The Fruits of Mexico's Cheap Labor

In northern Mexico, farm workers who pick produce bound for US supermarkets earn as little as $7 a day. They follow the harvest, traveling between the states of Sinaloa and Baja California as internal migrants in their own country. With daycare not an option, children join their parents on the job, sometimes working in 100-degree heat.
VICE News travels to northern Mexico and heads into the fields with the laborers to see their working conditions, then meets the organizer leading the fight in the Baja town of San Quintín for better pay and conditions.

At least they don't have Payday loans they have less stress than people with Payday loans and tribal loans. At least they have fruit to eat. People with Payday and tribal loans are left destitute without a single dollar. What can a dollar buy u in California? Not even a burger cause of tax.

My parents are Mexican and they immigrated to America. My mom immigrated here because she need money so that my older brothers could get an education. My brother now is at college studying to become a doctor to help people. My parents tell me to focus on my education so that I wouldn't end up working in the fields. Thankfully I'm on the honor rolls. My dad told me when he was a kid he had to work so that he could get something on his plate.

The real issue is to largely increase payment to these people by raising food price in the USA. This will solve many problems we are facing. It is likely to reduce immigrants looking for better life because they can have a better life without moving, and reduce the prevalence of obesity in the USA since people eat less when food is more pricey, and better for the earth overall by reducing consumption, which is better for all of us. If everyone becomes a doctor, who is going to grow food for the doctors? We need more highly paid and affluent farm workers, not so many doctors who are interested in treating sick people rather than keeping people healthy.

When people claim that Hillary Clinton won the most in the more affluent regions of the West and East coasts, they often forgot one thing that most people living in these areas have high paying, not non-essential, jobs. They have the luxury to entertain with all the politically correct ideologies, while the rust belt farmers and factory workers, the ones who provide all our essential needs, are struggling to make a living, and it was these people who voted for Trump. When famine strikes, who is more important for the survival of humanity, a Google code writer who would choose Clinton or a farmer who would choose Trump?

@@makoto_walker you probably didnt understand ,but im here to help. The change in dollar in the US is heavily, 3 to 2 times more than in Mexico. Therefore when they try to file documents to pass legally to the US they pay and it is not cheap not only that but you are required to have a purpose to cross such as education,work ,have middle class amount of savinga in bank,and some understanding of the language. But for this workers to make that kind of money AND pay for education at the same time would take more than their whole life span working in the fields. One of the workers mentioned education is valid but not affordable because their lifestyle has always been to have food on the table. With that said all WE want is an opportunity the same way you are trying to work for your family and provide their needs and even lifestyle for your kids. Just think twice when your eating produce, Where it came from. Have a nice day 🖐

Honestly, I believe a huge portion of this can be attributed to NAFTA. NAFTA allowed many of these large agricultural and processing companies from the US to ship their labor to Mexico by promising economic growth to those who worked for them in Mexico. Unfortunately, the lack of regulation and the poverty in Mexico made it an excellent climate for companies to reek in their profits while shafting those who worked for them. In the US, NAFTA made wages stagnate and jobs were lost. Today, we could see this effect multiplied with the Trans Pacific Partnership which has garnered support from the Obama administration and Republicans in Congress. It would open the doors for American companies to outsource labor to nations in Southeast Asia, where similar working conditions as seen in Mexico could be replicated.

Infinite China is effective using wage slavery, pretty much anything is better than supporting that. 12 hour workdays in Vietnam are preferable to 16 hour workdays in China, right? Outside of that, it discourages companies from using China over more friendly countries to the U.S and gives us greater access to foreign markets. I'm not saying it doesn't have drawbacks, but the drawbacks are not close to negating the myriad benefits.

My parentsmigrated from guatemala to america, my dad originally went first. Back then it was less dangerous and less people were migrating, even still he recounts dead bodies from dehydration and all that junk, took a hitch and travlled the states to support my mother back at guatemala, eventually my parents reuinited settled in florida and worked their asses off. I will admit there were problems along they way, when my mom was in guatemala she had a kid named "romulo" which stands for full of strengh in spanish, ironicly he died due to sickness. While my parents reunited my father was a complete drunk even going as far as to hit my mom, luckily my mom fought back hitting him with what ever she could get her hands on. He ended up getting arrested and theor marroge was on the brink of collapse, luckily my dad became a catholic and stopped his drinking habit, becoming a fully dedicated christian, he was released and restarted his life. At forst it was bad suriving off of food stamps, and they were having another kid, luckily she surived and is currently in UF (university of florida) and about to graduate, eventually my mom had another kid, then anotjer, then another, then me.. (she had 5) we all surived and slowly but surely my dad bought as much houses and rented them to people. We finally lived in a houserather than a trailer. My dad is still a heavy catholic and vows to never drink again, my brother wants to go to UF, and my other brother wants to go to MIT, and honestly he can make it.. we all want to become something and we all went to magnet schools, and as corny as this sounds, never give up.

