Yes this really happened, in Japan they did an anime continuation of the 87 TMNT show where they gained new super mutations. I go over this and the manga version of these Super Turtles!

I like that there's a throwaway gag establishing 1. Foot soldiers are apparently sapient beings with emotions and desires, and 2. Krang is a nice enough boss to allow them to go on vacation, and is even seemingly appalled at the idea of interrupting their time off. Really frames the original show in a bit of a different light if you take that to be canon.

Something I've learned from Legends of Localization is that Japanese swearing is context-based, so the less polite the context, the more intense it is. It's unlikely the characters are "really" swearing in Japanese, but because it's so situational many translators just go with the average intensity of the swear word in question (e.g. "bastard" or "shit").
@misssanx6227
@misssanx6227 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, also "shit" is not so strong for them as far my boyfriend explained to me since he is Japanese, "kuzo" is not really strong they said it even in the Sonic X cartoon and I was little when I watched. These parts in french (the way I watched as little) were actually translated differently for not sounding too rude. Saying "shit" in French was too strong for kids so in the translation we had another meaning.

@JohnDoe-wq5eu
@JohnDoe-wq5eu 2 жыл бұрын
@@YMasterS Yeah we've come a long way since the early fansubs of like the '80s/90's but it's true translating from Japanese into something like english takes quite a bit of the nuance out of it. Also there are a lot of little things that just don't work or translate or localize well. Not only with certain humor and puns and stuff but cultural stuff really is difficult for anyone outside of Japan to truly understand or comprehend. The whole politeness this thing is really baked into it and names and honorifics (I think that's the word I'm looking for) that show either respect or lack of respect or are things like a casual relationship are very difficult to convey if you don't get it.

Okay if you are actually curious as to why that bird was there, it’s because if you were to ask a Japanese person a crow’s call is “aho aho” (although sometimes “Baka” much like how westerners would say that’s “kaw”) which is similar to a Japanese word for “idiot” or “dumbass” so that pun tends to be a common gag in some Japanese media

The "Only rental" designation is likely because there were different UPC codes and different ads on the official releases of the rental vs. retail tape. IIRC, advertisers would pay more to get on rental tapes, with the logic being that the ads would be seen by potentially hundreds of people instead of just one family. The practice effectively died out when Blockbuster started to buy dozens of copies of something per store, and then selling them pre-viewed as soon as they turned a profit. Suddenly your "rental only" tape could plausibly be seen by only 4 or 5 people before becoming a retail product, and it was really hard to track.

When our Blockbuster went out of business, I bought a few of their "rental only" DVDs. Most of them were normal, but one or two had unskippable ads/trailers before the main menu could be displayed. I have to admit. The more I revisit this OVA series the more I appreciate how it at least manages to capture the spirit of the original better than dull, directionless Transformers Headmasters or that lame PPG anime that fanbase somehow swears by. Though I honestly can't tell if they're trying to parody anime tropes or just rip them off. The Metal Mutants seem to be heavily inspired by (or ripping off) Saint Seyia. There's a LOT of DBZ in here down to the theme music being the same guy who composed the theme to DBZ. And at least the TMNT characters seem authentically like their original counterparts, as far as the dubs they're based off of go. And gotta love those early 00's English subtitles. Chock full of cussing that's probably like 50% accurate. Love how they translate "yare yare" as "Oh God" instead of "Good grief." I really wish Playmates or someone would rerelease those Wolverine looking Turtles, though.
@SwiftNimblefoot
@SwiftNimblefoot 2 жыл бұрын
So true. Headmasters was the epitome of boredom, and Masterforce and Victory are not that much better. The bad dub at least made it mildly entertaining. PPG anime is just unfunny. Really doesn't add anything new to the show. And yeah, the metals line was a sort of Saint Seyia ripoff. Fun fact, the "Lost Season" of the 2003 show, the Ninja Tribunal, has these same metals dragon forms as the ultimate Chi powers of the turtles, and they fight the Tengu demon Shredder who can turn into the same giant dragon form as the metals Shredder toy.
@mightyfilm
@mightyfilm 2 жыл бұрын
@@SwiftNimblefoot I do think they're both better than Masterforce, but only because they dropped the main problem with Headmasters. They weren't trying to follow an American sensibility when they were writing the series. Headmasters was trying too hard to be the first 2 seasons of the American cartoon, but slipping in some shonen anime tropes here and there. Where as, for all the faults of Masterforce and Victory, embracing the fact they were Japanese exclusive made the writing a lot smoother and far less awkward. Of course, both shows took forever to find their footing when Headmasters never actually got to. Still, not nearly as good as the Brave Saga or even Car Robots. I just wish Victory didn't have such an abrupt ending. As for PPGZ, they took a bog standard Magic Girl Warrior show and slapped the PPG license on it. It wasn't even a Magic Girl parody, but very much a straight up generic series. The whole point of PPG is that it's a super hero parody. I'd say that the closet thing Japan got to a TRUE PPG Magic Girl show is Panty Stocking and Garterbelt, even if it's for a different demographic.

