Based on Henry van Dyke's classic, The Story of the Other Wise Man, this fictional story set in Biblical times is told in gently comic terms. A Magi named Artaban (Martin Sheen) sees a sign in the heavens that he hopes will lead him and his faithful servant to the Messiah. Artaban takes with him three precious gifts to present to the Messiah. For 33 years Artaban pursues Jesus, only to miss Him at every turn.
Along the way, Artaban uses his gifts to help people in dire need. He now has nothing to present to the Messiah when he finds Him. The story culminates on Easter Sunday as Artaban, old and dying, finally encounters the new King, bringing peace to his life. A deeply moving experience examining what true faith really means.

It was December of 1957 and our entire family of 7 was crammed into a small apartment in Cincinnati, Ohio. We rarely watched TV. But my dad decided we would watch the Fourth Wise Man. It was a magical (in the best sense of the word) experience. Seven of us gathered together in a small apartment living room that had this luxury, a fireplace around which we were gathered while we watched The Fourth Wise Man. And I remember noting that my mom, who was tiny, less than 5 ft. tall, was sitting in my dad's lap. My dad was almost 6 ft. tall. I, the oldest, was 16. None of us forgot that Christmas, in large part because of this wonderful production. Several different times I have read the story out loud to church gatherings which included children and adults. Christmas of 1989, I happened across Henry Vandyke's book, an edition that also included a preface in which VanDyke tells us his story of the birth of this story: birthed after a year of enormous pain. Not all editions of this story include this preface, but it is included in the edition published by the Crossings Book Club in Garden City, NY. \

This was one of our favorite Christmas stories that our Mother read to us. Dad always played the Wiseman...he was very dramatic, and we always rolled around laughing! He loved that! But, it was not always a happy story, yet it made us happy in a strange way.Years later, we finally understood why our parents never explained.
