Fellow back pain sufferer here. Glad to hear you're getting better and I hope you can put that entirely behind you.

Thanks. Yeah, in my case it’s combination of few things. Sitting too much at the work table, having too little versatile exercise (boat building apparently doesn’t count… 😒) and then going suddenly to do three days of snowboarding. Luckily it’s “just” muscles, not the spine.

Hello friend🙋‍♂️snowboarding giving you some after affects? It's so fun getting older😁last time I saw your boathouse it was covered in snow. Hope all is well there in Findland! Voted world's happiest country! Thanks for sharing and keep safe😁💯👍🙏

We used to paint/surface our "questionable" slats with really thin, prewarmed Epoxy once each side and could improve the quality into "excellent" or "fair" that way. The tighter the curve, the thinner the slats, the bigger the "questionable" pile - even more so with wood in hardware-store quality. Thanks for sharing!

I live in the southern US, and I wish we had such clear lumber at our outlet stores as you called it construction lumber. Thanks for the update, and I hope you're feeling better after you holiday.

You should make a 2 wheel dolly with a wide wheel base to wedge on your frames as you are moving them around.

Oh I think I’d be steaming them. They would end up like spaghetti - easy! All you need is a length of polythene pipe or similar, a gas camp stove, and a pot of some description to boil water in. Doesn’t need to be high tech or complex for small thin lengths like you’re using. I guess you’re only doing a few tight frames like that one but still, worth considering if you have a fight on your hands. Nice work. Keep it up. Cheers
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
Hi! Yeah, the problem there is the water itself. It tends to freeze 😅 There has been so many suggestions for steaming that I have a bit of pressure to try it one day! 😅
@jackdbur
@jackdbur Жыл бұрын
Yes in summer you could have steamed them into shape and then allowed them to dry and they would be easy to laminate. Though I probably would have gotten lumber in the length required for that particular frame. Using your table to add some blocks to use wedges on the outside of the frame would allow you to get more pressure than your clamps.
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
@@jackdbur Yeah. There's good sides on summer. Bad side is that working time with epoxy is very limited! Winter temps work great with big laminations like these! There's really not that much force needed with the "regular frames". Also epoxy doesn't require that much force. The slats are also so smooth that the joints are pretty much perfect without any need for filling properties.

I laminated an inner stem for a 30’ powerboat last Sunday - I can empathize on the bending multiple layers (34). I saw them fighting back 😀

With thicker slats you'd need less Epoxy obviously and less time. I would chosen probably 5mm and put them into water in your warm flat for a few days. Also a thin metal band like a painters ruler helps for bending. But I don't know your climate and how wood dries up when soaked. Why I'm writing here is the extra work on the joints to extend the slats. The joints are not necessary as there are so many slats (about 20 each frame?) We have glued frames from 5mm oak in about 10 layers without joints as I don't have a cnc. We had to make shaft joints somehow if... What else came to my mind: You know RAN Sailing for sure and you will have noticed the quite similar look and size of your designs. Didn't you know about their plans or did you want to develop it from the bottom up yourself? And why this build method which takes a lot of room inside the boat later on? With the typical method RAN uses the build should be easier and faster.
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
Hi Andre! This was only one frame and I chose to go with the easiest solution. Using water here in these temperatures is difficult, it cools down and freezes before you can get it to shape etc.. And I really don't have room at home to do those things anyway. The joints there are not for structure but just to keep things on their places when clamping. The slats move quite much when bending and that is a problem when there's those joints. I have made these plans a long ago before RAN started their project. The boat structure is quite different - mostly the rigging which affects a lot to the hull and frames. They are not making frames right now but I'm sure they will do something eventually!

@@ArcticSeaCamel Ok, without space that will be difficult. But if you'd use a painters ruler or a little thicker stainless band cut to your needs in width and length this would prevent splitting quite effectively. I'd be pleased if you answered my other questions just for interest. Maybe that's something to mention in the next video or so as well?
@Hotzenplotz1
@Hotzenplotz1 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you will bend more tight radii later during the build. On deck or below. The painter rulers here in Germany are 2m by 50mm but only less than 1mm thick. Might work but I didn't try.

Keep plugging away! It can get frustrating when you're not making rapid progress on a big project. Just remember not to fixate on the end goal and instead feel gratitude and pleasure in the process itself.

I see you are throwing away timber offcuts. Have you thought about getting a wood burner and burning those offcuts to get some free heat?
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
Not really. I would not like to have fire inside my tent here. And also - the tent doesn't hold heat at all so no point there yet either. Still trying to figure out the insulation inside the tent. Just need some money I don't currently have 😅

Hi, I'm curious why you didn't do the frame in one piece, if you staggered the slats all the way around it would surely be easy enough and stronger?
@ArcticSeaCamel

Not sure what you mean. This actually is just one piece… Of course the top section (“deck beam”) will be made separately.

At the beginning of the video, you took all the "trash". I just wondering, can't you sell the wood shavings for a pet store (for hamster, rabbit,etc) or something factory who can make wood brickets? I guess that is not a big amount of money but still, could support your project with.
