Jack Hawkins, one of the all-time great actors,if only he had given up smoking before it was too late. Incidentally, the miniature medals he is wearing are his own,he served as a Colonel in India during the war.

Frank Thornton was a lovely man a good friend and we miss him. He was the complete opposite to Captain Peacock as he had a wonderful cheeky sense of humour. Frank was a Flying Officer during the second world war & new someone just like Peacock. His wife Beryl and he married in 1945 & were happily together until Franks death in 2013 aged 93. 🌹

The irony is that Charles Grey dubbed the voice of Jack Hawkins when he was suffering from incurable throat cancer.

Whilst there can be no doubt that Jack Hawkins was a first rate actor and respected personality, I think it only fair to point out that he dis not serve, not was he appointed, as a Colonel during WWII. In fact his official biography lists the following entry: Second World War Having attended an Officer Cadet Training Unit, he was commissioned into the Royal Welch Fusiliers, British Army, as a second lieutenant on 8 March 1941.[8] On 22 January 1944, he transferred to the Expeditionary Force Institutes in the rank of lieutenant.[9] He served with ENSA in India and Southeast Asia.[10] He relinquished his commission as a lieutenant (substantive) on 11 October 1946, and was granted the honorary rank of colonel.[11] During his military service, he made The Next of Kin (1942) for Ealing Studios.
