Sardaukar and Fremen actually have a lot in common. Sardaukar are recruited from tribal desert dwellers from the planet Salasa Secundus, the difference being that Arrikis is a desert naturally, while Salasa Secundus used to be an Earth-like paradise world and the original home of the Padasha Emperors, untill it was nuked from orbit during a failed coup attempt

Salusa Secundus was one of the world's where the Zensunni migrated through during their persecution - the Fremen and the Sardaukar are cousins, in a way. The Sardaukar are the ones who stayed, instead of moving on, eventually to Arrakis

When I first read Dune I admired the Fremen. Now I equate them more with radical Islam, and wonder who were the good guys in those novels....?

+Aaron Typhoon from what I heard, I think that Herbert actually set Dune up to there are no real good guys especially with what happened after the fall of the Harkonnen

If you read the books you should know that the ancestors of the Fremen were the Sunnis of today. In the world of Dune however they have long ago left Islam behind.
