You NEED a bag in the vacuum. All shop vacs, including the Rigid vacuums, have optional bags. You don't need a blue filter. But you need a filter bag. You can re-use the filter bag by carefully cutting it open with scissors, empty it out (while wearing a respirator outdoors) then tape it back up with duct tape, and the tape holds just fine, and doesn't leak at all. The difference between a bag, and no bag, is 50% more suction with the bag in. The suction never goes down, AT ALL with a filter bag, and the filter never gets clogged ever. Combining a blue HEPA filter with the filter bag, would be the ideal solution. (If you don't have a cyclone separator). You don't need a cyclone if you can just afford to use the filter bags.

Changing to using bags was the best improvement I’ve done. My filter was always clogged reducing suck and cleaning the filter made more dust than the job. I also added the separator so I didn’t use as many bags. But I use short bigger hoses than the one that came with the shop vac. It’s still smallish and portable. 2 years ago I bought the Bosch axial glide. No DIY fixes helped much because the OEM shute doesn’t move with the saw and was too far back. Adding the Shop Nation upgrade made a huge improvement. This setup gets almost all the fine stuff. Only small amount of larger chips that can bounce out now escape.

I did the same thing, and while the bags for mine where I live are CAD $10 each which makes my cheap bastard soul flinch a little, the filters are a lot more expensive. I was replacing the filter every third time I emptied the tank before; now I've gone through several bags and the filter is barely discoloured. Overall, it still beats a $1200 HEPA dust extractor, so my soul feels a little better. 😂

Great video. One thing I have found as well is that the bags slightly decrease suction as well. But they are so worth the loss you take in my opinion. And these dust issues happen with every saw! I couldn’t believe how little if any, that my dust collection improved after upgrading to a Kapex.

Bought a Hitachi (now Metabo HPT) sliding miter saw a few years ago, which has a larger dust port. A two inch hose cuff from a 6 HP Ridgid HD1400 fits perfectly. I use both a filter bag and the blue fine particle filter. This setup captures a lot more dust and chips than the earlier setup - an OLD non-sliding miter saw with 1.5” port and an OLD shopvac with 1 1/4” hose. However, dust still goes EVERYWHERE. I much prefer to work with the doors open and a fan blowing. Last year I also came into possession of my father’s old Craftsman radial arm saw, and a 2HP HF dust collector. Currently working on installation of the DC. Plan to install the miter saw and RAS side by side, with cabinets to right and left - essentially a “miter station”. Fisher’s Shop published a video on KZbin in which he built what is essentially an auxiliary fence with dust collection, which appeared to work quite well, and has been copied by a number of others, with good results, so I plan to try that. There are also a few videos showing how to build better dust collection for the RAS. These are essentially very similar, ie, a box (with a dust port) at the fence captures the vast majority of dust particles and chips coming off the blade. Again this approach seems to work very well. In both cases, this approach has one limitation - it works for 90 degree cuts. For each miter and bevel, a different “box” would be needed, something most of us will not bother with. However, if I was making a LOT of cuts at the same angle, it might be worth it, similar to swapping the zero clearance insert. Enjoyed your video. Thank-you! Good luck with the injury.

I had a 50' hose for a pool vacuum and build a little dust vortex collector as a prefilter. I found that automotive vacuum / intake rubber connectors are cheap compared to shop vac specific branded ones and made it really easy to do non reducing connections on all of my tools. The pre filter actually has the additional benefit of being able to easily disengage the shop vac from the system. Otherwise I put a pool skimmer sock on the shop vac filter and it seems like I keep the dust down in my garage shop.

Nice video. I can understand the Achilles thing. I’m a runner and ultra endurance bicycle guy and have had three Achilles surgeries during the last six years. The first surgery included four anchors to reattach my achilles. I started running again and pulled two of the anchors out twelve months later. 🤦🏽‍♂️ Yep, a boned headed move. Wait for it. 🙅🏾‍♂️ I rode my bicycle 7,000 miles in 2022 and had surgery #3 in December of 2022. At least that one was only to clean up scar tissue. I learned the hard way to be very very very careful. My woodshop is a safe haven these days with my three dust collection systems. (Oh yeah, I’m an asthmatic too).

The cost and difficulty of dust collection is enormous. You have to engineer your entire shop to have proper dust mitigation. It is easier for most people to just go outside, and sweep up when they are done. There appears to be an infinite complexity to dust control, where you can spend the rest of your life designed cyclone separators, and hose systems and ductwork. I am jealous of people who have devoted years and years of time to their dust collection system, because it's not exactly easy getting all your major tools setup with full dust collection.

