I think a retcon wouldn't be as scary of an idea as people think. Halloween series has three timelines (as well as a remake timeline) and each version of the story meeting varied levels of financial success. If applied the alien franchise, a retcon of the story after the second movie wouldn't diminish the parts being retold, it would just create another timeline to ebjoy alongisde the original.

Fox and Brandywine's gross mishandling of the Alien franchise is beyond frustrating. It's like they forgot that the success of the first two films was significantly because at the time, Scott and then Cameron were very fresh and new directors in the industry. And while Alien 3 was divisive, Fincher had been put on a lot of strings by Brandywine - had he been given the same level of freedom as Scott and Cameron, I'd argue whatever Alien 3 he would make would have been better received. The studios should have banked on Blomkamp. Plain and simple. Biehn wanted to come back, Weaver wanted to come back. Don't get me wrong, I will respect your opinion on how this changes things, but I'd argue that the existence of Alien 3 and Resurrection already changed up a lot of the "canon". I don't see the harm of it happening again. Besides a lot of what the RPG was bringing in came from the canon that had previously been "lost" because of the Alien 3 that came about. The UPP for example - that was from Gibson's script, which as you know was scrapped almost immediately thanks to the airheads in Fox.

Actually, a movie like this doesn't have to "do away with" the established canon of all the previous films, comics, games, etc. But the solution is in proposing a multiverse of storytelling where several different continuities could exist and be explored and sometimes even cross paths, similar to Marvel's Spider-Verse.

While an interesting idea, the trouble is more with how it is meant to be a "grounded" sci-fi franchise if you ignore the existence of the fourth film. That being said, it could still be possible to pull off if handled carefully.

No here is how you fix the continuity and transition. Ripley wakes up from her bed . She hears the shower water running. Ripley goes to the shower and sees a naked unscarred Hicks. Hicks, smiles and says sup, babe. That fixes that. Now let's scrape Covenant.

I find these non-canons very interesting as well. Rather than side dishing them, I believe they brainstorm what the canon could be, iron sharpen iron evolution- and possibly a rectifiable synthesis.I have some of these books mentioned in the video and I’m sure writers can perceive how they may be remedied into the lore; without destroying the canon. Which is why there are great potential from the franchise, even in the challenges they develop, that have not yet been explored.

Alien 3 wrote itself with the family unit of Ripley/Hicks/Newt. Fincher committed the cardinal sin of pointlessly killing good characters with a lot of potential. Red Harvest was the film that should have been made all along. I would gladly see 3, 4 and Scott's robot-centric films flushed.

The reason I am asking is nothing is really jumping out at me as heavily reliant on 3 and 4 as source, barring frequent but hyper-brief mentions of Fiori 161 in vague terms and a singular novel sequel to Resurrection? The pinnacle of EU material to me, the original few Dark Horse Comics as well as the bulk of the best received books are themselves invalidated already by 3 and 4, or ignore them. Fire and Stone coming to mind for the latter. So yeah, obviously it's subjective but I respect your opinion and bona fides here, so genuinely wondering what of great value would be undone by excommunication of 3-4 vs what could potentially be gained? (seeing Hicks, Newt and Ripley together again, re-direction of design and art to Sid Mead and Giger Biomech again, potentially being able to draw on the original dark horse comics and alien isolation etc). Your re-working of the prequel era material in your expanded universe fanfic series is so much more on target than anything after Aliens that I find myself a bit surprised you have such dedication to 3-4 and even prometheus/covenant (mean that as a huge compliment btw).

after aliens colonial marines I am reluctant to embrace any retcons of the events from aliens to alien 3. Colonial Marines utterly and completely shat that bed and made it difficult to step into. I believe that this alien movie could still be made in some way it may not be happening now but it could there is still a story to tell after Aliens with Ripley Hicks and Newt taking on the Aliens one last time and having the weyland yutani group getting their hands on an alien specimen with more marines dispatched this could be an all out war with newt taking revenge on the Aliens for her family as she becomes the new protagonist if Neil bloomkamp gets to return to this project then that's great if someone else does it that's fine to as long as they make it like the first 2 aliens movies I'd love to see this movie

I agree, I dislike the idea of disavowing half of the original Alien films in the Quadrilogy. I'd far prefer an Alien 5 film that continues the story in some form instead of ignoring or rendering them non-canon. The more inclusive a future film, the better for various reasons. Bring back Sigourney and give her a great film to wrap up her character arc by all means, but not at the expensive of removing half of her prior onscreen appearances.

