Episode remastered, extended, and edited by me. This episode originally aired on September 17, 1963
This tv series tells the story of Dr. Richard Kimble, who is wrongly accused of murdering his wife. Although he maintains his innocence, he is found guilty and sentenced to death. Dr. Kimble manages to escape a prisoner transport train that was delivering him to his place of execution. Relentlessly pursued by the well-meaning police lieutenant Philip Gerard, who handled the murder case and brought Dr. Kimble to justice is convinced of his guilt. Dr. Kimble, for his part, is now on the hunt for the real killer, a one-armed man whom he saw fleeing the house when he found his wife dead coming home.
Across America, Dr. Kimble's escape leads. He never rests and cannot fully trust anyone due to his perpetual fear of being discovered. Because of this, Dr. Kimble has to constantly use new identities and never stay in any one location for too long. And in addition to the support of friends, Kimble also meets strangers who help him in his adventurous search for the one-armed man.
Extra: On the day this pilot aired, possibly the most famous election in Iranian history took place, where the secular, pro-Shah New Iran Party won 140 of the 200 seats in the Iranian Majles. Also, famed German professor of both philosophy and psychology Dr. Eduard Spranger died in Tubingen, Germany.

Convicted of killing your wife, and sentenced to death...while witnessing the actual killer who got away. Wow! Not just anyone could bring these dire circumstances to life on the small stage. David Janssen did, but he also brought the fragile nature and driven urgency of a man desperate to live long enough to catch a killer. It's 2023, I've seen all these episodes, even several times...I still come back to this show and start all over again. This puts The Fugitive in some of the rarest air a TV show is possible to exist, in my humble opinion.

I agree with you for the most part ... My favorite show growing up and I could only stay up after 10 one night a week because I was 10 years old and Tuesday was the night ... I binge watched a lot of episodes as an adult and it doing so it does seem that a man on the run trying to stay incognito sure got in a lot of other peoples affairs but it had to have a story line ... He saved Gerard multiple times and met and interacted with is son and then later in a 2 part episode Gerard's wife ... Kimble went to a baseball game in one episode where the girl next to him was kidnapped and of course he was held for questioning; what are the odds ... Kimble was incredibly unlucky in the first 3 parts and incredibly lucky in part IV ... Don't get me wrong, for it's time it was the best show on the air and David Janssen was absolutely divine. I would have preferred a different ending because even at 14 I thought the one armed man had no place to go when he climbed that water tower ... I would have much rather seen him confess in a short court sequence and then pan to Gerard's face afterwards ... The show was driven by intense drama so it had to be a confession to Kimble and then a rifle shot from Gerard ... I believe in season 3 episode Wife Killer Fred Johnson does nod his head yes when Kimble asks if he killed his wife. I was always puzzled why Kimble left in that episode because he had the one armed man, a confession and he almost died in a car accident so he wasn't going anywhere.

@@olivia362436 The Series Finale for the I963 story is not indicative of the original vision that was intended: As it was indicated around the time that David Janssen wanted to finish up with Season 04 due to physical and mental fatigue from the Thirty Episode a Season filming schedule, The Fugitive was supposed to get a Season 05 that would've heavily expanded the storyline and filming into Hawaii, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, which at that point I feel we would've probably gotten virtually the same or a slightly reworked variant of "Judgement Day: Part 0I and 02" when the time came to end the series proper in Fiscal Year I968; it truly makes me wonder if there are Thirty more episodes that we never got but were fully written or at least Blueprinted, I can only imagine how much more the developers could've done with the storyline and improve Richard Kimble's Quality of Life as Season 04 already made it certain that the colour was finally coming back to his life after being in a literal Gray Area for Ninety episodes and using Colour Film as a storytelling mechanic truly did help flush out the impact of certain episodes during ABC's first full year of its "In Colour" campaign that there is a lot of wonder as to how the Tropical Islands would've aided that standpoint in Season 05. I do feel bad that Vera Miles was not brought back for "Judgement Day: Part 02", her character Monica Welles would've been perfect to have there at the end as a bit of a Full Circle moment in the regard that the first woman that Kimble helped out while on the run and who truly cared about his future would be there to lovingly congratulate him for never giving up and remaining true to his original ambition; even more surprising is when we discovered that this episode was also set to be the Backdoor Pilot for Fox's then~upcoming series Judd for the Defense, which Vera would get to have a guest role in, Quinn Martin slammed down the concept of JftD being a sequel series or spin~off to The Fugitive because his team wouldn't be working on it and knowing this core detail now I do feel that ABC pretty much bombed in what it could do during Fiscal Year I968 and '69, both this and The Invaders would not make it out of the decade with a third season and in Retrospective Review it makes me wonder what could've happened had things been different on this front. There is a lot more that I could discuss about all of this, but I will definitely reserve certain subjects for another time; simple fact of the matter though is that the reason why The Fugitive (I963) ended in the way it did was because akin to Sonic the Hedgehog 02 (MD)'s original Time Travel plot concept the project was cut short for time midway into its development and there was simply not enough resources to justify the cost of fulfilling the remaining Thirty episodes that we never got, the issue of Time Costs from the network's point of view is part of what influenced my ambition to produce an entire series before ever airing it to the masses and when we do we would broadcast it under the Continuous template that was made popular for Anime in Japan during the '90s (One Episode a Week until the series is over), and with a sequel series concept for The Fugitive being part of that ambition on my end (heck, MeTV does the same thing for the original series, showing an episode every Late Sunday/Early Monday at 02:00 A (Eastern); "Judgement Day: Part 0I and 02" will be airing tonight and on August 04 and 05, respectively) I feel many film groups and networks will follow suit if it proves effective and successful for heightening overall community impact and viewership retention.