@@MathematicalVoid I'll be the only one to say this, but the anime annoys me a hell of a lot worse than the reboot. It was made at the wrong time by the wrong people for the wrong reasons for the wrong demographic. There was a fan fic understanding of the original, giving the series a photocopy of a photocopy feel, and I'd liken it more to, say The Simpsons or Family Guy when they get a new batch of writers after the old writers ruined the series a few seasons after it should have ended. PPGZ is basically a lame Tokyo Mew Mew clone with PPG names slapped on there. They had NO understanding of what made the original funny or special, not even the "I grew up with it and interpreted it as such" way. Just... and I do know fans that LOVE the anime and act like it's a parody when it's not even smartly written enough to be one. Actually, I'd liken it to Loonatics Unleashed, but without the apology of a second season where they fought versions of their own villains instead of the stock bad guys that could have been in any action cartoon at the time.

The Saint Mutation with a giant timer reminded me of GARO, it does create potential for some creative fight scenes when you're limited by a timer. Maybe with a bigger budget, better writters and more episodes they could have come up with some better fights in that form.

OH THANK YOU PHELOUS for FINALLY REVIEWING the TMNT ANIME! (I've been waiting for you to do this one) Considering you've already endured the Dumpster Fire that is The Next Mutation, this has gotta be a step up. At least it should be entertaining to see Japan's take on our four favorite ninjas who happen to be mutant turtles named after four Renaissance artists that live in the sewers. Its hopefully going to he a weird and zany ride (as both TMNT and Anime should be).

The crow calling someone an dumbshit (idiot) gag is an anime classic (I think its got something to do with how a crow's caw sounds in Japanese), and was also popular in another little ninja anime called "Naruto". Master Splinter's protege would be right at home in Naruto anime filler (which is where the crow gag was often used).

"I always thought this is what turtles needed to be". Considering that Phelous like 2012's TMNT, he should know that the show was full of weird anime moments because it was a western anime.

This feels like the Japanese take on some of the US-centric Transformers series, like Beast Wars which in the Japanese dub was a lot more gag-heavy compared to the original script.

Also, you know, kudos on the research into these. I knew they existed, and even watched one years ago, and it would have been real easy to just make a video where you say "whoa that's weeeird" but the background information really adds to it. That's what I like about your vids.

I think the reason they changed Shredder's name is not that it's just better but because, as far as i know, in Japanese language, Saki is a female name.

Yeah I was also thinking that. Also it's often spelled with the kanji for "bloom", so maybe they thought it was a bit too cute for the villain.

My favorite bit was at the end when the fairy committed the raditz maneuver to defeat the enemy. And there was a time that, without context, just seeing the transformation would be enough to say this is bad, but actually watching it, it wasn't all that off from the silliness of the original show at that point.

The second one relies a lot more on Japanese folklore/history to work (their armors being based on the guardians of Kyoto for example), I love both myself tbh Was really good to see you reviewing these at last, you rock phelous ✌️