Watching this in 2023, I can’t help but think to myself (and subsequently want to put it out into the universe/fandom): Now coming up on 6 years after the release of Alien: Covenant, the second failed film in the franchise by Sir Ridley Scott, and nothing else on the horizon except for yet another streaming series in a world of streaming series (probably containing a bunch of woke, socio-politics, and AI/minority simile that no one cared for in the two aforementioned failed filmed)…why not give the fans something that WAS and quite arguably still would be exciting after these almost 8 years -that the studio (and Ridely) shelved in order to make way for their now-failed projects? Why not give the fans what they clearly want? Why is it not an option for the studio to make another movie simply because they didn’t like the reception of the last two films, which only came about by denying THIS tremendous option of a movie from being made? If they made this movie, the fear of a failed movie franchise would be a non-issue. It’s a shoe in as long as they trust the proven director they hired and just stay the hell out of the way. I don’t get it.

@@ProjectACHERON they definitely broke with convention on the originals. Gender roles, design, sexual themes that made the men in the audience uncomfortable. The notion of targeting the men and making them squirm in their theatre chairs at the thought of homosexual rape without them consciously realizing it was genius for wanting to illicit a fear response. Definitely progressive. But the crap going on now has no subtlety. At the detriment of the movie, it’s always shoehorned in or outright shoved down the audiences throat (pun intended) in such a blatant, diminutive way that it really detracts from what the alien franchise was first built on. No one wants to be beaten over the head with the current sociopolitical trends when they go to the movies to escape the world for a bit. This stuff isn’t artful. It isn’t tasteful. It isn’t good. I just wish they would go with what they KNOW would be a success instead of shelving it because the seniority says so in order to make way for what clearly isn’t working.

I'm glad this movie never panned out, not only because of the concept art, but because I'm not impressed with Blokamp's work. Sometimes a franchise just doesn't know where to go, i.e. the Highlander series should've gone backwards, not forwards. The Alien series should go interstitially, like the River of Pain Series.

I think the Alien universe has done really well just going where the story requires. Aliens Phalanx was great and it was way into the future. Alien: defiance and Isolation were fantastic and they were inbetween Alien and Aliens, and Alien: The Roleplaying Game is set after Alien 3 and its probably holds some of the best and most interesting canon material and stories and a source book to ever release in the current Alien Canon.

whether you love or hate Promethus and Covenant (I personally enjoy both) its clear based on similar plots for other similar films in recent memory, this film would not be a "masterpiece" . more likely than not this film would've boiled down to some new, although likely derivative ideas and most of the film would've been Jangling keys and "I KNOW THAT" moments. it would've been a new terminator Dark fate and Im so happy Alien was spared from having a garbage member berries fest of a movie. not to mention Neil Blomdkamp isn't the best director. I love his Oats stuff but, in recent memory his films have seen a drop in quality. Personally, I'd like a soft retcon of the 3rd film as it did have some glaring inconsistencies for continuity, and to throw the fourth film in the trash where it belongs to let it burn, any of the elements in the 4th film had already existed within the comics and were done arguably better. If they did a retcon, I'd hope they would handle it like how the Alien RPG handled the expansive lore, it kept nearly everything while carefully cleaning up the continuity errors, the only one it full-on didn't use was Resurrection, and boy am I thankful for that.

I hoped Alien 4 would wave off Alien 3 as a dream in hypersleep. I hated it that much for killing off everyone that survived in Aliens. There hasn't been a great Aliens movie since 1986. That's nearly 40 years. That's pathetic. Now Ridley Scott fucked up the canon for his albino space Jesus idea. The Alien in the Alien franchise isn't even an alien anymore! They're just our grandkids. I don't want to see Alien go further down the same dark path as Terminator. If there's nothing great or exciting, just let it die. Every shitty movie hurts the other movies & franchise. Alien III the audio book was good. Let it play out that way. It's sad when comics and audio books are so much better than the big budget movies

I personally wouldn't have given one damm if Alien3 and Alien Resurrection were wiped out completely. Alien3 is the worst sequel of all time dispite being a decent film on it's own. And Alien Resurrection is not only the worst movie in the A L I E N franchise but also one of worst movies in film history.

