It is such a view-shifting realization, and such a relief, too! Before seriously diving deep into Tibetan Buddhist concepts, I had a few 'glimpses' of that realization, but because I had no way to understand it, I would forget so fast. When I started reading and learning, it blew my mind to realize they were explaining and clarifying what I had experienced. I am so grateful to come into contact with the Dharma in this life, and now I feel such an obligation to help the community and all the people in my life. Have a great day friend; may you and your loved ones find happiness and all it's causes.

@@dhoukartsebunja9398 Even if that were true, you're not going to convince many people by making your comments in an accusing, rude way. I stand by my statement. I have enough respect for other people and their intelligence to encourage them to investigate and question things, and decide for themselves. I can probably guess why you feel the way you do, since you've lumped Tibetan Buddhism under the vague, broad umbrella of "religion" so that you may attack it from such an angle; I think if you did more research you might develop a better opinion of the tradition.

Such a simple & beautiful explanation! I always had doubt on our lineages. Even after 4 full retreats on Buddhist philosophy in Himachal, i couldn't understand the major difference between these four and now I'm confident with it. Can teach other people why different lineages and why there's still no hierarchy :)

Personal answer to the reflection question - I think all the lineages have indirectly brought a lot of benefit to my life, because there are amazingly precious masters in all the lineages and they affected me directly or indirectly. To me the perfect lineage would be which takes into account the human tendencies in the present degenerate age (very low attention span, rigid cynicism opposed to flexible cynicism, no moral compass, fake gurus babas everywhere). Also I think spending a large chunk of time just memorising texts and not practicing is not so good. You could be the most learned scholar in the world but if you are not kind-hearted, not generous, sincere, warm, compassionate - all that intellectual understanding is of no use to anyone!

Very educative. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

Mostly in the Tibetan tradition you are born into the lineage that you will practice, it is a twist by most westerners to have before hand knowledge of what they want to follow like an entitlement and getting to choose where they think they belong, l was a Karma Kagyu follower for 7 years and like most westerners l was brought into the Dharma by the mystic of what l had heard from other westerners point of view's and seemingly religious practices. it all sounds very enticing until you find yourself sitting on a cold stone floor doing Mantras at 4:30 in the morning in a language that is foreign to you and then working in the Kitchen serving roast duck to the rinpoche's on fine china while you eat a bowl mush cause your trying to live without ego, Oh yeah lots and lots of politics that are simply not mentioned to the novice and every study you do to answer 1 question you will find 2 more questions like a riddle to keep you searching, kind of like the snake eating itself and never getting the required nutrition.

You say it depends on one's personality, but is the lineage something that one can choose in Tibet or are you born into it? Were they separated by geography in Tibet or all intermixed? When you visit a Tibetan temple, how do you know which lineage it represents? Thank you in advance to anyone deigns to answer my questions....

The 4 main lineages have sublineages. Eg. the Kagyu has the 4 great and 8 lesser lineages. I had the good fortune to study and practice with masters of the 4 lineages, including Mingyur Rinpoche, who is Nyingma. His presentation is somewhat generalized and all the lineages include study and meditation from the start, at least in the West, where the vast majority of practitioners are lay people instead of monks or nuns. But when you attend programs in the West it may emphasis study or practice or sometimes both. Also, there are smaller lineages, like the Bon lineage.

It was a time of intense mindfulness which probably caused the sleep "problems" in the first place. What is the point of 4 schools when there should only be a single truth? All this does is promote tribalism. And why is it that Tibetan Buddhists place more emphasis or importance on some random spirit, deity, or even their guru higher than that of the original Buddha?

Each of the lineages tackle different aspects of Tibetan Buddhism very deeply and in Tibetan Buddhism we do not place more importance on some random spirits than the original Buddha, but in Buddhism Buddha isn't the most important thing it is his teaching and yes I know if buddha didn't exist his teaching wouldn't too but now only this is the truth. In Buddhism we even say that those spirits and deities should not be viewed as above oneself and should be worshipped but rather be viewed as equal friend that coexist with us.

Tenzin Dorjee I wouldn’t call the simplistic explanation in the video answers to anything. He basically says the four schools are like the 4 legs of a table and that each school suits certain types of personalities better than others. Ok so what if you’re a monk raised in one school but your personality is better suited for a different school. Are you allowed to initiate a transfer to a different monastery so that you can more effectively reach enlightenment? To me the whole idea of 4 schools always seemed like your classic scheme to divide and conquer the people in the name of religion or spirituality.

Potato_ nyin_ maybe it’s just your school (which of the 4 do you follow?) that taught you that the spirits and deities are simply friends or equals. I know there are Buddhists that pray and for all intents and purposes, worship deities or spirits.

@@treeman_mj I am part of nyingmapa and I am aware of those, well I'm not sure what you mean with praying to them since there are prayers to those deities but not praying in the sense that we worship them, although it is common for Tibetan people to worship those deities but it is not the right way

one shld have to learn before practice. if like kagyu, you practice before learning, there is the danger of becoming sorcerer, not great master.

Like all 4 lineages, the Kagyu includes study and practice from the beginning, but in the West programs are often study or practice as most practitioners are lay people and not monks or nuns. Also, some teachers have connections to more than one lineage. For example, my main teacher, Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche was Kagyu but one of his main teachers (Dilgo Khyentse, Rinpoche) was Nyingma.

As far as Buddha, with all your respect,he was a great spiritual leader, along with Jesus and Krishna. But ... that's about it.When it comes to turn the teachings into a religion, well, aaaά!!!! Neither Buddha or Jesus wanted their teachings to become a religion. And yet, look Christianity,or Judeo-Christianity,or whatever you call it.Manipulation.

That's why we always say that Buddhism isn't a religion and but a way of life, even himself said that his followers shouldn't follow him because they have faith but because they see his teachings be true by practicing only then they should follow him
