Mario Party Superstars is another Mario Party coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year, but I couldn't help but find some parallels between it and another Mario Party not too long ago. Let's talk some Mario Party.

It really is. We have been dying for another paper mario game with similar gameplay to the thousand year door, but it's like they don't care anymore, well then I don't care either. I have never bought any new paper mario game after super paper mario and I am still not buying one now.

I really do hope that they can get the skill/creativity to embrace what makes the first 8 Mario Party games and especially Mario Party DS truly special. What I find very special about those games is that they embraced some sort of theme that makes each game feel very distinct and like actually purchasing a new board game. I want modern Mario Party to embrace the crazy stuff past games have been able to do.

I played a round earlier today and yeah it's broken af An AI opponent got 2 stars in a turn *twice* thanks to having allies while I got dead last because I was never able to keep up with everyone else's movement.

I wished they have the Custom Dice return though, Mario Party 7 have character specific elements too, so it isn't too off-form - just remove the Ally system (which not only can be OP in terms of movement, but also diminishes strategy to character dice as you won't predict where to go), and add riskier stuff to big number dice (like -1 Star if you have a 20 movement face).

Mario Party 1 getting the short end of the stick makes sense. Most its mini games either were the stick spining ones that Nintendo has learned to avoid OR just have better versions in 2.

Also MP1 had a chunk of minigames that worked differently compared to what they do now. Examples include Bash n Cash, where it used the character's actual coin amount, and Running of the Bulb and Key-Pa Way which were an everyone wins or no one thing. While it woul be cool for those and a few others to come back, they'd have to completley rework them to fit this streamlined style.

No, they were very few mini games that forced ye to rotate the control stick: Pedal Power Tug-or-War Paddle Battle I got that burn with Tug-or-War, still remember the feeling, I hate that gane. Overall Mario Party 1 to 5 have the best mini games of all time.

Oh yeah, that was something pretty cool, like how the shops also had custom appearances based on the boards in 2, 6, 7, and 8, that would definitely make the boards more lively, at least the Boo places are actually different depending on the board, being a metal plate in Space Land, and a more traditional tombstone in Woody’s Woods

@@16BitKamek Yeah, I've seen it said, "it'd take too long, they're trying to speed up the pace" but I don't feel that justifies their being less character to the items, especially compared to neat stuff like the MP3 rare items. Plus, there's ways around it - you could make it as fast and instant as a smash ball cutscene, or simply allow you to skip it. But I do want to say Peach's cake look amazing. It's even more charming than the original, and I say that as someone obsessed with those retro pre-rendered backgrounds. And all the minigames I've seen look infinitely better. All I can hope now is that they add costumes and more classic boards.

Glad that Nintendo has listened to the criticisms that people had with the past games and (for the most part) fixed them with super, and now with this game their going even further with giving us more of what we want out of the series. Good job Nintendo! 👍🏻

I'll always have a soft spot for Top 100, I had a lot of fun with the single player in that game. Superstars is almost guaranteed to be an objectively better game, but I'll always like Top 100, it came at a bit of a darker time in my life and it brought me some joy. In short, I appreciate Top 100 for what it was rather than hate it for what it wasn't.

That's the way it's supposed to look when you're working with a more modern system. It's a proper return to form, and it looks really polished. I find it kind of funny because the texture of Peach's birthday cake looks so smooth and moist, that I really thought the characters were going to fall right into it, lol. That's just very good design.

@@johnbakasmoothhotchocolate well of course, but I typically find myself in games not really paying that much attention to the detail some games have, and felt like it's a good idea to practice appreciating the small stuff, I realize a major mindset that has ruined my relationship with video games a lot is the mindset of "more more more" and never stop to appreciate the stuff we have, like every game has a flaw or many flaws but if we never take a moment to appreciate the small stuff in games we'll never appreciate any game because we only see what we want and that's perfection when the small stuff can be some of the most humbling thing ever, like I started playing Skyrim more and I notice that by actually acknowledging and paying attention to the scenery I found myself appreciating the game more and more. Always take a moment to appreciate the small stuff, that's what I'm trying to practice doing now

For me, I enjoy the music in games: Super Monkey Ball 2's Space Colony track is freakin' tight. lol. But you're right in what you said because even the small stuff took time and care by those who were involved in making the game. I used to just play my games and that was it. But now that I'm older, I revisit the games that I haven't played in a long time, and I'm like, "Oh shit! I never realized how beautiful the landscape looks, or how great the music sounds." It happens though, but it just teaches us to not take things for granted.

I liked the character specific die each character had alot in super but if I had to choose I'd take the 1-10 dice block over them. Maybe they'll make a return in the next mario party as a special item like mario party 6 did with characters having special orbs they could use.