The latter Aliens SUCK and Covenant was a damn joke of a movie.... Blomkamph would have done such an AWESOME job based on all his cool, fun, small projects he has released on KZbin (he has so much passion and people like Sigourney Weaver herself wanted to see this happen) but noooooooo....They went with the stupid film that ruined everything first. Good job Hollywood...one stupid decision after another. FAIL

Final nail in the coffin of Blomkamps 5 is the news of Walter Hill and David Giler's Alien 5 treatment they have shown to Sigourney Weaver as well as Sir Ridley Scott still pushing for the third prequel. Odds of Blomkamp's 5 happening are slim to nil. That being said I've been hoping it'd be adapted into a comic along side Vincent Ward's Alien 3, David Twohy's Alien 3 (so many Alien 3's lol) and Alien: Engineers.

Walter hills alien 5 will likely fail too, as it should. It wants everything to be a dream. My god can you get any worse a story device than that. Oh and the characters awoke and it was allllll a dreammmmmm. I’m an advocate releasing the final and third prequel film closing that chapter of the story and then moving on to do a new trilogy or standalone with new characters or characters from the expanded Universe.

I have to agree with you. What I want the most is for Ridley to make his third prequel as well. David deserves to have his story completed. I love Ripley and totally Agree with Sigourney Weaver that she deserves a rest. No need for retcon of earlier sequels. No need for it was all a dream B.s. If there is one thing I've learned from the past decades legacy sequel obsession it's that these beloved characters need to be left alone.

My opinion is alien3 deviated from canon. I guess we can all pick and choose. That being said, I like dark horses canon... Blomkamp just stretches it out by a couple more decades, considering the actors ages today. Then takes some artistic liberties. I wanted to see blomkamp's movie. I was not expecting much or excited for the prequals and was still disappointed.

I’m glad its been laid to rest and i hope for another sequel in to the future that moves away from Ripley and really starts build a larger cinematic body around a new character or characters after the events of aliens 3

Thank God it failed. I hate how people worship Blomkamp, he only made one good movie wich is District-9, all of his other movies were crap garbage. And the concept shows a resemblance to Terminator Dark Fate. That movie also deleted T3 and all the other T movies and continued the second movie, just like Red Harvest would have done with Aliens. And we have seen what a piece of junk Dark Fate turned out to be. That movie finally killed the Terminator franchise. So yeah, I'm really glad that Blomkamp's Alien5 failed, because I think it would have been a Terminator Dark Fate level cringefest. All I want now is Ridley Scott to give a worthy ending to the Prometheus storyline. He really needs to make a third movie, where the circle finally comes together with the Space Jockey we have seen in the first move and everything. The ending of Alien Covenant was briliant, because it left the story completely open to new, interesting ideas.

I saw _Resurrection_ in the theater and I removed it from cannon the moment it was over. Let’s hire a French director that doesn’t speak English! Yeah, great idea! A graphic novel would make almost everyone happy, for the most part, as you say. Speak for yourself. And just because Alien5 would retcon the canon of 3 & 4 doesn’t mean they won’t still exist and you can’t still watch them and enjoy them. When I watch the prequels I usually compartmentalize them into their own thing and not view them as direct prequels. I’m not a huge fan of what Ridley did with the Engineers, but I just separate it and enjoy those films for what they are and I’m glad they were made. My brain is capable of that, as is anyone else’s.

I’m talking about the canon otherwise known as Continuity of Alien as in the continuing of a story without into interrupts from projects that shit over the hard work done by other before them in their own pursuit. It’s always been pieced together by endless writers working disparately. Alien continuity is a huge mess. I couldn’t care less if the novels, all of which I’ve read, are retconned by an Alien 5 that ignores Alien 3 & 4. Hell, a bunch of the novels and comics contradict their own canon anyway. Did those books “shit all over” the novels that preceeded them by doing their own thing? No they didn’t. It’s all there for you to enjoy, regardless of how you choose to link it up in your mind.

Okay you obviously don’t know much about what is going on behind the scenes, Scott Sigler, Alex White, Western Orsche, Andrew Gaska, They are all novel writers, comic book creators and especially the people working on Alien: The RPG are all in talks constantly with one another to make the universe cohesive/collaborative and have a proper continuity. If you paid any attention at all to what is going on in the last 5-7 years of released alien expanded universe content its writers and creators working tirelessly to make up for the wrong doings of the films but also keep everything working and not shit on others work.