Using duct tape for the dust shroud is a great idea! I'm going to have to try that. FYI... The dust port on the back of the mitre saw is Dewalt's AirLock system. If you want a perfect fit, go buy the DWV9000 Universal Adapter and screw it on to any 1-1/4 inch hose.

I do tinker with the miter saw dust collection. My favourite method on an xgt that has 2 dust collection points is to run a vacuum to each port. It really does wonders.

This is one of the most educational videos ever! The wind speed tests are so eye opening. I have a kind suggestion. For future videos could you rate all your tools based on "Amps" of the motor? Amps are an appropriate and important measurement, because some people don't even have enough power to run that 6.5 HP vacuum. The "HP" number on most modern electrical machines seem to be a random number, without any meaning. For the RIDGID 40108 vacuum, I think it has 12 Amps.

Just to add that it's probably better to measure power in Watts. On 110VAC, your 12Amp appliance is rated at 1.2kW, which would be only 5A on a 240VAC system that most of Europe uses. HP might have made sense in the steam age, but it's not much use when talking about electrically powered machinery.(edit to add, unless you can do the conversion from HP to W - 746W to be precise). That said, you're right about HP on electrical appliances being a seeming random number - 6.5HP is getting on for 5kW it would draw almost 50A at 110VAC - that's more than my dediacted 240vAC cooker outlet can handle!) Regarding filtration, a tip I have seen is to use a pool filter mesh bag over the paper filter. It probably doesn't reduce the particulate emissions, but it stops your paper filter from clogging with fine dust, is easier to clean, and cheaper to throw away, extending the life of your more expensive paper filter.

TIP: when trying to connect the shop vac hose to a small miter saw hose, take schedule 40 (white) pvc pipe that fits on the miter saw hose & heat it with a heat gun, so you can then stretch it to it over larger shop vac hoses. When it cools, it fits snug on the outside of the saw dust hose & over the shop vac hose. Super easy & I leave my adapter on my saw so I just connect the shop vac when cutting.

Great information. HP isn't necessarily the best way to determine the "best" shop vac. There are some comparisons of major brands to look at. Regardless of the brand, the shorter the hose the better.

Nice video, nice to see how much of a difference all this stuff actually makes. I'm just looking into setting up a little garage workshop. I've been using a shop vac with my saws on site when possible for awhile though. I find plumbing fernco's work well for getting the larger hose to work with the tools (I have the 716 as well). I've been looking into dust collectors as well- any experience with these? One benefit seems to be less noise and also less amperage than a big shop vac, which could be a plus in a rented shop space with limited electrical capacity. The cheaper ones seem to be a couple hundred bucks.

I'll definitely need to mod the dust collector of my dewalt saw. The 6.5 hp rigid vacuum sucks the chute flaps in and closes it off. It's too powerful even with the dust separator. But man do I like how clean the separator keeps the filter

Check your vacuum bags occasionally when using them to make sure they don’t fall off when you’re moving it around, especially as the bag begins to get full. Also, I put some packing tape or duct tape on the side of the bag that faces the filter where the inlet comes in from the hose to prevent rapid erosion.

Might be worth mentioning auto-start amperage when you connect a vacuum to a high-powered drop saw. I’ve been in discussions with Makita Australia that say some of the smaller vacs simply can’t handle the load.

Before you are able to weight bear (sooner than later I hope), please get an orthotic made to equalize your left foot to the height of the walking cast (or whatever that plastic cast is called) or you may find that your hips etc. will suffer due to the different height of both feet. However, one thing is not clear for me from your experiments (but is extremely relevant to my personal situation :) ) You emphasise the "over top" connection being critical (which makes sense) but at the same time you also used a much wider diameter hose. So what actually made the biggest difference? The hose diameter or the inside vs outside connection to the saw? Did you also run a test with the narrower Festool hose jerry rigged to create an "outside" connection? I'd love to know the results of that! :) I suspect that the hose diameter made the bigger difference but have a vested interest in the inside/outside factor being the game changer here I am not happy with the dust collection on my Kapex 60/ Festool vac combo but I REALLY don't want to buy another vac or an expensive Festool hose LOL

A small note about quoted vacuum hp ratings. A standard wall outlet in the USA provides 15 amps of current. 15 amps x 110 volts = 1650 watts. Being that there are 745 watts in 1 horsepower, 1650 watts = 2.2 horsepower. With that said, any vacuum quoting a hp rating above 2.5hp (2.2hp) that comes with a standard plug is automatically lying.

I use a makita sliding mitre saw with a makita dust extractor and there’s still airborne sawdust.( the extraction starts when the mitre saw is started) extra work for me to do when I use it indoors. I need to find a better solution. Any suggestions people
