I would never trust an electric boat out on the river or ocean. These engineers haven't figured in on ocean swell, current, and wind in their calculations. I'll keep my twinn engine gas boat. @amateurwizard
@amateurwizard Жыл бұрын
Technically it produces hydrogen. In air that would catch fire. Worst case scenario If the battery sank it would dissipate it's stored energy because the salt water is conductive (but not hugely). If it sank then was punctured, it would create huge amounts of Hydrogen. However it would not lead to thermal runaway like it does above water. Instead just that battery cell would be damaged. The very cold & high thermal mass of the water helps this. Underwater, no oxygen no heat, no fire. There are other things to be worried about though.
@Neojhun
@Neojhun Жыл бұрын
There is very little lithium in Lithium ion batteries. The density is soo low it's near impossible for outside water to get to the lithium ion. FYI A 1000lbs EV battery has about 22lbs (10kg) of lithium losely spread through the pack. Soo the Water + Lithium problem is nearly impossible.

@andyjohnson3790 Жыл бұрын
A crap ton!! Mining is extremely energy intense and harmful to the environment. But as the same with EVs there is a beneficial trade off depending on how many miles traveled and the source of energy to charge the batteries. One gigantic difference with EVs and ICEs is that metals (batteries) are recyclable while it's IMPOSSIBLE to recycle fuel once it has been burned. Humans are going to harm the environment regardless, so the long term goal is to use machines, technology, and energy that can be recycled over and over again, and you cannot recycle fossil fuels.

Just had a brand new V8 powered Cobalt delivered. I will stick with gas thanks. No mention at all in this piece about how long it takes to charge the boat, and how many hours of run time you get and at what speeds? That is the key here. I can "charge" my gas boat in 15 mins with a full tank of gas, and run for 5-6 hours at full speed, and still have 2/3 tank left over. These electric boats can't come close to that, not even remotely. Also, the twin stainless props on my V8 Cobalt will easily beat that Arc boat out of the hole shot. Boats don't have a transmission, they are all, "instant torque." So how is that a selling point for an electric boat? I could sit here all day and poke holes in this electric boat. There are so many reasons not to buy one. Also, that quiet electric boat is quite loud, what nonsense are they spouting about it being quiet? Next time send a man who actually knows something about boats.

Simpler maintenance & drive trains (electric motor meet wheels, done) Our grids and steadily going to be more renewable, these allow for complex systems that maintain grid stability and efficient use of energy production from said renewable. Firstly, 40% energy transfer to the water with electric vs. just 8% with fossil fuels. So, the future of boating isn't in question. It is electric. Secondly, $300,000 for a 24' cruiser of this caliber isn't out of line with industry. Boats are luxury items, pure and simple. Thirdly, while ARC as a company and its products is certainly cool. They're not first movers. Others, such as Candela, have similarly impressive offerings...that also carry a luxury price tag. Lastly, moving from gas to electric is one thing. However, it makes much more sense to couple the power plant transition with new designs, such as hydrofoils. Smoother, even quieter and vastly more economical.

Pricey for a 24-footer. Of course prices will come down as electrical motors find their way into powering more boats. They have been making electric outboard motors (Torqeedo, Mercury) for a few years. It was simply a matter of time before they figured out how to incorporate Tesla/SpaceX technology into marine applications.

The Japanese navy Sōryū class & Taigei class Submarines both use Lithium Ion batteries. Because the Japanese have no clue how to build Electric Devices. Not like anyone would ever by electric devices from them. /s

All engines run on electricity. Submarines have run on electric motors underwater for well over the last century. Electric motors use a tiny fraction of the voltage needed to fire each cylinder. And they don't burn or blow up like gas boats routinely do! Don't fear it, learn and you will love the future.

Using only electricity to explode in a combustion chamber...do tell me more!...You do realize EV's don't use pistons they use electric motors, basically like you find on your homes blower motor. I've been working with and around electric motors since 1978 but I'm sure you know more......LMAO

Meanwhile Taigei class and Sōryū class SUBMARINEs use Lithium Ion Batteries. Because they Japanese have no clue how to build electric devices. Not like anyone would ever buy electric devices from them. Thus why anyone who even atttempts to use Electricity & Water are all dead. Electric Water Pumps, SUBMARINEs, Cruise Ships (ABB AziPod), Hot Water Boilers and Pressure Washers are all useless.
