (On Insta and KZbin as 118GT) I am driving this forgotten Honda Gem - the UK build Accord Type R. Unlike the Japanese "Euro R", this one was built and sold here, when the Euro one wasn't... confusing, right!?
In either case, what is this last hurrah for Honda's old H22 engine like?

I'm not a Honda owner or a FWD owner but i'm pretty sure that those people who said it are probably, those who don't know how to eliminate an understeer *(Since FWDs are prone to understeer)* Also there's a thing called "Left foot braking". I heard that left foot braking can make FWD Cars exit more faster in the corner

You should do a touring car week. Example road going equivalents, Cavalier gsi2000, Vectra gsi, Mondeo st24, Mazda xedos, BMW E36 etc. If you can get a Celica st185gt4 Carlos Sainz edition I'd be grateful. My dad had one when I was a kid. Been my ultimate car since. Also a wild car and I doubt you'd get one. But have you ever heard of the Nissan bluebird zx turbo? Yes it was the hot version of the blandest car in the world, The bluebird. Lol dad had one also. Chipped, with upgraded turbo, intercooler and exhaust with the boost turned up. Was an animal in the mid 90s. Used to eat escort rs turbos running old school chips claiming 200bhp lol Ah nostalgia. Thanks for the video. Made me reminisce on old time memories and now my legs are completely numb and it's time to get off the toilet. Wish me luck!

The old Honda type Rs are incredible, the attention to detail and quality with regards to the engineering/driver experience is something I don't think we will see again at this price point. Their engines are effectively hand finished race units but with the fantastic reliability you'd expect from any other Japanese car, it's tantamount to witchcraft when you think about it. Truly miss my DC2. Love to see more like this on the channel please Jay 😁

Always fancied one of these until I bought my Legacy GTB (which has since been sold for a championship white edition FN2) The Accord was the number 1 car on my list, but the examples that were for sale all seemed to have problems that weren't disclosed on the adverts, or serious rust that was hidden cleverly in pictures. Enjoyable review, thanks, good to see these cars getting attention. I've had a Pirate Black pre-facelift as a daily driver for the last 2 years, and it always puts a smile on my face. Fortunately I'm able to do my own work, which has included Cam / Cranks shaft seals, VTEC Solenoid seal, valve clearances, cambelts & balance belts + pulleys & tensioners, the aforementioned rust hole in the bulkhead, brake rebuild, and way more. Its easy to see how people would buy it as a cheap car and then scrap / get rid of it rather than pay for the work to be done. Some comments I would say are that the brakes are really excellent once you get some decent pads on them, twin pot calipers, the suspension really sharpens up once you replace the worn bushes, its not as sharp as an Integra, but on our back roads they probably have better pace as they soak up the pot holes & bumps well. Agree about the power band, to stay in VTEC you have to take it to exactly 8,000 before changing gear.

@VGILee
@VGILee 2 жыл бұрын
Still my all time favourite car, at least on UK roads. 5 seats so the whole family can come too. Not that fast in absolute terms but fast enough if you’re comfortable about not being the fastest car on the road and - very importantly for me - it was exciting, even at legal speeds. I had an NSX and that was brilliant (was my dream car) but I preferred the Accord. It was just “me”. Begged to be thrashed, sounded fabulous, and if I ever did drive it hard enough on country roads to have the LSD kick in, it was so impressive. Every time before I got in the car, I thought about selling it. Every time I got out of the car, the idea of selling it seemed crazy, with me looking back with a huge smile on my face. Only the DC2 Integra was more exciting, but maybe with the Accord just being more unassuming or maybe it just suited the UK roads better, not sure I’d actually say I prefer the Integra. Six gears and a higher redline is the only way I think the car could have been improved. I replaced it with a Porsche 996 911 Carrera 2 and every single time I was out in it, I missed the Accord. I loved the look of the Porsche but wished underneath it could have been the Accord, engine ‘n’ all, despite the power deficit. I’ve got a B7 RS4 Avant now and it’s a great car, brilliant all rounder. Best car I’ve ever owned in so many ways. I just enjoyed the Accord more.

I had one for 4 years in silver but a pre facelift. I did like mine, it’s a great car to drive regards to handling and the engine is underrated. However rust is a really big issue, they go on the bulkhead which kills these. A rare sight and prices are low, if you can find a good one, buy it but expect parts to be rare and money to be spent on maintenance. Just a little side note on the video, it’s actually 209bhp from factory, 212PS.

