Fun fact: Punies were Shigeru Miyamoto idea, since after seeing how the battle audience could have over 100 characters on the screen, Mijamoto wanted every chapter to have hundrets of characters (100 X-nauts, 100+ Dull Bones attack, 200 punies vs 200 jabbies, Glits pit arena audience, 200 boos, attack of the Embers, Smorgs, plenty of bob-ombs and 200+ Dry Bones attack)

Interesting thing about Ratooeys are that they're actually related to Throphers from Super Mario RPG. The Japanese name for Ratooeys: Mokomoko, is derived from Thropher's Japanese name: Mukumuku. In the remake, Chapter 6's concept art even includes an early design of the Ratooey Businessman that depicts him as a Thropher.

My headcanons for some of the "unknown" races! Flurrie is a Ty-foo, the cloud creatures from later 3D games. She has similar lips, body build, and blows wind. Also, 3D World has a level called "Ty-Foo Flurries." Ishnail is a hybrid of a Koopa and a Bubblainian, the snail race from Mario Odyssey. Cortez is a Tostarenan, the Spanish macabre skulls from Odyssey. The green-headed bartenders are Beanish from Superstar Saga. Mr. Hoggles from Glitzville is from the same sapient pig race as Wizpig (Diddy Kong Racing) or Professor Chops (DK Returns).

Flurrie may actually be based on a Fwoosh from Super Mario 64, since both are cloud beings with strong blowing as well.

I love the Shaman, like Merluvlee, Merlon and Merlee across the games, they are so cool and offer great gameplay services to the player. Rowf and Rhuff are cool, Flowers like Petunia, Rosie and Lily have interesting personalities and the Star Kids like Twink are good as well and these are just examples of the first game.

Technically there's also Douplighosts for PM64 and TTYD But they are kinda easy to miss since there's only 1 friendly one in 64 and a bunch of enemy ones in crystal palace. in TTYD Doo_lis is literally the only one. The german localizer most likely called him Pinky because of Pinky and the Brain

According to the wiki, his Name is the demutive of his race, called ''Pinkepink''. So an explanation for both could be ,,Pinke'' (sometimes ,,Pinkepinke''), which is an old synonym for money.

I think it's worth mentioning the Whispering Woods trees from The Origami King. They're essentially the only notable new species in the game, and include a bunch of random trees, as well as Ol' Grandsappy (Sweet Sap Loggins) and the Sap Sisters.

10:43 I believe the Cragnons are also based on the original Apple Mac logo, which was a Picasso inspired, square face with the same color scheme as the Cragnons. I believe this is an inspiration for them because Super Paper Mario has several other digital media references, so it makes sense that would be one of them.

Small thing; Starlow is actually a Star SPRITE, not Spirit, which I guess is a different thing. It’s a very common mistake, though, because it’s stupid. I only realized this a couple weeks ago myself, despite playing Bowser’s Inside Story countless times throughout my life.

Tbf to the Cragnons, they don't really raise questions about humanity in that universe imo because they're from a different dimension than Mario and co. In fact it's hard to assume anything SPM original, even the Underwhere and Overthere (albeit they have the most going for them), are technically "part of" the Mario universe. It's kind of a multiverse story. Also counting the Shangri-spa Toads is a bit too generous imo. '^^

TTYD on Switch is just a remaster, not a remake. All Nintendo did was update the Gamecube code and pretty up game assets instead of R&D an entire game from scratch. TTYD Switch is copy/pasted assets right down to several character animations, environment geometry, game script, and even some glitches are identical. People have known this since the game released; it's not a secret.
