My high school geography teacher brought in Durian for the class. I don't remember the exact smell, but I definitely remember it being strong. I think sewage may have been accurate, but I vaguely remember it being more like B.O. I was the first willing to eat some and I remember it just tastes like onions. The natural food-grade dye that comes from bugs, carmine, has been declared food-safe for ages and I think the only way it can ever go away is by state-enforced vegetarianism.

@@erasedkarma the reason why people say it smells like raw sewage is like how some people cant eat cilantro because it tastes a bitter mint (Soap/Detergent) What they smell is something that stinks, someone will comment that rain in a city smells like a wet dog, but what exactly a wet dog smells like is a layer of dirt and dust that has moistened. What Durian smells like (to me) is smelly spoiled milk with a hint of salted meat, because raw sewage has various chemicals and a ton of ammonia. If someone WANTS to say its raw sewage, But they actually smelled one and ate it, i will not criticize them, if someone claims it smells like raw sewage and never actually smelled one, i will tell the joke everytime.

Durian smells like rotting fruit. A little like a compost bin full of fruit/onion trimmings. I don't personally think it smells that horrible, but good god does the smell get everywhere and stay there. If i crack one open in my house it would smell like durian for like 2 days.
