Maharaj Shashank was the first true great ruler if Gaur Banga- Bwngal. A great warrior, a great administrator and a king he led Bengl to prosperity. His capital Karnasuvarna was known as the city of gold. The Buddhist texts all alignining with their benefactor Harsha had tried to malign Shashank. The great king , a devout Shaiva, died at 42 after a brief illnes- a fever that lasted 5 days. He was succeded by his son- the 18 yr old Manab who was killed and overthrown later. Only then Harsha could extend his empire in Bengal.

But he could not extend his empire to the end of kashmir. That does not demean his credit as an empire builder. He laid the ground for a future empire on a sound foundation on which the later kings shone. It was the Pal king Devpal who extended his empire to include kashmir.

Historically which part is bihar? Was there any bihar and biharis in ancient period? The lands now called bihar and Jharkhand were parts of Bengal right from the time of king Shashanka. Then the Pal and Sen kings also ruled those lands. Thereafter the sultans of Bengal also ruled these. So these lands traditionally and continuously belong to Bengal and Bengalis. The British unfairly gave these to the biharis because they were obedient servants. That does not mean that these should always remain with the biharis. Bengalis should reclaim these lost grounds.