Although I saw most of this supreme series in the late 60s & early 70s, the pilot wasn't one of them. And so it has given me great pleasure to view it now for the very first time, in a long time. Many thanks for uploading this & I shall eventually be sharing this one on Facebook to bring it to the attention of those keen fans of the great actor's work who might otherwise miss it. It seems hardly possible that David Janssen could have been gone over 42 years, but he has, & should serve as a stark reminder that life is short & death is long. If anyone had suggested to Janssen during the making of this that he'd have less than 17 years to live he'd no doubt have laughed; unfortunately, it was no laughing matter. RIP DJ.

To be accurate: This isn't the 'pilot'. It's episode 14 and episode 1 of the series as aired. Episode 1, which begins 'in medias res', did air on Sept. 17, 1963. Episode 14, which presented the backstory of the series, aired on Christmas Eve, 1963. A 'pilot' (as the term was used then) was a test episode whose purpose was to sell the concept to the network. Pilots were often shorter, without music, and with a trial cast that might be changed later. In some cases they were reworked to become an episode of the series. Rarely were they the first episode aired, as the network would usually choose a stronger episode as its initial exposure to the public.

One thing I like about the series is how it shows the narrow-minded fanatisism of bureaucrats with their stupidity and perseverence, ie Philip Gerard, the fanatical policeman who cannot admit that the law could condemn innocent persons. I think Emerson or Thoreau said A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, beloved of petty statesmen. Speak what you think now... I think this is found as well among the sorts of politicians we see in some administrations of state and national governments.

Well KuznVinny that's a good point - but I feel the producers and writers etc saw a long road ahead ideally so Kimball was meant to have adventures while on the run, to get involved in peoples lives, in dilemmas etc and then escape and move on just as he was about to lose his secret. Its become a staple of US drama - the wanderer who moves from town to town and is trying so hard to find his resting place, or his goal. This applied to Kung Fu and also to the Hulk. Also to Branded. Maybe others too that I cant quite recall just here. For some reason, maybe its "frontier mentality" but it seems to be a big part of ongoing US drama series.

Arizona Republic, Phoenix, AZ, July 4, 1963; Diane Brewster: 'Demise' Provides Unique TV Role, By Joseph Finnegan; HOLLYWOOD (UPI)--Actress Diane Brewster has one of the unique roles on television. She's a corpse. The pretty Miss Brewster doesn't start out that way. In fact, she's very much alive. But not for long. Diane's demise is necessary for a new ABC-TV series, "The Fugitive." It's about a man suspected of murdering his wife. He spends the rest of next fall's video season running from cops. THAT'S where Miss Brewster comes in. She's the wife. But as we said, not for long. David Janssen plays her husband, a doctor accused of her murder. This is a switch for David, best remembered for his video portrayal of "Richard Diamond," a private eye who chased crooks all over the nation's television screens for several years. Janssen spends the first two segments of "Fugitive" eluding the law. In the third, we see why. "WE HAVE an argument, and he leaves the house," explains Diane, who appears in the third episode as Janssen recalls the murder scene. "When he returns to the house, he sees a one-armed man running down the lawn and finds me dead on the living room floor." That's the last police see of Janssen, and we see of Miss Brewster. From then on, she'll be casually referred to as a murder victim, the only dead character to appear on a regular weekly television series. Such notoriety will make Miss Brewster's character the most talked about corpse since Lenin's. THIS IS a good part," said Diane, who doesn't want to work every week in television. "As far as the Idea of not being in the show every week is concerned, it hadn't occurred to me that I won't be able to. But I haven't worked very much since about 1961 and I don't want to. My husband and I have two children. If work is about every two or three months, that's adequate." Once Miss Brewster is disposed of, "Fugitive" writers must arrange for Janssen to escape the law every week. Because he's on the run, David gives up his medical practice and takes odd jobs, always looking over his shoulder. If David is ever caught, his show ends. But ABC-TV hopes that favorable audiences and lax law enforcement on television might keep David running for years. As for that one-armed man, keep your eye on him. He's the reason David is running.