You need to remember that Mario Party 1-8 with the DS handheld game as well they wanted to change it up as the audience was deflating after a while. They were experimenting with new ideas to grab a new audience that shows they try to innovate Mario Party. It was to avoid being stale at the time. People were growing up and who knows how many still cared for the series. Yes, it didn’t work out after a while but they were trying to capture a new market. They saw that new ideas were selling well believe it or not so they kept it fresh as a result. The Switch is obviously about returning to the old days, but the Wii, Wii U and 3ds were all about pushing new direction and as a theme how the consoles push their gimmicks. I don’t know I just think it was done purposely to capture the design of the console controllers as well. Switch is now pushing more traditional and they realise with how the joycons feedback has been, they want to keep people happy and traditional. I think it’s a blessing in disguise.

What I really like about this game is that they don't act like the old boards are golden gooses that you cannot change. Peach's Birthday Cake has items now. You're probably tried to say "Of course, it always had." But that's not the case. The only irk I've with the game so far are Board Events. Watch the Treehouse Gameplay Segment about Space Land in particular. There were several instances in which an event was going on and we _should_ have seen uninvolved Characters in the Background, yet we didn't. I really hope they iron this out until release, as that bothered me more than I would ever have expected.

Hopefully this will remind NDCube what makes an indisputably good Mario Party and the next fully new entry will base itself off of this. I actually liked bowser mode, although I wonder what it would be like in a normal MP. My idea would be that each player spreads out as bowser tries to catch them and kill them before they buy a star from each star space (in the order they appear). Bowser gets his items for free in the form of a MP1 dice at random turn 1, MP3's baby bowser bags turn 2, and a bowser bomb turn 5 and then repeat. Bowser deals damage in single player bowser minigames and duels while most minigames are 1v3s and multi player bowser minigames. Bowser doesn't use coins (rather winning minigames allows him to steal others coins) though he does have special effects when passing by stuff. Passing by the star moves it, passing by baby bowser triples the fee of anyone who passes by, passing the bank takes out 25% of the jackpot (except in Bowser Land where he instead increases the loan value by 33%, passing the shop disables it for 2 turns (except the one shop in bowser land, in which case he increases prices by 60%). Many items work different with bowser and anything that would cause a player to lose a star would have them lose HP instead (chance time is especially interesting). Certain items may work different etc. Don't ask me why I wrote an entire paragraph on this stupid idea. I have no idea

It's too complex, IMO, though I think it's awesome you came up with something like this. The main thing I'd change is the objective, which isn't really that clear. Bowser can win by depleting everyone's hearts, but how do the others win? There was this video where someone modded MP6 so that Bowser's always active in Clockwork Castle and the players only have to make sure they don't lose their pre-set Stars. What if everyone is in a team that has pre-obtained Stars equal to the number of turns, and if they keep their Stars 'til the end, they win? Meanwhile, Bowser could try to deplete their Stars in the same vein as MP6 and sabotaging their coins so that they don't buy any more Stars. It's kinda the same concept, but simplified and with a clear goal.

@@Mr2Secs oh my bad the others win if they get 7 stars a.k.a. one from each star space (default setting, higher settings will have 2 or even 3 stars per star space traded in for higher HP). Though if a star is stolen by bowser then it returns to one of the used up star spaces. Only 1 star is active at a time but it will highlight the spots where a star is still possible. Oh I have wanted a survival board for ages, though I always thought of it as a competitive things like last one to run out of stars wins. It would have a lot of dangerous happenings, lots of duels, more battle minigames, a good number of boos, slightly more chance time than usual (which is really funny with only 2 people alive, probably will remove swap stars), many bowser spaces (see below) and even a couple of Giga Bowser spaces (also see below). In addition a bowser event happens at the end of every 5 turns (again see below). There are even items that can protect you from bowser or other charms *see charms below. Note that it will say turn count, this is defined by expected turn count, anything after that is considered overtime. If any 2 players die at the same event, their position is determined by their position before the event began. Bowser Space: there are 5 pairs of options, one option from each pair will show up on the roulette which is semi-timable in that the you have increased odds of landing on the one you hit and ones close to it but it's still luck based. Each Player Loses 1 Star // Each Player loses half coins Multiplayer Bower Minigame // Single Player Bowser Minigame. ALWAYS FOR 1 STAR. Target Opponet Loses 1 Star // Bowser hands you coins (dependent on # of stars you have, the less the more you gives. In the case you have only 1 star, this will say star instead) Bowser Revolution // Rando Revolution (it instead takes all the money and splits it randomly) Triple Threat (he takes 1 star, 30 coins, and 2 of your items at random) // Double Trouble (he takes 2 stars, 60 coins, OR 4 of your items. Which bad thing is random) More details about individual bowser events below: Giga Bowser events are always 1 of 3: Star Battle Arena (takes 1,2, or 3 stars from each player if they can afford it and will give first 70% and second 25% each rounded down, remainder goes to bowser). Nightmare Board (makes the board worse than normal for 3 turns, will extend time if this option is picked during Nightmare by a turn, during overtime this turns all non-bowser spaces into bowser spaces or all bowser spaces into giga bowser spaces for 1 turn), or *Zero Flame Bowser Game* (bowser minigame except only 1 loser that loses massively, during the first 5 turns it's only a triple threat, on any other time during the first third, it's 2 stars, during the middle, 3 stars and an item at random, during the final third it takes half your stars (rounded down) then takes another star for good measure, during last 5 turns it cuts you down to a single star, a single coin and a single item, finally during overtime it kills you outright). Bowser when he appears on turn 5 will give each player a random bowser item as a present. On any other multiple of 5 during the first 3rd of the game, he will do a bowser minigame, until the final third, he will take a star from each player, and during the final third, he will trigger a giga bowser event (as these aren't player specific), as the last 5 turn event rolls around he gives a star from first place to last (among the living) and after the final turn, he turns the board into perma nightmare mode. Any Bowser events after that have him burning out stars from each player until 1 dies. If you have 5 or fewer coins when he takes half, he doubles it instead. If you are flat broke he gives you a luck charm if you have no charm, a lucky block card (although they do work different) if you have a charm but aren't full on items, and a single coin if you are full on items. If bowser gives you coins when you are flat broke, he will double it. If he gives you coins and you are in first, he will half it. I wrote an entire paragraph about potluck then realized I cut that one cause the first 2 options do the job nicely. If he Bowser Revolutions and each player already has the same number of coins or rando revolutions when no one has any coins, he'll item revolution instead (even if everyone has the same number of items, this will be an item shuffle). If he tries to revolutionize items but there are none or every item is the same and each player has the same number, he will give each player a wrath charm (overriding their current one). If you get triple threat and have 2-14 coins, he will override your charm with a poverty charm and if you have no items, he will place a random bowser item into your inventory (some good, some bad, some new). If double trouble lands on something you can't pay (including 2 stars), he will respin. If you can't pay any of them, he gives you a Bowser charm.