I spent two days in one of those fields in Sonora and despite the hard labor and low wages people seemed happy. Almost the entire community and many people all over Mexico and Central America depend on those fields. They see it as a blessing and part of their culture. This past winter was pretty cold in the area and it was particularly hard on the crop. Both the owners and workers were very worried and worked very hard to save what they could. In that particular field the owner paid around 120 pesos per basket of grapes. Some workers are able to gather well over 100 or even up to 200 baskets on a really good day. The field manager only makes around 550 pesos so if you're a good worker you can make a lot of money when compared to other jobs for people with very little or no education in Mexico. However it is hard labor and not everyone is cut out or can hack it. Therefore a lot of people do turn to other activities to make fast easy money. I savor my grapes a little more now that I know all the hard work it takes to get it to the local super market.

This issue is deeply embedded in the root of Mexican society. The reason why many indigenous communities are poor is because they have no leveled ground to earn money. Many come from their own communities, many of which are ignored by the Mexican government. They are not given accessible education so many are forced to work since they are young or they are forced to drop out to help earn money. Because of this many move to cities in search of opportunity but are refused stable jobs and help from the government, much like how it is for Native American communities in the US and the higher classes tend to be whiter because historically they were favored over the indigenous population

@ZelloisJello
@ZelloisJello 8 жыл бұрын
Definitely because of systematic racism, the indigenous peoples of mexico were wiped out by the masses because of Europeans and European ideologies. Due to indigenous cultures not resembling western cultures they were titles 'savages' and were then taken advantage of in the form of labor and more. fast forward through history and you realize that for survivals sake indigenous groups became more and more reclusive [or decided to 'mix' and abandon their culture because it was not accepted by the new westerners] and society continued to discriminate against them. discrimination against their languages and dialects as well as clothing and appearances. the whole social and economic system of mexico, while under Spanish rule, was made to benefit the Spanish only, not the indigenous Mexicans. the system was designed to keep Mexicans at a disadvantage in every way possible and it was worse for the indigenous and Africans (because Europeans really loved slavery and 'free labor'). the system worked so 'well' that even after mexico gained its independence from Spain the rich adopted the system and continued to take advantage of the poor, indigenous, blacks, etc. so to summarize, Indigenous people are generally poor because of invasion and systematic oppression

I always hesitate to read the comments because of the amount of ignorant stupidity that emanates from some people's thoughts. It's easy to judge and see the negative on everything when you sit on the other side of the wall. The real challenge is to stand up and say ENOUGH, let's change it. Why is it that it becomes so easy for people to do this? When you're sitting on the other side of the border, when you get to enjoy of free healthcare, or welfare regardless of your REAL economic situation or if you're just a lazy waste of human meat getting paid to survive. What this people have that you don't, is the will to keep working regardless of the conditions, they will still make 10 bucks and will send 9 to their families so they can eat. While you worry about the latest fashion trend or have shiny new phones. You want to raise the minimum wage because you make less than 5 bucks stocking shelfs and moving boxes. How about a double-full-time job like these humble people? Out on the sun, bare feet, picking fruit. Then it's easy to point fingers to Mexico's government because let's be honest, it's always the government who fucks the people. You might be fortunate enough to live in a first-world country, but you're still getting fucked and robbed. You just got used to it because after they take from you, you still have money to pay your stupid bills. These people don't have anything and they're still humble and proud. If you're going to sit behind your screen and bitch about how shitty their lives are and how it sucks for them. If you're going to make stupid jokes about mexicans and mock and despise whenever they try to run away from their old lives to find something better in a first world country. Despite of them being criminals or not. Just remember one thing next time you go out and eat or buy some fruits and veggies. Someone out there spend a whole day through hell so that you first-world-country, can enjoy some fucking meal. Rant over.

4:15 Sounds a lot like what happened in Central Appalachia (namely Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky) around the turn of the century. Many coal miners were paid extra for how many carts of coal they shoveled after they met their daily quota. To help earn extra money, fathers would bring their sons, sometimes as young as 7 or 8 to help them dig off the books. Coal companies would often turn a blind eye to this illegal practice as it helped maximize their profits.

My dad spent his free time as a child doing this as well to help his family survive as he got his education in Mexico to get a visa/ job in Silicon Valley to peruse his career as a technician. Before life in America he’d take side jobs to build a better life for my family. Now my father had moved from being a technician and having side jobs to being self employed and having enough to substantiate a well living life in Silicon Valley with 6 kids pushing them and I do do better and live better. I don’t want to hear anyone say all Mexicans aren’t hard working.