I think they used some Twilight Zone music in this episode. Also, I read that Quinn Martin was a nice guy! He was a demanding producer, but (apparently) he valued the people who worked for him and those people valued him. I love hearing about good people succeeding through talent and hard work.

This is NOT the “Extended Pilot.” All someone has done is taken the flashback scenes filmed in June 1963 for “The Girl from Little Egypt” and tacked them onto the beginning scenes shot half a year earlier (in late Nov. & Dec. 1962) for the actual pilot, “Fear in a Desert City.” No hospital, courtroom, or extended escape scenes were filmed until after QM knew that ABC had approved the pilot to proceed for production as a new series.

Thanks. I thought I was going to watch from the start on CBS Justice UK, thought I'd missed a pilot. Doesn't really matter as long as everyone knows what it is: I was 6 or 7 when episode 1 was aired, so it doesn't really matter. :-) I thought it was a reconstructed 'pilot' from missing scenes, as I thought S1E1 was missing a 'beginning', so seeing the 'stolen' clips later on will be fun! The actual Ep 1 looks very modern & fresh: looking forward to the series, both as nostalgia and appreciative of timeless good drama. :-)

There was never an extended pilot & there was never any footage of Gerard in the Kimble home. The quick shots of Coroner personnel removing a body are NOT from any Fugitive episode. It’s deceiving to have inserted that footage. Also, the footage of Barry & (Untouchables) actor Paul Picerni are really from episode 19, “Search in a Windy City.” You can see for yourself in the below link to that episode (just after the 40-min. mark where Gerard is interrogating the drunken wife of columnist Mike Decker in their apartment): archive.org/details/The_Fugitive_Series/The+Fugitive+TV+Series+(1963-1967)+-+Season+1/The+Fugitive+-+1x19+-+Search+in+a+Windy+City.avi

Knight rider, 6 million dollar man, Buck Rodgers. Magnum PI Battlestar Galactica just to name a few of his most popular shows. Thanks for uploading this. Nice work. Over the years, I'd seen random episodes of this show, and loved what I saw. But until just now, I'd never seen this pilot. And it did not disappoint. Janssen was brilliant in this role, as was everyone else, including Brian Keith. Terrific writing, directing and photography as well. I need to pick up the DVD set I think, but am unsure as to which set. Apparently every release had problems according to Amazon reviews (wrong music used, defective disks, etc.). Does anyone have a recommendation? The least expensive set is listed at about $45. Would that one be okay? The next step up appears to be $120, which is a bit high for me, and that set apparently had its own problems. Can anyone tell me their buying experiences? I'd appreciate it.

The show was well written and acted, but its popularity was based on presenting viewers with the ultimate fantasy: being able to run away and hide from the responsibilities and tedium of daily life. Richard Kimble no longer had to pay a mortgage, answer to superiors, face his job pressures or put his family first in all his decisions. Not that he would have chosen this scenario, but since it was thrust on him, he did not have to feel guilt about being truly free.

There was a time when they were going to catch the one armed guy but fans wrote in and said NO! NOT YET! So it continued awhile longer. I'm sorry, but this is absolutely horrendous. You've done a very skillful job of butchering television history. The story was told the way it was originally told, for a reason. You've changed all that. Sadly, people watching this video of yours won't know how you've rearranged scenes and episodes, and removed very masterful narration that helped make the series what it was. Just because technology makes it possible to do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD. What you've done is an absolute disgrace, and disrespectful of the original work. I do hope you'll consider re-working this, to restore and respect the original work.
