“My tax dollars pay for On A Rail.” Truly the worst possible turn of events.
@judsongaiden98782 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: 'On a Rail' was originally supposed to involve a player-controlled vehicle (not just a tram), but they couldn't get it to work in that ye olde engine. The concept made it into Half-Life 2 and resulted in some of the most interesting and unique chapters. 'Highway 17' reminds me of Damnation Alley (which predates Mad Max).

Granted, that's not really worth a whole lot when it comes to them, but this game actually has a surprising number of mechanics and features that kinda help to create a slightly more in-depth experience. You have things like bomb defusing sections, hacking mini games, tripwire laser bombs you can only see with night vision goggles, and levels where you can only incapacitate enemies instead of killing them outright.

When I was a kid and visited the White House the metal detector in the line I was in happened to be broken that day. It was a good thing, too, because my dad bought me my first pocket knife that morning, I forgot to leave it behind in my excitement, and even kids my age in the next line over were being pulled aside to get wanded for the buttons on their jeans along with everyone else who made that other detector beep, with only sheer luck seeing me through to the other side (though it was common sense that kept my mouth shut and to not tell them my side's was broken or how I knew). This game shows exactly what I believed was going to happen the entire time I was waiting in line, sweating bullets during the lead up, planning how I was either going to fight my way out or punch my ticket to Valhalla. I was what those guys had trained for, or just about, and here it seems like pretty much what you are getting to play against. Sure it's shown from the other perspective, and I was ten, but the attention to realism here, at least according to what might be conjured up in a child's imagination while stuck in one of the most simultaneously harrowing and lucky situations of his life, is what really impressed me about it. If they'd found that knife it would have been pure bedlam, and now having seen this, whether a blessing or a curse, I don't have to imagine anymore how it would have gone down.
