In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy continues the series on the French Defense with the Advance Variation. If white continues after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 with 3.e5, we enter the Advance Variation. By playing 3.e5, white is aiming for a space advantage and some attacking chances. Black can defend himself if he plays dynamically against white's pawn wedge on d4 and e5.

I just recently discovered your channel, and watched many vids on Italian Game, visualization, and now 2 of the French.. thank you so much for such clear, high quality content. I see you have much more in your playlists which I will be watching and I also look forward to seeing anything new you are working on. BTW it refreshing to see the games played out on an actual board. Great work !

Thank you very much for your comment! We are happy to hear that you like our videos with the real chess board. Hope you enjoy the rest of the French Defense series as well! There are also other playlists with other openings like the Queen's Gambit or the Ruy Lopez, so much more to study 😉. Stay tuned for the upcoming videos, where we will cover interesting chess topics!

Like many others here, I only recently discovered your channel. I'm surprised to not see more views as your content is precise, interesting and easy to understand and learn something at various experience levels. I've known basics of the French for some time now and got curious about going deeper into theory on the various lines, but content on KZbin at least was seemingly scarce - your video series on French variations has been well ahead of what else I've been able to find. Thanks for taking the time to create this content!

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 As Black 62% win As White 50% win 7% draw The more I learn these lines the better those percentages will get, I just love playing the French as Black. Couldn't have done it without you. Great channel, thanks a lot.

Love this! Found your channel by watching the videos in the Sicilian with Alex, but the lines get very sharp and complicated and I started trying the French. I now am a complete French player against e4 and haven't had problems with it since I watched the video, great explanation of all of the positional ideas, and not just giving us moves and lines of theory so we understand our openings, keep up the great work guys. Yours sincerely, a 1400

These videos on the French are the best I've seen. The ideas and positions are explained really effectively. I've played the French (as an average club player) for a while but now am beginning to understand it much more deeply.

Supernice video and explanation, thanks so much!! I've been playing the advanced variation without knowing the theory, and I often got in trouble... but watching the theory, I was also pleased that some of the solutions that I sometimes spontaneously found are part of theory. Very dense forest to navigate! After watching your video I at least have some idea of it, I'm sure my play will improve! Thanks again :)

Hello Sir, thanks for the video. It is so helpful and the content is very instructive and high quality. I plan to watch all of your video and learn from them :D. By the way, I have questions: what is the general plan for black after he succeed in destroying white's center? I do understand that the center domination is important, but what's the plan after that?

6:40 7...Nge7 8.Na3 is a stronger try for white, 8...Nf5 9.Nc2 Bb4+ 10.Kf1 Be7 11.h4 +/=. 7...Nh6 is supposed to be the equalizer to prevent Na3, though 8.Bxh6!? Qxb2 9.Nbd2 gxh6 10.0-0 Nxd4 11.Rb1 is a sharp one which needs some extra-prep to be allowed.

great! FYI, the choice of recapture at 19:25 does matter and is nontrivial: stockfish evaluates ...cxb4 as 2 points worse than ...cxd4, since with ...cxb4 white can recapture axb4 opening the A file for the rook - capturing the c pawn is recommended here

As someone who's played the French Defense over the last 5 years and is very familiar with these positions, this is so helpful looking at the reasons behind each move. For example, it's confusing how to know when to play cxd4 after Be2 and this video really explained it well.

Hi, most likely we are not going to make a video on this line in the nearest future. You can navigate to a database focusing on the games played by the experts of the French Defense like Vaganian, Kortschnoj, Bareev, Meier and others. By the way, whenever you are in doubt what to play against a particular line, check what the experts do. You should know who the experts are, though😀.

I agree. Uncomfortable to watch. Would have been great if the pieces and pawns were not so sloppily placed. I learned some things from this video, so thanks for that. But, I don't think I could watch another if the board is going to be a mess. A real shame, because that was the only negative, but it was a huge one.