Yeah, making sure everyone had enough, but just enough to survive... People making their own brake liquid with shampoo, recharging batteries with homemade chargers so the deaf people would be able to use their special devices to hear and even people in the 80's getting themselves infected with HIV so that way they would be able to live in hospitals and have a better life. Castro and the majority of the politicians came of the same pile of shit.

Metal Crypt no the reason the people have to dp that IS BECAUSE AMERICA DOESN'T ALOW PEOPLE TO EXORT ANYTHING TO THEM WITH SANCTIONS. IN THE UN THEY DID A VOTE ON TO STOP THE SANCTIONS AGAINST CUBA AND EVERY COUNTRY VOTED TO STOO TJEM EXCEPT ISRRAL AND THE USA. cuba export doctors to the world. America exports bombs and drones. Cuba has free healthcare and college in America the land of freedom you can only have those two things either with extreme luck or wealth. America is the richest country in human history yet half the population lives in poverty.

***** They shouldn't destroy "things"!!! By "revolution" he (correctly) think that hose workers should seize the means of production and support their families, school their children and control their communities by those means. That is the meaning of revolution! There is MORE THEN ENOUGH wealth to go around but they are robbed by multinationals and landlords. Responsibility of "western youth" is TO START COMMUNES just like we started here on Balkans and make governments tremble because they can't keep population under control as they have to do under orders of corporate fascists. Responsibility of "western youth" is to learn about social science, to learn about Marx and Bakunin and about sick minds of Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf) and Milton Friedman. Responsibility of "western youth" is to stop calling itself "western youth" and organize itself together with us on "eastern side" AGAINST WORLD'S PLUNDERERS. As long as corporations run the world the first world countries will be deindustrialized, third world countries will be over exploited and we, all of us, will be enslaved. It will not matter if you are Communist, Anarchist, Liberal or just brainwashed slave who worship its masters in modern tongue.

***** You are reasoning to mechanically (kind of thing Lenin did.. good thing you are not on some powerful position lol). First, 10k is enough that everyone is fed but you don't get it that $ is just a moneta.. way to distribute wealth (I am talking economy 101 here.. don't wary.. you wont become zomby communist).. its flexible and allow us to say that some things are free. Like education and medical care in my country for 50 years. Resources are needed for those but it was nothing compared to what resources are spent for today. Again, I am talking here about social-democratic stuff that works now in some European countries. Now, revolution... "Seize the means of productions" is not stealing because those people would take back what is theirs in the first place. Are you telling me that US corporations have more right on those "means of productions" just because they bribed (call it what ever you want) Mexican bureaucrats? lol Sorry man, but you (corporate dudes) come in some country, bay their politicians and get the better deal then people here? YOU ARE UP FOR REVOLUTION. Its not stealing! Its justice!

My parents worked in the fields once they migrated to the USA in the early 90s and have told me these stories. Proud to say they have been granted US Citizenship since mid 90s. They are the hardest working, best money saving and decision making people I have ever met. There struggles and teachings paved our ways for me and my brother which we both carry very high working professions. These families, alike from mine are just trying to do what they can to survive and better their families. Some make it and some don’t which is a risk these families take. My best wishes go out to these families and remember to always stay humble/grateful.

Kruegerisgod I don't believe diseases is considered genocide... The United States had a 1 to 4 ratio in military campaigns against the Native American Indians... That means for every 4 Indians that were killed 1 American died... That is a better kill ratio than the Taliban or Iraqi Army.... Acts of genocide were committed by all sides including the Native American Indians... Now if you are saying that Germans committed genocide against the British and that is why there are more Germans than British you are sadly mistaken. You do realize the American military keeps count right? Most militaries do...

I'm one of the *BIGGEST* VICE fan but you can't just come up to someone and say: "So you'd rather have them safe, kept away?" without knowing a bit about their history AND experiences. I am a housekeeping services supervisor working with all kinds of amazing people; employees, clients, and some nut-jobs that come and go. I got into the Foreign Exchange market to make "quick money" but the complexity of human patterns/habits are almost unpredictable to say the least. I'd like t add that one of my biggest mentors always said: "you can give the same formula to a thousand different people and have a thousand different outcomes." That is because we ALL. ALL human beings are perfect imperfections. It's 5AM Saturday and I truly hople with the bottom of my inner sould, an infite ammount of prosperity and compassion for those who are are less fortunate.

Child labor? When I was a child I was breaking child labor laws too but here in the US. It's nice to work with grown men as a child and learn skills early on. By the time I was 14 I was a great equipment operator and by the age of 18 I was making $24 an hour. It's not a bad thing for children to learn to work, it's a bad thing when employers take advantage of them.