An underrated car that was an absolute gem. It’s a sedan yet it’s lightweight. It’s FWD yet the rear end is compliant with trail braking meaning you can throttle on earlier than RWD car. That’s why DC2 was always punching above its weight class on tracks. Type-R Honda’s were typically tuned with inputs from Senna. I’d love to import a CH1 to the states to restore add in my weekend drivers collection. Ah the golden years of Honda.

Always the black sheep of the family in the early days but now quite sought after and now I think a very good investment. I like it and would be happy to have it sitting in the garage 😀

I sometimes forget that Honda used to make cars i had a lot of love for. The current Civic, especially the Type R, makes my stomach turn. These older cars gets my motor running. An EK9, or this, would be lovely :)

JohnnyNr5 I have a new Civic and just the shifter, you don't feel anything(uses cables) while in older Honda or Mazda you feel everything because they used rods with pivots and when I drive my son's 2003 Protege I compare his shifter to sex!

2001 was a pretty much a couple of decades ago... jeez time flies! I'm finding that as time is going on I'm preferring the what are now considered 'old school' classics.

James, I've just come across this video. 20 years ago I owned a facelift example in a dark aubergine colour - it had been Penny Mallory's car and was immaculate (with air con and a great after-market stereo). I'd wanted one for ages and it didn't disappoint. I've owned over 30 cars now - currently in an XF S - and this remains my favourite. Outstanding, intuitive handling with wishbones all round, really entertaining VTEC engine and 'box, and I loved Honda's obsessive attention to detail with lightweight window glass, Momo wheel and brilliant Recaros. I took it down to Le Mans with some friends and loved the fact it was a petrolhead's choice. Sold it so I could get a new bathroom. What an idiot.

Ahhhhh… the old “sold it for a new bathroom/kitchen/conservatory” tale of woe. Nemesis of many a fella’s automotive fun

@@ramaizhassan4862 I previously worked at H-Tune and I now work at Torque GT, my old daily MB4 was a B18C4 swap with a Skunk2 Pro Series Intake Manifold (butterfly delete) and a 2.5" exhaust, and I've driven EP3s/DC5s. Quite honestly? I prefer a H for the crossover and a B overall, K if I had to daily again though. Frankly, they're all brilliant.

I had an H22 equipped Accord in the US. On the right road, they're amazing. But ~160lb-ft pushing around a ~3000lb car + driver just doesn't have the grunt I'd like. I found myself looking for the right stretch of road for VTEC, and then being disappointed by it lol.

I had exactly the same car 3 years ago. Silver, geen interior and facelift. As a drivers car I loved it, took me ages to find a low mileage one without a rusty bulkhead! But it did start rusting while I had it!!! The LSD was the standout feature, deserving equal praise to the vtec, it really pulls you into the apex, fantastic. However I could not live with it on the m-way just to thrashy on a long run, needs a 6th gear. However as a drivers car in saloon form I rate it above my E39 M5, my B7 RS4 and my Imprezza Turbo. I would have another but would need to take the 675LT if I had a long motorway trip. If it has a FSH, lowish miles and no rust its worth near the £6k, they are very rare now and 95% are high miles and rotten. A real shame. Cheers James 👍

Something about honda type R's they dont have to be the most powerful things in the world yet they just ooze fun, I think it's just a solid mix of useable power, the delivery of power, high revs, lightweight, fine gearboxes and a great chassis which all equals a very involving drive 👌 what a great balance and I love that Honda dont chase big power figures or consider that is solely important.

I just discovered one of these for sale in my country. From 2000 in championship white. Man, I gotta say, it’s really tempting. Idk why, but I always liked that generation of Accord, and to have it in Type R guise is really tempting. However the rusting problems are a bit of a turnoff

I was passenger on a trackday in one of these and I was surprised how well it went compared to the average hot hatch, both in the bends and on the straights.

This was made for Touring Car Class. They need to sell 1000+ street version to compete with the car. As handling is better than any non supercar in its time. Even some more popular Hondas can't compare with this in corners. Also H22 was used in "GP2 class" of that time. This car has racing pedigree but most people don't have a clue about that.
