The 1.7 turbo was a great car with a helping hand from lotus on the suspension and Porsche on the turbo setup.They were a great engine conversion for the Renault 5’s too.The 480 seats were comfy too

@paulmurphy91514 жыл бұрын
Partly why so few are left, a lot of 400 series cars were scrapped for their engines by the Clio/R5 owners. It's a straight swap into the 1.7 R5 as it's the same engine but turbocharged and far better than the 1.4 R5 Turbo carburetted engine!

That 1.7ltr out of a Renault was quite unreliable. I tried to work on a Volvo 340gl with the 1.7 engine. It had many card and electrical issues which took a long time to figure as they were such weird, abnormal faults!

This brings back memories, loved my old 480 ES even with all its electrical gremlins! Had the timing belt break on turning the key and got away with only needing to replace one valve, guess I was lucky!

In 91 I was a mechanic at a Volvo dealer. These and the 440 were really easy to work on especially the 1.7 injection. Great reliable motors.

When I was 7 we went to a Volvo dealer. The 480 was released a year earlier. We both fell in love with it. It was so unique and the interior was so modern. The only other car that came close was the civic. So my dad and a cousin set off to an auction to get a 480 or a golf. I urged my old man to go for the 480. They came back with a 340! A bloody DAF of all things. I know my old man regretted it but it was bittersweet. Compared to our previous car, a fiat Strada the Volvo just kept going. Around '04 it was passed on to a cousin.

Wow, that is a pristine example, very rare, most have been neglected. Congratulations! Only the name was Swedish, the design, development and production was done by former DAF engineers at Volvo Car BV, Netherlands. The car is based upon a Renault 9 floorpan with Renault running gear. There's an active Volvo 480 forum in the UK should you need technical assistance, because the electrics, although they're German (VDO/Siemens/Hella), can and will fail. The popups need some greasing and new gas struts (25 quid each) and will pop-up faster after using them more. Enjoy! :)

I had that exact Volvo 480 in that colour..it was the Limited Edition celebration 480 with the 2.0 engine which there were only 480 made and it was the last ones they made. Very cool Volvo. The story is i bought it off the Mercedes/bmw dealership i worked for back in 2003. The original owner forked out for new Mercedes and....a few months after i returned their car to there home after a problem they had with the Mercedes and i got chatting with the owner and told them i had bought their old 480 (which was mint). They actually wished they hadn't bought the Mercedes, and that they deeply regretted trading in the Volvo.

Great video with a great looking 480! I used to drive a black 1987 1,7 ES. Started my ownership by getting all the electronics fixed at a BOSCH shop. After that it ran perfectly and even the Audi A4s backed off when it came up in their rears. Quite funny since the engine hadn't much power in it. It was a lovely car. Did the job at the end of the day, but when the ceiling fell down going home from (of all places Gothenburg) I got sort of fed up with it and sold it. Regretted it a lot though. Now I sort of fancy getting another one but they are rarely up for sale around here (DK). Another factor is my girlfriend that thinks two cars must be enough. I guess I'll let time do its job.

I had a couple of 440 turbos back in the day, they were dirt cheap as nobody wanted them. The first one I had I payed £400 for and it was the first turbo car I had, it was quick but it smoked nearly as much as Dot cotton in the end, the second one I brought a couple of years later for £50 with a slipping clutch 😂
@ArieVisker Жыл бұрын
One of the cool grill designs. On of the designers (Steve Harper) took the idea from the Ferrari 308. So the front of the 480 has almost the same look (grill and foglights beneath the bumper) as the Ferrari 308. Take a look there is a close resemble. The interior was designed by Peter Horbury and has a similar look of the VW Sirocco. Porsche gave the 1.7 Turbo engines a tweek by the way.

That's a clean example, the good ones are getting rarer. For me the Turbo model is the best engine, definitely not fragile like stated in the video, easily tuned back to the 170bhp that Volvo/Porsche developed it to. I've had a Celebration, several Turbo's, GT and 1.7S and the 2 litre engine's main benefit is better fuel consumption. Currently have a low mileage Turbo with no water leaks or faulty electrics, it seems the 480's profile is finally on the rise 😁

I have a renault Super 5 GTX90 (spanish made model ) and 2:35 is exactly right, my car runs a f-type 1.721 cc engine (F2N) that it's in practice exactly the same as that volvo 480 turbo. Mine of course being NA. Pretty neat block, i think it was originally designed as a diesel and then turned into gasoline so it's strong as a rock, the only problem i had was a broken timing belt once and some valves bent, but changed it and works just fine. I drive it a lot and enjoy it as well. Nice Volvo by the way!!!

@p.informatico13204 жыл бұрын
The engine of the 2.0 GT, as this one, are of Volvo origin, but the 1.7 n/a or turbo, are of Renault origin. Even if there are not many turbo 480s around, there are a lot of their engines in R5 and Clios, so saying they are unreliable... i don't think so.

I've had about 8 480's over the last 20 years and the electrical issues are mostly a myth. Water ingress affecting the CEM control module and age related damage to the wiring going to the rear window have been the only issues. Common issues and easily sorted. Parts availability is good, other than for specialist items like front/rear lamps.