This is honestly the game that I'm most excited for from Nintendo's E3 direct. Although, it's kinda bittersweet thinking about it. This is the mario party game I've been wanting for ages now, old fashioned large, slightly complex/imaginative maps with old star, coin, and dice mechanics, decent minigames(although I can't really complain too much about any mario party's selection of minigames so this one is kind of a moot point), all with online capabilities so I can actually play with friends across the country and globe. But, sadly, this is probably as close as we're ever going to get to a full on remake of the first three games together in a package deal with online play, something I've been dying for while expecting to never receive. The fact that we're only getting five maps across three games is also something I'm not too happy about, I know it might be a bit much to ask, but I was really hoping for more like 3 or 4 maps from every game. I guess I can only hope that they release more maps in the future, but for now I'm sorry MP3 fans but I'm hoping the other two maps we haven't seen yet are from the first two games.

Costumes made sense in 2 because it was a theme park. And well, most boards aren't from 2 alone, so unless they made new costumes for each board, it wouldn't really make sense here. However, a Character costumes DLC or unlockable would be cool. Imagine everyone dressed as chefs or lumberjacks for the other 2 confirmed boards.

I think that Hudson Soft’s closure in 2012 had more to do with Mario Party being experimental than people realize. Hudson Soft was the developer of the first 8 Mario Party games (and the DS game), and since NDcube took over, they had since experimented with MP to see what would work (spoilers: Super Mario Party was the only one that worked). And there was no reason to change the formula because Hudson Soft was changing the way the boards worked in Mario Parties 6, 7, 8, and DS to make every board unique, which is a perfect way to change the way the game works without getting rid of the original formula of Mario Party. As much as I like the original boards, I hope there’s DLC to add some of the Gamecube boards, namely Castaway Bay or Faire Square from Mario Party 6, Pagoda Peak from Mario Party 7, Koopa’s Tycoon Town or the Sky Guy Express from 8. Those are some really good Mario Party boards. As for the minigames, as much as it is annoying that it’s lopsided in favor of classic minigames, I don’t mind that as long as all the minigames or most of them are good choices (and I know that comes down to preference), but some of the ones in Top 100 were baffling. Like, Mario Party 8 only had three minigames in that game, but most of them aren’t that good or have motion controls, so they put in Crank to Rank, a game that lasts four seconds tops and all you do is raise a flag. Riveting. That being said, I remember a lot of the minigames from 4 and 7 were really good and there were some fun ones from 6 as well, so we’ll see.

So looking into it, This isn't just a nostalgia bait either. Nintendo is LEGIT fixing these old boards to make them more accessible, fun, and bullshit! (In a good Mario Party kinda way ;) ). High value spaces behind key doors to make them more valuable to take, fixing gimmicks like Peach's B-day cake's Piranha Plants now having 2 sizes for less fortunate players to buy one, and putting a Bank, a boo, and a bowser space all next to each other to make a high risk and high reward path on Woody Woods, just to name the ones we know! This is the hypest I've been for Mario Party in ages. The only detriment to me is there are only 5 boards! I hope it gets DLC or free updates cuz it looks like they're actually TRYING with this one.

And when Kingdom Battle came out, I was interested, but didn’t end up getting it. It wouldn't be hard to recreate MPDS minigames that only use buttons like Camera Shy, All Geared Up or Whomp-a-thon. It could also be interesting to see one of the many side modes of MPDS like Rocket Rascals appearing in Mario Party Superstar.
